This section summarizes the contents and explains the organization of the
 Elec-trical Manual
. This manual is divided into two volumes. Volume 1 contains theengineering guidelines with accompanying appendices. Volume 2 contains specifi-cations, industry codes and standards, and engineering drawings and forms. PCdisks with EG specifications are included at the end of Volume 2. Both volumeshave a table of contents and a complete index to aid you in finding specific subjects.

Scope and Application
 Electrical Manual
provides engineering guidelines and specificationspertaining to electrical engineering. These guidelines include design and calculationprocedures, sample calculations, standard engineering practices, and data fordesigning electrical power systems, and guidance for applications of electricalcomponents. The guidelines also contain background information and references. The model specifications include comments that explain their provisions and clarifyinterpretations based on Company experience. This manual is written for entry-level engineers and nonspecialists regardless of experience. This manual should not be used as a substitute for sound engineering judgment, nor should it take precedence over the judgment of the experiencedspecialist in electrical engineering. The intent of this manual is to provide practical, useful information based onCompany experience and established practices. Therefore, forms are provided in thefront of the manual for your convenience in suggesting changes. Your knowledgeand experience are important for improving subsequent printings and keeping thismanual up to date.
The colored tabs in the manual will help you find information quickly.
tabs are for table of contents, introduction, appendices, PC disks, index, and general purpose topics.
tabs denote engineering guidelines.
tabs are for model specifications, industry standards, and standard draw-ings.
tab marks a place to keep documents developed at your facility.
Engineering Guidelines
 Electrical Manual
covers a range of topics relating to electrical systems andequipment: system design; system studies and protection; hazardous (classified)areas; motor control centers; switchgear, protective devices, switches, and trans-formers; grounding systems; installation of electrical facilities; wire and cable andlighting; auxiliary power systems; and electrical checkout, commissioning, andmaintenance. A summary of each section of the manual with pertinent specifica-tions is given below.
This section contains guidelines for the design of an electrical distribution system,to be used when designing a new distribution system or making significant addi-tions to an existing system. The section gives an overview of the electrical design

process, from project inception through detailed final design, including: designconcepts and practices; load summary, power source, and auxiliary power systems;bus arrangement, system voltages, and one-line diagram; system studies, equipmentsizing, and enclosure selection; feeder and branch circuit systems; and grounding, lighting, and system protection. Other sections of the manual are cited for details forspecifying equipment. A flow chart illustrates the sequence of design activitiesrequired for designing an electrical distribution system and directs the reader toother pertinent sections of the manual. Also included are a list of references, an appendix for sizing automatic transferswitches (
AppendixA), a technical paper, “Features of a Power System Incorpo-rating Large AC Motors/Captive Transformers”(AppendixB), Model SpecificationELC-MS-1675, Installation of Electrical Facilities, and data sheet and data guide forELC-DS-597, Instructions for 480 V Motor Control Rack Specification andArrangement.
This section gives an introduction to electrical power system studies for the designof new systems or the modification of existing systems. These studies, which serveas a framework for analyzing critical factors in power system design, include: ashort-circuit study, a motor-starting study, and a load flow analysis. Also included isa brief discussion of studies for transient stability and harmonic analysis. A list of references is provided along with a technical paper for performing a short-circuitstudy (AppendixC).
This section discusses the classification of locations for electrical installations. Itgives guidance for the selection of electrical equipment for hazardous (classified)areas. Topics discussed include: definitions of hazardous (classified) areas;maximum operating temperature and equipment enclosures; hermetically sealeddevices and intrinsically safe systems; and nonincendive equipment and purgedenclosures. A list of references is included along with the engineering form ELC-EF-652, Conduit Stub-up Arrangement.
This section provides information for selecting 600 volt, 2400 volt, and 5 kV motorcontrol centers (MCCs). It discusses the relationship of motors and starters, controlmethods, ratings, enclosures, selection, and customizing. Also included is a discus-sion of motor protection, overvoltages, and surge arrestors, and descriptions of NEMA ratings. The section refers to Company model specifications, data sheets and data guides, and engineering forms that relate to motor control centers and starters. Model speci-fications included in this manual with data sheets and data guides are: ELC-MS-3977, Medium Voltage Current-limiting Fused Motor Starters, and ELC-MS-4371,
