Having said that, the rest of the syllabus and the fitst class will give you a much better realistic preview of what the chs is really about and what it will be “like”. Course Objectives “The objective of this clhss is to provide you with a firm grounding in organizational behavior's, principles. To be effective and personally successful, managers must be able to motivate and lead their people. Similarly, organizational members need to be skilled dey » players, aware of the ‘organization’s political landscape, and able to cope with and to make change. As such, these are some of Since Organizational Behavior (OB) is a multi- discipline field, dsnwing largely on psychology, sociology, economics, history, and cultural anthropology (among others), its content will be different than your other business coutses. ‘There is, not a “method to learn” or “a set of generally accepted principles” to follow in this field. OB is more a “mindset” and a “skillset”, Since our learning, objectives are different in this class than many of your other classes, the methods used may also differ. Specific goals of the class include: * Becoming knowledgeable regarding the organizational setting and how it influences the behavior of individuals and groups. ‘* Understanding how a manager can motivate employees in a way that will move the organization towards it objectives. * Grasping leadership theory and research and the factors influericing its effectiveness. © Developing an awareness of organization change and the factots involving in enhancing or inhibiting it. Personal ‘Teach ng Philosophy Consistent with the description above, I have very definite views as to my role in the classroom. 1 should not stand in front of the class and read you a text and present an endless series of overheads. In fact, I will not likely use PowerPoint more than two, for three times all semester (imagine that). I should explain points contained in the reading, stimulate class discussions, acd pertinent examples, and evaluate student performanee. Asa result of my role, there will be no notes available and no PowerPoint shows slides to handout (because they will not exist). Questions and discussions are key to the class - so you need to be prepared and engaged, to make the leatning experience a fruitful one, Attendance 1 do not take attendance, but a latge portion of the material is only available in class, so attendance is, strongly advised and you should certainly get notes from another student if you are not in attendance. Exercises or the viewing of videos, etc. cannot be made up unless the video is available publicly. Grading You can earn up to 1,000 points in this class. The breakdown of these points is as follows: Behavioral Shaping Project Part A 100 Assessment Center Participation & Perf 100 Exam 1 278 Behavioral Shaping Project Pat B 100 Career Development Paper 100 Final Exam 215 Chss Contribution 50 Exams ‘There will be two exams (not comprehensive). If you know that you will miss the exam date, contact me to reschedule. Not studying beforehand does not constitute an emergency and will not be grounds for rescheduling. The exams will consist of relatively ‘objective multiple choice and more subjective essay questions and will be used as a vehicle to gauge your understanding of the cla terial. Class Contribution Please keep in mind that class does not requite that anyone has a cettain amount of “airtime” so please do not confuse quantity with quality when if comes to participation. Participation will be scored using a “qmuld-rater” format when possible. When a multi- ater format is not possible, pasticipation will be rated by me and be based upon attendance, verbal participation, and observable degree of preparedness. Behavioral Shaping Project ‘The behavioral shaping project will consist of you developing an action plan to modify a behavior of yours in the time that the class meets. Part A of the assignment is to (Check the Course Calendar for due date): 1, Provide a goal which meets the SMART criteria, 2. Exphin a detailed action plan as to how you will achieve your goal (in behavioral terms). ‘This should include the rewards and/or punishinents: associated with the behavior and how they will be administered (by whom and on what schedule). 3. Give me a precise pln for assessing the success/failure of your plan, In other words, how will you jguously report whether you succeeded or failed in your achieving your goal? Part B of the assignment will be to (Check the Course Calendar for due date): 1, Recap the goal. 2. Explain the behaviors used to achieve your goal (and explain how similar/different they were than your action plan). 3. Provide a precise assessinent of yout success or failure. 4. What did you learn and/or what would you do different next time (basically, a brief “after action report”) Career Development Paper ‘This will be a very brief paper designed to make you think about your assessment center experience, The paper should be no more than 2 pages with 1.5 spacing, and must answer the following questions: (1) How do the results of my assessinent center experience provide me with confirmation that my career choice? And (2) How do the results of my assessment center experience provide me with developmental work that needs to be done to put me in the best position given my career choice? Both of these responses should emphasize answering the “why?” question. Part A of the assignment is to (Check the Coutse Calendar for due date): 4. Provide a goal which meets the SMART criteria 5. Explain a detailed action plan as to how you will achieve your goal (in behaviotal terms). This should include the tewards and/or punishments associated with the behavior and how they will be administered (by whom and on what schedule). 6. Give me a precise pln for assessing the suecess/failure of your plan, In other words, how will you unambiguously teport whether you succeeded of failed in your achieving your goal? Having gone through these points, the class grading scale will be: 900-1000 800-899 700-799 600-699 <600 aoa] e|> Remembeting that class grades are eatned by you and not given by me will save-a considerable amount of embarrassment down the toad. This warrants repeating; remembering, that class grades are earned and not given will save a considetable amount of embarrassment down the road, Also remember that 1 am a behaviorist by training - you will learn what this means in time, but I will not positively reinforce “point begging” and will actively seck to extinguish it Academic Responsibility T do not phan to address every aspect of every chapter or reading assignment (please see teaching philosophy). It should be emphasized, however, this does not release you from being familiar with the material for examination and evaluation purposes. Since textbooks are written on about an 8” grade reading level (I know because I write textbooks), will akways assume that people are capable of reading, 1 will also introduce a great deal of material in class that is not covered by the readings ot the chapters for which you are also responsible, This makes coming to class vitally important and I will not provide notes (as my notes would not be helpful) if you miss class.
