BOWL ROLL:
Texas played ina bowl game for aUT-record 11thstraight season in2008, bettering theprevious mark of nine-straight from1977-85. The Hornshave won seven of their last eight bowls and have an 8-3record under Mack Brown. In the 11 yearsprior to Brown’s arrival, Texas went tofive bowls and was 2-3. Brown is the firstUT coach since Darrell Royal, who was8-7-1 in bowl games, to post a .500 or bet-ter record. With a 24-21 victory over No.10 Ohio State in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl,Texas has won bowl games in five consec-utive years for the first time in school his-tory (2004-08).
They are one of only twoschools nationally to accomplish that feat.
The Horns did win five straight previously(1963-64, ’66, ’68-69), but the streak wasinterrupted by seasons that did not result ina bowl.
Brown’s personal string, includingtime at North Carolina, goes back evenfurther. He has directed his teams to 17straight bowls, which is the second-longestactive streak in the nation.
NO. 2 ALL-TIME:
In 2008, Texas movedahead of Notre Dame for second place onthe NCAA all-time victory list. At 833victories, Texas trails only Michigan inall-time wins. With the Longhorns in sec-ond place on that list, it marks the firsttime since 1932 that Michigan and NotreDame do not occupy the one-two spots inall-time wins. Since Mack Brown arrivedin 1998, Texas has posted a 116-26 recordand moved ahead of Alabama, Notre Dameand Nebraska on the all-time victory chart.
TWELFTH YEAR UNDER MACKBROWN:
With Mack Brown in his12th season at Texas, he is just the fourthcoach in the 116 years of Texas football tocoach the Longhorns for at least a decadeand just the second UT coach to win 100games while at Texas. Darrell Royal, whowon 167 games, has the longest tenure at20 years, while D.X. Bible and Fred Akerseach coached in Austin for 10 seasons.Brown is the first coach in UT history topost 200 victories during a career. With a116-26 (.817) record at UT, Brown is thearchitect of the nation’s best record duringthat stretch. In addition, Brown has ledthe Horns to an 89-15 (.856) mark overthe last nine seasons, which is the nation’ssecond-best record over that timespan, andincludes five 11-win seasons (2001, ’02,’04, ’05 and ’08). The 11-win seasons arethird-best to UT’s 13-win campaign in2005 and its 12-win season in ’08. Texasis the only school in the nation that hasposted at least 10 wins in each of the lasteight seasons (a UT record). Brown isthe lone coach nationally to lead his teamto nine or more victories in 13 straightseasons. His 11 straight seasons at UT of nine or more victories are a school best.Under Brown, the Horns have posted Top10 finishes six times in the last eight years(2001, ’02, ’04, ’05, ’07 and ’08). Priorto his arrival, the last time UT finished inthe Top 10 was 1983. In addition, Texasplayed in a bowl game for a school-record11th-consecutive season, bettering the pre-vious streak of nine straight from 1977-85.Brown’s personal strings, including timeat North Carolina, go back even further. He has posted 19 consecutive winning sea-sons and taken his teams to 17 consecutivebowl games.
