Discoveries: The Chemical Nature of DNA
1869—Fredrich Miescher named the chemical nucleicontained
nuclein
. Other chemists discovered it wasacidic and named it
nucleic acid
.It was soon realized thatthere were two types of nucleic acids: DNA andRNA.Early in the 20
th
century, 4types of nucleotides werediscovered.

Once Morgan showed that genes are locatedon chromosomes, proteins and DNA werethe candidates for the genetic material.Until the 1940s, the specificity of function of proteins seemed to indicate that they werethe genetic material. However, this was not consistent withexperiments with microorganisms, likebacteria and viruses.
