COMPUTERIZATION OF SERVICES PROVIDED BY UNIVERSITY. PROBLEMS AND ACHIEVEMENTS. TUKE EXPERIENCE.

Jan Geni Technical University of Koice Slovakia

Agenda
A few words about deep history od processing of data Academic (pedagogical) information system (AIS) Economic IS

State of the art (IS) at Technical University of Kosice

(TUKE) ICT and core university business What next in the area of ICT@UNI

Where we started
80s? (not so much info) Forms for collecting of grades Retyping of grades Some statistics Advent of PCs and MS-DOS/Dbase Some local agenda (applications) Done at Computer center

2nd half of 90s

Some attempts to build SQL applications 1st application support for study offices Moderate development of web interface Services for teachers and students

Application evolved to quite complex system

Economics
Main reason to implement economic IS - Started with payroll system Later - accounting system (result of ISTOFIM)

Implementation of another one payroll system

Implementation of centrally operated IS - SAP

Lessons and some considerations

What is motivation to implement IS at UNI? Who should develop/implement/operate IS? Should we develop IS in-house or buy it?

Motivation
At commercial sector To save expenses To gain some advantages against competitors

At UNI ??? There are no such motivation factors as we can see at commercial sector
Exception we saw - Manfred Effingers accoounting book (ISTOFIM)

Just to show ourselves to have it (?)

Professional motivation of IT related managers

Where to get it (IS, of course)?

in-house development or purchase (both have plusses

and minuses) Just try to answer to following questions (my personal view):
What is core business of university?

Do we have (are able) to organize team(s) to

develop/implement/operate IS? Do our university follow same scheme in another areas (automobiles, machinery, building industry, )? Are we able (willing) to support development team (equipment, development tools, salaries, ) what will happen if not? Do you have required professionals (analytic team, )

How computerization can evolve

Students week schedule problem

BUT
Everything mentioned yet supporting activities only How about core business? Teaching&learning (education)

Technology at education
Long time the only technology was Overhead projector Microphon & speaker Beamer (last 10 years) Advent of internet brought to us

E-learning
(blended learning)

e-learning
For many years we were dealing with Content presentation LMS(es) Authoring systems Shortly how to transfer knowledge from expert to

learner
What about skills?

What about assessment of knowledge?

One problem (from many)

Massification of higher education

Trow Martin: Problems in the Transition from Elite to Mass Higher Education.

Learning to exam

US Credit system (

http://www.fulbright.org.nz/studyus/uni.html#credit

Course work is measured in "units" or "credit hours." a class that meets for three hours of lectures or

discussion a week carries three units of credit one hour of undergraduate credit means:
one hour of lecture (and) two hours of homework

one hour of graduate credit means: one hour of lecture (and) five hours of homework
An average class-load at the bachelor's degree level is about

15 units per semester

Necessity of computerization
Massification crowded classes Strict requirement to apply credit system To make students to study regulary (lower average of intellectual potential of average student)

Students computerization
Social networks Share solutions to assignments Share test items and whole tests

Building archives of seminar works, assignments, tests

How to fight against

Plagiarism detection Comparing documents/writings (against internet, past and current solutions) quite good explored area Comparing other types of results (images, drawings, ) more or less should be developed Evaluate test not only by content (good/bad answer), but also by other attributes (timestamps) In Slovakia every diploma thesis (dissertations,

habilitations) have to pass plagiarism detection process

What next in ICT@UNI

Commercial sector OLAP (data warehousing) BI (bussiness inteligence) Big Data

UNI Mainly still collecting data (of course, we print reports ) TUKE some attempts, but it is still not OLAP

Some questions about analysis of data from AIS

What about teachers? What about students? What about courses?

What about grades?

Another example pre-test items
