The short story was outstanding, even though it seems as if it peters out in terms of energy and of the writer's commitment to it. The "Gallon" article is interesting thought perhaps too lengthy, considering there is little denouement, no climax to either the ritual or the article. The last two pieces were disappointingly pedestrian and even shallow; the writer are hardly going after new territory. Like any virgin, a certain amount of bumbling is expected. But is innocent vacillation all that charming?
