Description

Imagine you live in Papua New Guinea and are a member of a stone age,
animistic tribe. One from a nearby village preaches Christ to you, and you
turn from your trust in ancestral, spirit deities and believe on Jesus Christ for
eternal salvation. You will desire to know and follow the teaching of the
Bible and you will teach your children what you are learning. You will so
value your new faith that you will do all you can to instruct your children to
love and fear God. This is not unlike what Moses is doing by giving a
farewell speech to the sons of Israel as they prepare to enter the Promised
Land under Joshua’s leadership. The nation of Israel’s father, Abraham, had
a pagan background but was led by Yahweh to enter into a covenant of
grace. Moses is reminding Israel of their covenantal responsibilities as they
enter the land of Canaan.
