MEL-8704 EMF/Temperature Sensor
In last week’s Gizmos and Gadgets, I was going on aboutthe trials and tribulations of having too much equipment.Bearing this in mind, I’m a huge advocate of combining tech-nology where applicable and appropriate. Mel Meters hasdone this in glorious fashion starting with their MEL-8704 EMFdetector. This particular model has been around for a while,I’ve owned mine for over a year, and recent visits to theirwebsite have shown advances in the current model as well asmodifications to other popular EMF detectors, however, Ikeep running into people who have yet to hear of them. So, you’re asking yourself, what makes this EMF detector stand out fromany other? Here is where the developers have taken a hard look at the popu-lar paranormal equipment and sat down to determine what could be donebetter. The 8704, boasts such features as being the only EMF meter on themarket to measure both ELF (extremely low frequency) down to 30 Hz
and
variances in temperature with a built in digital ambient thermometer. Thisallows the investigator the luxury of correlating high EMF readings with “coldspots” at a glance with no fumbling to grab the right piece of kit for the job.Other features include, but are not limited to, an easy to read backlit dis-play that can double as a light in darker environments; LED flash light on topof the unit next to the temperature probe; tripod mounting screw and built intable top stand for hands free use; a record mode that can be used to capturehigh/low measurements for later review; and, an EMF “burst mode” whichallocates 100 per cent of the units micro processor speed to monitor dynamicEMF changes.A lot of thought has gone into the planning and development of these me-ters, which are only available online from the manufacturer and a few othertrusted paranormal e-stores, however, there is one thing that I would like tosee on future models. The ability to data log and dump the information to alaptop or other computer. Although there is a recording feature for compari-son of values, it is intended for short term use only, and provides the userwith no way of logging this information so one must rely on a video log of thedisplay for tangible proof of readings.I feel I must state that I am in no way affiliated with the developers of theMel Meters, and I in no way benefit from any reviews, positive or negative. There is tons of equipment on the market for sale to paranormal investiga-tors, some of it being absolute crap and not worth the shipping fees. Withthis piece of equipment, I’ve tested it, used it, dropped it and generally putit through its paces to my satisfaction as being worth the investment. Foradditional information on this and other products available from the develop-er, visit their website at:http://www.melmeter.com/

After last week’s newsletter wasdistributed, a forum poll was postedas to which format was preferred. Asa result of the votes received, we willcontinue to publish in PDF format. This is still a trial process and if youprefer another format or missed thepoll completely, I would urge you tocheck the “General” forum and sub-mit your vote accordingly. I will berunning the poll until 27 Sep 09, forthose who still wish to participate.Response to the new look hasbeen outstanding, for that I thank youall. It’s still a work in progress andwill continue to grow and change un-til Doug and I are both happy with thefinal results. In my opinion you cannever have too much information aslong as it is factual and relevant. With that said I would again like toextend the invitation to our entirereadership to submit material thatthey would like to share outside theforums and articles section. As muchas I enjoy research and writing, Idon’t want to overpopulate the new-sletter with my ramblings solely. Thispublication is for the readership and Istrongly encourage you all to partici-pate, no matter what your writingskills.I will continue to reiterate thatcommunities such as this cannot sur-vive without the membership andtheir inclusion into all aspects of saidcommunity. Everyone here, at Para-Nexus, should see themselves as ateacher as well as a student, for thelearning never stops and there is somuch that everyone can contribute tomaking this one of the foremost re-sources for the paranormal on theinternet.Questions, comments or sugges-tions pertaining to this newsletter oranything posted herein, may be sentto ddesjardins@paranexus.org.

ParaNexus—Past, Present, and Future
ByDougKelley CH, CSL, CLPIParaNexus Executive Director
Hello ParaNexus Members and Guests!
It’s been over 18 months since Jari Mikkola and I founded ParaNexus and we have come a long way as an organizationsince then. In January 2009, Jari assumed responsibility for publishing the
Journal of Anomalous Sciences
as its own entityand organization apart from ParaNexus, and I have take responsibility for the reset of ParaNexus. Jari has simply done an out-standing and awesome job on producing the Journal—I’ve never seen any other magazine with the quality that Jari is produc-ing. And little does the public realize just how many hours it takes to produce one issue—it can take well over a hundred! As anyone who has started a group will tell you, it is a real challenge to build an organization; it takes time and the dili-gent ongoing effort of many. It has been an even greater challenge to build ParaNexus into a top-notch anomalous researchassociation because, frankly, our philosophy and approach is different than most of the paranormal community. Rather thanchasing lights in the sky, presenting dust orbs as ghosts, or promoting superstitious fear with “demons” and “demonology,”we seek to delve deeper into finding the causes and commonalities among various types of anomalous phenomena and, moreimportantly, what these anomalous events mean to our existence and the human condition. As a result of this approach, weappeal more to the educated and serious segment of the anomalous research community rather than the hobbyist and ama-teur segment which makes up the largest part—especially in recent years. These factors combined with the poor economyhave made getting members and donations harder than ever. Even still, we press on.ParaNexus is now ready to take the next step in its organization evolution. We are incorporating the association as a Flor-ida Not for Profit Corporation in the next few days. We will also file for 501(c)(3) tax exempt status with the IRS just as soonas we can afford the $300 filing fee, which should be in the next few months. Paid memberships remain ParaNexus’ primarymeans of raising funds to cover operating costs. All staff members are non-paid volunteers and generously give of their timein furthering the ParaNexus Vision. While our operating expenses are currently low, we will need to raise funds if we are evergoing to fulfill our mission, just like any other non-profit organization.Even though ParaNexus has operated just like a non-profit since its inception, becoming an official non-profit organizationwill potentially qualify us for government and private grants. Additionally, those who donate money and tangible items willbe able to deduct these donations from their taxes. We also want to be in a financial position to award research grants toother groups with special projects. But more importantly, operating as a non-profit will hopefully demonstrate that ParaNex-us Administrators are committed to becoming a World-Class organization and premiere participant in the next generation ofanomalous research with members who comprise the crème de la crème of the research community. We sincerely appreciate the support that our present and past members have shown and look forward to a bright futurewhere we can make some serious inroads in finding answers to anomalous phenomena! We hope you will join us!
