hauling us to Terminal Three que nos arrastra hasta la Terminal Tres
a little girl una niña muy pequeña
clings to her mother’s knees. se aferra a las rodillas de su mamá.
Facing the door Su madre está de pie,
her mother stands mirando por la ventana,
looking out through the window, de cara a la puerta,
about to start a punto de comenzar
this endless mess este lío sin final
of becoming a foreigner. de convertirse en extranjera.

On the rare occasions
we gather
together
as the clock strikes ten
we remove our shoes
dance in our stocking
feet
chanting to soft, hushed music
or huddle round a table
murmuring jokes:
unruly football fans
sneaking passes
of laughter
past our neighbours.

cuando el reloj

al son de una grabadora amortiguada
o nos apiñamos
en torno a la mesa
a cuchichearnos
los últimos chistes:
fogosos
hinchas de fútbol
contrabandeamos pases de risa
entre los vecinos.

this bit of dust este poco de polvo

exiled from greenness. exiliado del verde.

FRONTWARDS HACIA ADELANTE

A man cycles down the lane, Un hombre baja el sendero en bicicleta

a little boy con un niño
lodged between his body acomodado entre su cuerpo
and the steering bar. y el manubrio.

Leaning forward slightly Suavemente inclinado

the man cradles his son hacia delante
ever so gently el hombre acuna a su hijo
con sumo cuidado

while the little boy, mientras el niño

unwittingly sin percatarse de ello
turns his back on love. da su espalda al amor.

It will be years, decades most probably, Pasarán años, décadas probablemente

before it is his turn Antes de que llegue su turno
to hold love ever so gently de acunar al amor

launched one more time retornada de nuevo
into life’s swirl. al torbellino de la vida.

Love flies its gulls El amor vuela sus gaviotas

above our unspent joys, por encima de nuestra dicha sin gastar,
which bristle,
sigh, dicha que se eriza,
and then recede suspira
once again y se repliega
Into silence. de nuevo
en el silencio.
