How did paintball start?
Most people say the start of paintball was lumberjacks that used a single shot air gun, with a paintball to mark trees for cutting. Next thing you know, lumberjacks arehiding behind the trees shooting at each other, and paintball was born. Back then, paintball guns were single shot markers, and a paintball cost nearly a dollar each!James Hale of Daisy Manufacturing invented and patented the first paintball marker. It would originally be used to mark trees and cattle by farmers and ranchers. In 1981 the first paintball game was held between players (Bob Gurnsey - retailer,Hayes Noel - stockbroker, and Charles Gains - writer). Later more players would begin to play against each other, in a capture the flag format. (The winner captured allof the flags without firing a shot)In 1982 the first outdoor field was opened in Rochester NY. Additionally, PMI wasfounded to market and distribute paintball products. In 1983, the first outdoor paintball fields opened in Toronto Canada. In 1985 the first outdoor paintball fields opened in England. In 1992 the first professional paintball league (NPPL) was founded with events taking place all over the USA.In 2002, the format of XBALL was introduced, with the National XBALL League(NXL) being founded the year later.
What is paintball?
Paintball is primarily a team sport where opposing players use paintball guns to mark each other in their efforts to remain in the game and win. Since paintball guns willmark their opponent with a paintball mark, they are commonly referred to as markersin the industry. Paintball is played in dozens of countries worldwide, with millions of regular participants playing annually. There are multiple game formats ranging fromcapture the flag to elimination to anything else that can be created by the players'imaginations. Teams can have as little as a few players, to hundreds of players per side, depending on the type of game being played.
How do the games work?
How games work will depend largely on the types of games being played. In astandard setting, two teams of roughly equal size playing on opposite ends of thefield, with a flag being positioned between them. The goal is for one of the teams toretrieve the flag and hang it on the opposing base. Players who are hit by a paintballare eliminated, and have to head off of the field and wait for the next game to start.
Does it hurt to get hit with a paintball?
It can. If players are wearing a few layers of clothing (say two t-shirts or a t-shirt and
hoodie combo), the force of the impact will be greatly reduced. It is important to notethat all players must chronograph their paintball marker to ensure that it is firingwithin the safe limit of 300 FPS. Even if firing within this safe limit, it is stronglyrecommended that players wear layers so as not to leave any skin exposed, as a shotfrom within 20 feet can leave a mark if impacting on open skin. That being said, if you are wearing a few layers and are playing with fun in mind, it is more likely to gethurt running into a tree, or tripping and falling because you are too focused on theaction, and not on your surroundings!
Are there referees?
Referees exist in paintball, just as they do in football, hockey, and other sports.Referees strive to ensure safety at fields, and enforce the various rules of the game.
Who can play paintball?
Paintball can be played by anyone over the age of 18 without consent, and those whoare under 18 will require parental (or a guardians) written consent. There are no agelimits to play. Restrictions may exist for health reasons, so if you have any conditionsthat may impede play, you should consult your physician before starting play. What are the main types of paintball?Paintball can generally be divided into 2 types of play:Recreational/scenario/woodsball and Tournament/speedball. Generally, recreational play involves larger number of players, playing in dense foliage with specificobjectives in mind that may change from game to game. Tournaments usually involveteams of specific size (such as 3 man, 5 man, 7 man, etc.) that will compete againstother teams in a tournament format.
What is recreational paintball?
Recreational paintball gets its name from the atmosphere and type of players that areattending. In general, recreational paintball will take place over a large area, on fieldsmade up of largely natural objects, such as trees, wood forts, and anything else thatcan be easily built and placed into permanent position. Games can focus on scenariossuch as capture the flag, rescue the hostage, recon missions, acquisition of specificitems, eliminations, and so on.Scenario paintball tends to have markers in use that are more similar to real militaryguns. In this regard, some scenario games may attempt to reenact past militarymissions, such as D-Day at Normandy or the Battle of the Somme. However, not allscenario games are focused on recreating military situations. Other scenarios can havea science fiction twist, and really anything that comes into the organizers'imaginations.
