In a couple of weeks I have a glut of anniversaries coming my way. Over a three-dayperiod I will, by turn, be celebrating and commemorating three significant events inmy life.Perhaps the closest to home of the three anniversaries is that of my own birthday.I shall be another year older and possibly – due to more interest rate rises – deeper indebt, as the saying goes. But I’m not a maudlin person when it comes to the subjectof getting older. Sure, there are the cons of more grey hairs, more responsibility andless free time but there are also the pros of never having to eat food I don’t like andnot having to phone home to stay late at a friend’s house. In short, I am master of myown destiny (interest rates not withstanding).Just three days before my birthday I will be remembering my Grandma, who diedthree years ago, aged 94. I miss spending time with her, listening to her stories andenjoying the vigorous hugs she used to give. On the one hand, taking a few momentsto remember Grandma’s death is a sad thing, but on the other hand I have lots ofhappy memories of times we spent together. On the same day that Grandma died, a close friend gave birth to twin girls. So,as days of anniversaries go, it’s a pretty strange one – celebrating the life of onewho has passed away and the new lives, filled with possibilities, of two bouncing, energetic children, with so much yet to live for. This particular day, more so even than my own birthday, is a day of reflection forme. While, as mentioned earlier, I am now an adult in charge of my own destiny, suchdays that mark the boundaries of life and death cause this adult to question, ‘Whatdestiny?’ I may be in charge but where exactly am I headed? If you’re in the mood for a bit of personal reflection about life’s meaning thencheck out Ed’s article on p.40 and also Karen’s on p.43.Hope you enjoy the contents of this issue!

They couldn'tbut put her in touch with thecompany Romec, who manu-facture and supply postboxes for the Royal Mail.Company boss Paul Carrwas so touched by Gareth’sstory, he sent a weightedfibreglass box and postman'shat to Gareth for free. A new shoe has been invented thatvacuums as you walk. The Shoover – which makers Electroluxcall the Dustmate – has a tiny recharge-able vacuum inside the base. The shoes are made of green nylon witha flexible rubber sole and elastic sock to fitany foot, making it comfortable to wear. According to the
Mirror
a spokesmanfor Electrolux said: ‘We all have to vacuumour home – this product is designed forbusy people who want to keep the house-work down to a minimum. Dustmate pro-vides a cleaning solution that doesn't takeup any precious free time.‘As you walk, the base of the shoescollects dust from the floor withoutrequiring any effort. It is a simple yetcreative cleaning concept.’The designers came up with the inven-tion after talking to consumers and findingthat they were just too busy to spend lotsof time doing housework.Research found that only 28 per centHoover daily – down six per cent in the lasttwo years. A US man who gave his Saab car to amuseum after notching up one millionmiles has been given a free replacement.Saab didn't give anything at first to sales-man Peter Gilbert after he gave his 1989Saab 900 to the Wisconsin AutomotiveMuseum. But the Swedish car giant has now hada change of heart and decided to give hima new Saab 9-5 Aero.‘I am on cloud nine right now. This isexactly the car I wanted,’ Mr Gilbert said.Saab verified the high mileage on MrGilbert's car last summer. He had hopedthey would give him a new car then, buthe didn't get so much as a T-shirt.That all changed after Mr Gilbert's storywas carried by newspapers and othermedia around the world. The company has now decided not onlyto give Mr Gilbert a new car but to extendthe offer to anyone who puts a millionmiles on their originally owned Saab.‘We have no idea, frankly, how manycars that will be. At this point, we onlyknow of Peter's car,’ said Saab spokesmanJan-Willem Vester.Black tape is being stuck on civil servants' desks toshow them where to put their keyboard and pens – at acost of £7million.Union officials criticised the efficiency drive as ‘mad-ness’ and added: ‘It's demoralising and demeaning.’Workers at the National Insurance offices inLongbenton, North Tyneside, were picked for the pilotproject. The Public and Commercial Services Union's KevinMcHugh said: ‘This office has been open for 60 yearsand people have managed to find their pens and sta-plers without consultants helping them in that time. The black-tape project is part of the nationwide Leanprogramme, run by consultants Unipart, which hasalready required staff to move their personal belongingsoff desks. The PCSU said: ‘We had a situation in Scotlandwhere staff were asked, “Is that banana on your deskactive or inactive?” meaning were they going to eat it? Ifnot, it had to be cleared away. It's madness.’But a HM Revenue and Customs spokesman said:‘Lean is all about how we can work more efficiently todeliver an even better service to customers.’
A reporter interviewing a 104-year-old woman: ‘And what do you think is thebest thing about being 104?’ the reporter asked. She simply replied, ‘No peer pressure.’
