What is Information Networks? Information networks are the computer networks that communicate with public telecommunication networks. Information networks, two important technologies: computing and telecommunications work together. Define the Network. Network (or computer network) is a way to connect computers together so that they can communicate with each other and share information. What is Local Area Network? Local Area Network (LAN) is a network system in which computers are interconnected in a limited geographical area, such as network of computers in college computer laboratory or network of computers in office building etc) What is Network-Interface Card network interface card (NI!) is used to connect a computer to other computers in the local area network. It is a circuit board that is installed inside the computer"s internal e#pansion slots. What is rid!e? A bridge is an electronic de$ice that connects two similar networks and controls the data flow between them. A bridge recogni%es the messages on a network and passes on those addressed to nodes in other network. What is "atewa#? A gateway is also an electronic de$ice or system (collection of hardware and software resources) that connects two networks and translates information from one to the other. It enables a computer or node to communicate with a computer on another different network. What is $o%ter? &outer is a communication de$ice that connects two or more networks is called router and transmits data to the correct destination on the network. It uses the routing protocols. What is Network &rotocol? All machine'base communications must follow certain set of rules for e#change of data between nodes connected to a network. (he rules to send and recei$e data are called protocols. What is 'thernet?

)thernet is the most commonly used protocol in LAN. It uses a high' speed network cable and bus topology, so it is relati$ely simple and cheaper. What is CS(A)CD? *efore transmitting the data, a node must find out if the cable is in use. If so, the node must wait. +hen the cable is free, the node must begin transmitting immediately. (his process is also known as !,-A.!/ (!arrier ,ense -ultiple Access with !ollision /etection). Define the term token %sed in networkin!. A token is a special electronic signal. It consists of a series of bits, which functions like a ticket. (he computer with the token can transmit data o$er the network. 0nly one token e#ists per network. What is *oken rin!? A computer network in which each node is connected to two ad1acent nodes or neighbors form a closed ring or loop is called ring network topology. (he token ring protocol is used in this type of network. (he token ring is closely associated with I*-, which works on the concept of a ring network and a token. What is *oken passin!? (he method of controlling access to the shared network cable is called token passing. What is A$Cnet? A&!net stands for Attached &esource !omputer network. It uses either twisted pair wire or coa#ial cable, and the star topology with hub attached to the network. What is Wide Area Network +WAN,? A +ide Area Network is a network system that co$ers a large (or wide) geographical area such as different cities of country or different countries of the world) What is (etropolitan Area Network? A metropolitan area network (-AN) is a communication network system that co$ers a geographical area of a single city. 2sually, -AN connects more than one LANs in a city or town and co$ers a smaller geographical area than a +AN. -obile phones (cellular) systems are often -ANs.

What is Network Standards? (he standards are the precise documents containing technical and physical specifications about the network being designed) Normally those standards are taken into consideration and are worldwide acceptable. What is De -acto Standard? /e facto means 3by tradition3 or 3by facts3. (hese standards were de$eloped without any formal plan and came to e#istence because of historical de$elopments. (hese standards are most commonly used by the organi%ations worldwide. What is De .%re Standard? /e 4ure means 3according to law or regulation3. (hese standards ha$e been properly appro$ed by the networks go$erning body. Write names of some networks !o/ernin! 0odies. (he names of most popular networks go$erning bodies are: American National ,tandard Institute (AN,I) (he Institute of )lectrical and )lectronics )ngineers (I)))) (he International ,tandard 0rgani%ation (I,0) (he International (elecommunications 2nion'(elecommunication ,tandards ,ector (I(2'(, formally !!I(() (he )lectronic Industries Association ()IA) What is client)ser/er network model? In client.ser$er network (or arrangement), the clients are all computers or nodes on the network and ser$er is a central computer that controls the network. In addition to control the network, the ser$er also pro$ides a centrali%ed storage area for programs and data) It has hard disks that hold the shared data file or database. 5 What is &eer-to-&eer Network model? In peer'to'peer arrangement, all nodes (or computers) on the network ha$e e6ual status. No one has control o$er others. )ach computer stores files on its own storage de$ices and has its own peripheral de$ices. (he users can share each other"s data and de$ices (or resources) as and when needed) What is 1#0rid Network model? (he hybrid network has combined features of both client.ser$er and peer'to'peer networks (or arrangements). It has a ser$er and the users

can share the data and software. ,imilarly, each node can store its own files, programs, and has its own peripheral de$ices. Define the term network *opolo!#. In networking, the term topology is the way of connecting nodes (or de$ices) on a network. In other words, a topology represents the shape of network. What is %s *opolo!#? In bus network, all nodes (or de$ices) are connected to a common communication medium or central single cable. (his single cable is called bus. (he de$ices or nodes are attached with the central cable (or bus) through interface connector. What is $in! *opolo!#? In a ring network, each node is connected to two ad1acent nodes or neighbors for communication purpose and forms a closed ring or loop. In this way the last node connects to the first node to complete the ring. In this network, all messages tra$el through a ring in one direction (clockwise or anti'clockwise) from node to node. What is Star *opolo!#? In a star network, each node or de$ice is directly connected to a central connection point known as "7ub". (he central connection may be an actual 7ub or a switch. (ypically, the nodes or de$ices are connected to the 7ub with unshielded twisted pair (2(8) )thernet. What is tree topolo!#? In tree network, the nodes are connected to each other in such a way that forms a tree like structure. (ypically to form a tree network, multiple star topologies are combined together onto a bus. In this simplest form, only 7ub de$ices connect directly to the tree bus. )ach 7ub functions as the root of a tree of de$ices. What is (esh *opolo!#? In mesh network, each node is directly connected to all node on the network. (his type of network in$ol$es the concept of routes. In this type of network, each node may send message to destination through multiple paths. What is Work!ro%p?

In a computer network, people can work together as a group e$en when they are thousands of miles away from each other. (his concept of working together is called workgroups. What is colla0orati/e comp%tin!? A group of people (teams of certain pro1ects) can share work together by means of linked computers. (he phenomenon of sharing information by $arious members of workgroup is called +orkgroup !omputing. (he workgroup computing is also known as collaborati$e computing. What is "ro%pware? A techni6ue to share information, in which many users or researchers can work on their pro1ects by sharing the same domain of information online, is called groupware. What is 2SI (odel? 0,I stands for 0pen ,ystem Interconnection. 0,I model is also known as 0,I &eference -odel. It is used for networking. It was created by the International ,tandard 0rgani%ation (I,0) to pro$ide a logical framework for how data allocation processes should take place across networks. Define Application La#er of 2SI model. (his layer of 0,I model pro$ides network ser$ices to user applications. It is responsible for e#changing information between programs running on the machine, such as e'mail programs, and other ser$ices running on a network such as a print ser$er or another computer"s application. Define &resentation La#er of 2SI model. (his layer of 0,I model performs data transformations to pro$ide a common interface for user applications. It means that data is translated between the formats the network re6uires and the format the computers of the end'users e#pect. Define Session La#er of 2SI model. (his layer of 0,I model establishes, maintains and manages connections between de$ices, so that they can talk to each other. (hese connections are called sessions. Define *ransport La#er of 2SI model. (his layer of 0,I model is responsible for breaking the data into segments, establishing an end'to'end logical connection between machines, and pro$iding for error handling.
