Description
Pain, whether it be physical, emotional, or spiritual, can be an all consuming
affliction. How shall we address it? Emotional pain- often evidenced by
anger, depression, fear, or anxiety- usually can be traced to some earlier life
experience. Physical pain is more obvious to us and may be chronic (a
prolonged pain from an automobile accident, for example) or recent and
passing (a temporary pain connected with surgery). Spiritual pain, however,
can also be a reality. Sarah Edwards lost her 18 year old daughter, Jerusha,
and then, in rapid succession, her son-in-law Aaron Burr, Sr., her husband
Jonathan, and her daughter Esther Edwards Burr 16 days after Jonathan died.
Finally Sarah died of dysentery 7 months after her husband Jonathan had
passed. Talk about spiritual pain!
