Published by Intellect Books
Published from January 2009 as a bi-monthly, full colour magazine, The Big Picture celebrates all that is special about film. Using minimal text, the magazine pushes imagery to the fore to create a visual narrative in which to revisit and rediscover film. The new magazine goes beyond the borders of the screen, revealing cinema's unique power to entertain, inspire and connect to each and every one of us. It features both film specific and film related content such as where and how we watch films, artists and photographers inspired by the medium and the ways that film spills over into our everyday lives.

ew ‘cult classics’are genuinelyworthy o thetitle, but
The BigLebowski
ullsevery cultish criteria. In‘The Dude’ it has a modernmessiah; in ‘Walter Sobchak’a crazy and charismaticprophet; and, in ‘LebowskiFest’, a spectacular revivalistroadshow. Lebowski Fest wasconceived by KentuckiansScott Schut and WillRussell ater a suitablyinactive aternoon tradingLebowski-isms whilst ailingto sell T-shirts at a tattooconvention. Soon ater, theyhired a bowling alley andprepared or what theyexpected to be a one-o gathering o a handul o thelm’s ans.Seven years later, the estivalis a phenomenon. Touring themajor cities o America, itattracts masses o Lebowski-devotees – AKA ‘Achievers’ –who congregate in costume ‘todrink white Russians, throwsome rocks and party with anarray o Dudes, Walters andMaudes’. (But not, we hope, urinate on each other’s rugsor chop o each other’s toes.)Film and real lie have seldombecome as entangled as theyare here. In 2002,
Lebowski
stepped o the cinema screenand into the real world at therst Lebowski Fest – and, in2009, Lebowski Fest steppedout o the real world and ontothe cinema screen in EddieChung’s documentary
The Achievers: The Story o theLebowski Fans
.The estival thrives on itsunderground atmosphere but– as more and more cinephilescotton onto the brillianceo
The Big Lebowski
and asmainstream moviegoers be-come increasingly accustomedto the Coens’ unique output– that atmosphere may beendangered. I can’t imagineanyone is worried, though.Ater all, the Dude abides.
