The once God-centered, Christ-exalting, Scripture-saturated church and
community in New England gave way long ago to formalism, traditionalism,
secularism. Why? I have not the space here to develop this but I will briefly
say that God-centered preaching gave way to man-centered preaching which
gave way to Unitarianism, Transcendentalism (man, not God is
transcendent), Liberalism, Modernism and Post-modernism. We in the
northeast, and increasingly this is so throughout our nation, remind me
somewhat of Israel in Egyptian bondage. No doubt the Hebrews in bondage
for 430 years lived with what one may call a spiritual inferiority complex.
They settled into their meaningless existence, not really expecting anything
to change. They were born slaves and they would die slaves, but God raised
up Moses to be their human deliverer. In Exodus 3:16-22 Yahweh gives
Moses and the Elders of Israel a vision for deliverance. They are to go to
Pharaoh and say that Yahweh wants him to let His people travel three days
into the wilderness in order to worship Him. Yahweh tells Moses that
Pharaoh will not honor the request, thus enabling Moses to see that this is no
easy task, that Pharaoh will resist him every inch of the way.
