Description

“Smokers trying to quit sometimes use nicotine patches to fight their tobacco dependence. But patches don't work for everyone. New research suggests that patches might be made more effective if used in combination with hypnosis, just as they tend to work better when used in conjunction with professional counseling. A recently published study showed hypnotherapy to be as effective as standard behavioral counseling when combined with nicotine patches in helping smokers to quit and stay off cigarettes for one year.” (USNews and World Reports, 2008).
I have researched, interviewed experts, and have sampled a plethora of audio hypnosis programs that claim hypnosis can help with smoking cessation.
The Good News

The good news is that I learned that clinical hypnotherapy can be highly effective for smoking cessation; research shows that when done correctly the success rate is slightly above 66%. Compare that to the success rates of trying to quit on your own: 5%, using behavior therapy 25%, or using Nicotine Replacement Products, 25% and hypnosis looks like the best option out there. In fact, there is no other method supported by research that even comes close.

There are elements of truth and fiction in this. Firstly, it is not incredibly difficult to find a reliable hypnotherapist. Just google to find a reliable online register and you should even have a search box in which to locate a therapist in your area. Secondly, no single study is the definitive story, and many good therapists deliver the single session approach successfully for many clients . . . with understanding that if the smoking is being used to control or moderate an unresolved problem from the past, then the patient can come back to deal directly with that issue, which in turn will help release the smoking. Basically, there is no point in 'suggesting' that many sessions might be needed because it would program people to pay more and have less success, when the one session might very effectively knock the habit out. Thirdly, a real session with a therapist is far superior to any recorded session because with hypnotherapy, so much hinges on specific timing and an actual therapist can alter this according to every sign the patient gives, every breath etc. Finally, it is suggested that some kind of magical knowledge is in the hands of healthcare professionals only. Well, any intelligent person willing to research the best texts on the issues via amazon and forums etc. will gain access to such texts, and furthermore, probably have more enthusiasm and time and motivation to understand them fully. This is not to say that there is no need to find a properly qualified therapist. Instead, it is to point out that healthcare professionals often do things because it is their duty rather than what makes their heart sing. The fastest learning is the most passionately motivated . . . and often that is the patient themselves. With the advent of the internet and greater access to information, the impact of this is felt in all areas of healthcare. But if you do gain information online, check that the site and author really are reliable. Quite rightly, this document confirms that there are scams out there.
