On June 26, 2013, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request with the FBI seeking information about the FBI’s use of drones to conduct domestic surveillance. In the wake of FBI Director Robert Mueller’s admission last week during a congressional hearing that the FBI had used drones domestically in a supposedly limited number of instances, CREW seeks to learn the source of those drones, how the FBI paid for them, who trained the FBI in the use of drones, any policies concerning the FBI’s use of drones — including legal justifications — and any memos of understanding DOJ or the FBI may have entered with other federal entities concerning drone use. CREW also requested expedition in light of the compelling public interest in this issue, particularly in the wake of other revelations about the extent to which the NSA and others are secretly gathering information about U.S. citizens.
