3 Ways To Decorate Pie Crusts

Once you mastered the basic method for crimping a pie crust, you can start to experiment with more decorative edges.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m564b9cce.jpg

In this recipe, I’ll show you how to make three fancy edges for your pies.

One that looks like a braided rope, one with wide scallops, and one that looks like a shaft of wheat, which is especially nice for thanksgiving.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m5ee072d3.jpgtmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_6aacdd68.jpgtmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m3a718e43.jpg

Any of these edges can be made in less than 5 minutes and none require any special equipment beyond a pair of kitchen shears.

To start, I’ve already lined my pie plates with dough and I’ve rolled the excess dough underneath itself to create a nice high edge.

So, we will start off with the scalloped edge, which is actually pretty similar to the regular crimped edge, but we are just going to make wider crimps.

So, to do this, I form a curve with my index finger on the inside of the pie and then press into the crust using your thumb and forefinger on the outside hand to create a nice scalloped edge.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_dd1a3af.jpg

You are just going to repeat this all around the pie. You want to make sure you don’t push too hard. You don’t want the dough to go over the edge of the pie plate; it should rest directly on the rim.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m4a27307a.jpg

That’s all there is to it.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_7da30c95.jpg

Another way to dress up your pie crust is with the rim that looks like twisted rope. It’s really easy to do.

I’m going to use the side of my thumb and just press down into the dough at a 45 degree angle and then I want to use the finger of my outside hand to make sure the dough doesn’t extend out over the side of the rim.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_22684438.jpg

You will repeat this every half inch to ¾ of an inch.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_2f5e8875.jpg

You can also use the flat side of a knife to do this. But either way you want to make sure you don’t press too hard otherwise you could sever the dough.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m2d0d8ff4.jpg

After the edge is done, I like to go around and just press down on the side of the pie tin to make sure there are no bubbles.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_6fc512a9.jpg

At this point, it looks good and ready to go.

Now, the wheat crust, which looks really complicated, but it’s actually really easy. You’re going to need a pair of kitchen scissors for this one and you’re just going to snip the edge at a 45 degree angle and repeat this to every ½ to ¾ of an inch all around the pie.

    tmp_268262a8535c1e9a80f52f375b2ae257_YOBY8n_html_m6ea34c9e.jpg

Now, I’m going to use my fingertips to pull apart each segment in opposite directions so they flare apart from one another, and then pinch the edge of each segment to a point so it’s more or less almond shaped.
