Cloth Book Cover for A Fine Romance by Susan Branch Here are instructions for how to make a simple,

padded cloth book cover for Susan Branchs book. I made this to keep my copy of one of my most favorite books in as pristine a condition as possible, even though it has a jacket. The cloth cover keeps the jacket from getting torn and full of fingerprints or other soil. It is a plain cover, with padding in between the outer cover and lining, but you could embellish it any way you like.

Cloth Book Cover for A Fine Romance by Susan Branch

This project is really simple. You will need the usual tools and supplies to make this book cover: sewing machine, scissors or rotary cutter, thread, measuring tool- an acrylic ruler is best. Materials: Outer Cover: Lining: Same size as outer cover: Batting: One piece:

23 inches by 9 3/4 inches* 23 inches by 9 3/4 inches* 14 inches by 9 inches

*NOTE: This is just over 1/4 yard- {a long quarter: 42" by 9" is not enough.} If purchasing yardage, youll need 1/3 yard of each outer covering and lining. However, you are likely to have two pieces of fabric of the needed size in your stash if you are a quilter or sewer. Also: You likely have leftover batting from a quilting project. You could also use a piece of flannel as a substitute for batting. Definitions: Wide = side to side Long = top to bottom RST = right sides together WST = wrong sides together 23 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches long 23 inches wide by 9 3/4 inches long 14 inches wide by 9 inches long

Cut One Outer Cover: Cut One Lining: Cut One Batting piece:

Construction: 1. Layer these together in the following order: Outer Cover and Lining are placed RST, with the Outer Cover on the bottom. Find the center of these two pieces, and place the Batting in the center, on top of the lining.

Layering

2. Pin all layers together, and leave an opening at a lower edge of the rectangle that will become part of the foldover to the inside of the book cover. You will need to leave this open to turn all pieces Right side out after sewing. 3. Starting at one of the marks at your opening, and using a inch seam allowance, sew all along the outer edge of the rectangle, stopping at the 2nd mark for your opening for turning. Trim corners off. 4. Turn the piece inside out through the opening, pushing out along the seam line to get the best shape, and using a blunt rounded tool to gently push out the corners. Turn the opening seam allowance to the inside of the rectangle, and press the entire piece.

Pushed out corners

5. Find the center of the rectangle, and mark inch to either side of that mark. This makes a 1 inch space, which is where the binding will lay when the cover is on the book. Sew a stitching line along both these marks from top to bottom.

6. With lining side up, fold over 4 inches of the short ends towards the middle. Measure to make sure it is exactly 4 inches, and pin.

7. Sew through all layers at the top and bottom of this 4 inch foldovers, with a very small seam allowance- approximately 1/8 inch.

8. Insert the book cover into the pockets formed by the 4 inch foldovers. Youre done!
