Life Begins With God
THE plan of this book grew out of my association with modern young men and women in thecollege classroom. In those impromptu open forums, which I cherish as some of the brightest moments of my teaching days, they discussed their outlook on life with a frankness and honesty which I have alwaysadmired. The youth of America are candid and sincere. They are anxious to find the basis Of truehappiness, the foundation for a noble, sterling character. On my desk is an editorial by a college youth from the newspaper of the University of Iowa. Theheadline reads: “Take Us Back to Solid Ground.” The writer affirms that young people have not beenshown how to live. Here are his words to the older generation:“You haven’t taught us to be able to take it. We aren’t living within our means, and we followedyour example. We are afraid of hard work; you never taught us to love it. We can’t accept responsibility;you couldn’t before us. We don’t know the meaning of discipline; you didn’t discipline us. We havenothing to which we can cling as the understood, almost tangible jewel of our American heritage. It isthere, but you understand it even less than we do.”This man of the campus then adds: “We want constant training in the constant things of life, the physical, mental, and spiritual things which have been the foundations of humanity since the civilizationsof ancient China.”Because it is my firm conviction that youth longs to find “solid ground”-the permanent values, theconstant things of life I have written my answer to young people of the twentieth century as I, a youth of this century, have confronted the problems and found the solution in my own experience.Unless otherwise stated all quotations from the Bible are taken from The Bible, An AmericanTranslation, edited by J.
