The Third Biennale of Church Arts Veliko Tarnovo 2013

The Biennale of Church Arts is a well-established international forum, the
only one of its kind in this field in Bulgaria. Set up by the staff of the Department
of Church Arts at the Orthodox Theological Faculty of Saints Cyril and Methodius
University of Veliko Tarnovo, it naturally fits into the cultural and historical context
of the town of Veliko Tarnovo. The motto of the Third Biennale was Church Arts in
the Spiritual Culture of Contemporary Europe.
The Third Biennale of Church Arts Veliko Tarnovo 2013 was one out of the
fifty events celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the University of Veliko Tarnovo.
It is held in support of the proposal of the town of Veliko Tarnovo for the title of
European Capital of Culture. The exhibition venue was provided by Veliko Tarnovo
Municipality. Co-organizing the event were the Ministry of Culture, the Holy Metropolitanate of Veliko Tarnovo, Veliko Tarnovo Municipality, the Union of Bulgarian
Artists (UBA), the UBA local branch Veliko Tarnovo, and Pokrov Bogorodichen
Foundation Sofia. The Biennale provides a forum for contemporary creative work
in the field of Orthodox church arts: iconography, wall painting, woodcarving, mosaic etc, employed in church decoration and related to liturgical practice.
The artists from Bulgaria, Romania, Russia and Serbia featured in the third biennale did not only exhibit the results of their recent work, but also expressed their
desire to establish a standing forum for the discussion of current trends in the field
of church arts in the contemporary Orthodox Christian world. The issues discussed
in the session on the day following the opening of the exhibition focused on the
implementation of large-scale projects for decorating church spaces. Prof. Ancho
Kaloyanov raised the problem of the iconographic representation of those saints
whose iconographic types have not yet been fully developed and whose depiction

is a challenging and demanding task for the contemporary iconographer. This

problem was further considered by Svetoslav Stefanov, a Church Arts graduate of
the Orthodox Theological Faculty at the University of Veliko Tarnovo, who presented
his research on compiling a vita icon (with scenes from the saints life) of St. John
the Exarch of Bulgaria.
Dialogues among colleagues were the presentations and demonstrations
following the opening of the exhibition. Anna Goubkova of the Sophia Iconographic School in Moscow revealed the secrets of the technique for working with
gold powder, which is typical of Russian iconography and has particularly been
common since the 17th century. Having briefly introduced the history of miniature
woodcarving, Kiril Tomanov presented his approach to executing works of this
particular art form. Simeon Zahariev demonstarted designing and execution of
contemporary two-layer carving of a church iconostasis.
As part of the Third Biennale of Church Arts, two books were presented: The
second generation of icon painters of the Samokov school of painting: Dimiter
Hristov Zograph, Ioan Nikolov the Icon-Painter, Kostadin Petrovitch Valyov by Elena
Genova, and Icon Painters from Tryavna by Lyuba Tsaneva.
Being of major significance for artists creative work, modern studies in the
field of the history and development of church arts bear witness of the tradition,
and the biennale exhibition convincingly demonstrated that this tradition is living.
