•Once Morgan showed that genes are locatedon chromosomes, proteins and DNA werethe candidates for the genetic material.•Until the 1940s, the specificity of function of proteins seemed to indicate that they werethe genetic material.•However, this was not consistent withexperiments with microorganisms, likebacteria and viruses.
