Let Me Tell You about Jim
Good teachers follow a simple principle:
teach,revise, test.
A good teacher will also be aware of the way a pupil learns: some need only a book, others practical stimulus and others thechance to ask questions. There are manybright and talented people around who, because they didn’tfit the educational mould, have been left feeling that theyare stupid - rubbish! In the right environment we can alllearn, be proud of our achievement and flourish.Last year, whilst walking in Spain, Rody and I met a Scotnamed Jim. From farm work he went into the whisky indus-try, doing menial tasks, and ended up as the productionmanager of the company. He went on to learn fluent Frenchand Spanish enabling him to become very successful in pro-moting sales in these countries. He was an amazing man andyet self effacing because of his humble origins. Then he dis-covered what I did for a living:
A vicar! Noooo, I don’t believe it, you’re too normal”,
which I took as a compliment. Thencame the questions…
I’ve always wanted the opportunity to ask these questions”
said Jim. I felt very inadequate but did mybest to address his objections and curiosities and at the endof our five day walk he thanked me for letting him chat say-ing that it had helped him to sort out a lot of things in hismind.Sometimes all it takes is the right opportunity to ask thosedifficult questions. Last autumn Dr. Karen Blakeley, a mem-ber of St Leonard’s and a Sherfield resident, decided she hadlots of questions about Christianity and Science so she set upa series of talks on science and faith — 400 people attended. As a follow up Karen plans to set up some evenings locally,in the Four Horseshoes pub, for you to come along and askthose difficult questions about God stuff, informally, over adrink. More details on page 33. I’m a bit worried that Karen’sgoing to put me in the ‘hot seat’! This is a really exciting op-portunity that
may help people begin to find answersto those difficult questions, so why not give it a goand come along?
Christian greetings,
