Important Safeguards
1. Disconnect the powerline plug from the electrical outlet when changing needles, feet, or needle plates, or when leaving machine unattended, This eliminates the possibility of starting the machine by accidentally pressing the speed controller. Before removing the bobbin case, disconnect the powerline plug from the electrical outlet. Because of the up and down movement of the needle, work carefully and watch the sewing area when operating the machine. Do fiot pull the fabric while stitching as this may deflect the needle, causing it to break, Before cleaning the machine, disconnect the powerline plug from the elec- trical outlet. Do not attempt to adjust the motor belt. Contact the nearest service center or an authorized dealer should any adjustment be required. Before changing the light bulb, make sure the powerline plug is disconnected from the electrical outlet. Be sure to replace the face plate which covers the light bulb before operating the machine. This machine is designed to use a 15 watt maximum light bulb only. This machine is double insulated. When servicing product, use only Identical replacement parts.

2. GETTING READY TO SEW

To really enjoy sewing, get to know the machine well. This chapter will he valuable in doing just that.

Connecting the machine

Connecting the Controller NOTE: Before plugging in the machine, be sure the electrical information on the label (1) below the handwheel agrees with the local electrical supply and power switch is in the OFF position. Push plug (2) into the receptacle (4) at the right end of the machine. Then, connect plug (5) to an electrical outlet. Push speed controller plug {/) into receptacle (8) also on the right end of the machine. Changing Snap*on Presser Feet

Place new foot on needle plate with pin (3) under center of shank. Using presser foot lifter, lower shank onto pin {3} and push down firmly on presser foot screw (4) until foot snaps into place onto shank. Changing Needles

Raise needle to highest position by turning handwheel towards the operator. * Loosen needle clamp screw (1) and remove needle.

* With flat side of needle to the back, insert new needle into clamp (2) as far as it will go. * Tighten needle clamp screw (1) securely.

Check the Fabric, Thread and Needle Chari in this book for correct needle and fabric combinations. Removing Needleplate
For either cleaning or use of the straight stitch plate, available from an approved dealer, do the following: Raise needle and presser foot to their highest position. Open slide plate and place thumb under right side of needle plate (3). Lift up and pull plate to the right to remove it from the machine. Attaching Feed Cover

For darning and free-moMon embroidery, the feed cover prevents the feed from moving the material. Attach ft as follows: * Raise needle and presser foot, and open slide plate. Slide feed cover on top of needle plate, pressing tabs (1) and (2) into holes in needle plate. Then, close slide plate. To remove, open slide plate, lift front edge of cover (3) and pull it away.

If operator prefers to do these operations by removing presser foot and shank from machine, be sure presser bar is lowered to maintain proper thread tension.

Attaching Darning and Embroidery Foot

A special presser foot is included as an accessory for use in darning, embroidery, and machine basting. Attach it to the machine as follows: Raise presser bar (1) and remove existing presser foot with attached shank follow ing directions under Changing Screw-on Presser Feet. With need Ien the up position, guide darning and embroidery foot (2) onto presser bar from the rear of the machine, hooking it around the bar (1) and under the screw (3). * Make sure tab (4) of foot is fitted on top of the needle clamp screw (5). This provides the automatic lifting of the foot for manual positioning of the fabric when needle is in the up position and out of fabric. Tighten screw (3) snugly using a coin.

Winding the Bobbin

Winding of the bobbin is done before threading machine: * Place spool of thread on spool pin (1). * Choose size of spool holder (2) to fit spool. Slide it onto pin snugly against spool to keep spool from turning. Lead thread into top thread guide (3) by snapping it down into top of guide with two hands. Proceed to thread tension (4) wrapping thread once around in a clockwise direction. Guide end of thread through small hole in top of bobbin (5) and place bobbin onto bobbin winder (6). * Push bobbin winder to the right to engage the drive system and to disengage sewing mechanism for winding. Hold thread end coming through hole in bobbin and start motor. Wind slowly. Stop after a few turns to trim end, then continue winding to desired fullness. NOTE: Bobbin will stop turning by itself when full, but sewing mechanism must be reset by the operator. * Release speed controller and push winder to the left to reengage sewing mechanism.

Threading the Machine

The top thread is now ready to he threaded into the machine, Proceed as follows: * Raise needle and presser foot to their highest positions. * Lead thread from spool on spool pin and snap into top thread guide (1) by grasping thread with two hands and snapping it down into top of guide, * Following arrows in illustration, guide thread across top of machine, down the right hand channel through the tension discs, under the bottom of the chan* nel separator (2), and up the left hand channel, * At the top of the left thread channel (3), pull the thread to the left into the self- threading take-up lever and then down to the needle going through guides (4) and (5) on needle clamp. NOTE: Do not thread lower guide (5) if you are using heavy thread. * Lower the presser foot and thread the needle from front to back drawing about 4 inches (10 cm) through the eye of the needle. Raising the Bobbin Thread

The last step in threading the machine is to raise the bobbin thread. Proceed as follows: Raise presser foot

Adjusting Needle Thread Tension

Cloth Plate
The cloth plate provides a large surface to help support and guide the garment during sewing operations. The majority of applications are best performed with the cloth plate in place. for professional finishing of cuffs, sleeves, and trouser legs, the cloth plate can be removed to allow the garment to be placed around the tubular bed of the machine. With this machine there are 103 patterns available to the user. Audible Signals
This machine Is equipped with a signalling device which indicates, by means of short tones, that the electronic control center has either accepted or rejected a command from the operator. If the command is valid, the machine will sound a short beep tone. Instant Pattern Buttons

This machine makes sewing easier for the user by providing buttons for instant selection of the three most used stitches: straight stitch, zig-zag, and blind stitch. * When main power switch is turned on, straight stitch is automatically selected. This stitch is shown on the pattern selection indicator (1). * During any sewing operation, the user may select one of the three instant access stitches by pushing the button (2,3, or 4) with the picture of the desired stitch on it. The operation being interrupted remains in memory and may be resumed at any time by following directions given later in this book. Normal Pattern Selection

All patterns available to the user, except buttonhole, are shown on the pattern display panel. With the exception of the instantly selectable ones and button hole, each pattern is identified by a one or two digit number under Us picture on the panel. This number will he the key for entering the selection into the machine. The main pattern selection controls consist of four arrowhead buttons (1,2,4,6) under the pattern selection indicator (3). Use these to enter the key number. Pressing buttons (4) or (5), will change the right-hand digit of the display, increasing or decreasing the overall key number one unit at a time. Pressing buttons (1) or (2) will change the left-hand key number, increasing the overall key number ten units at a time. Normal Pattern Selection

* To select a pattern, first choose the desired individual pattern, letter, or numeral to he sewn (6) on the display panel and note the key number under It (7). After turning machine power on, use buttons (1), (2), (Contd) (4), and (5) to enter the key number into the machine. If pattern selected has a key number from 0 to 9, the left hand side of the pattern selection indicator must be reduced to zero at which time it will go dark. * if desired, only buttons (4) and (5) may be used since holding in either button will let the machine count up or down between 0 and 99, Buttons (1) and (2) make selection quicker by increasing or decreasing the entry of the key in steps of 10 units at a time. * When the key number appears or the selection indicator, the machine is ready to sew most selected patterns continuously as long as speed controller is depressed. When single letters or numbers are selected, the microcomputer only allows the pattern to be sewn once, then it automatically shuts off. These patterns must be used in conjunction with the memory functions, described later in this book, in order to be sewn more than once. REMEMBER, when machine is first turned on, it will be ready to sew straight stitch and will show that pattern on the selection indicator, NOT a key number. Use of the arrowhead controls will Immediately change the display on the selection indicator to a key number. It is recommended to make a sample using the same fabric and interfacing before sewing on the garment.

Fine Tuning Patterns

Patterns are stored in the machine along with a pre programmed stitch width and length. Use of pattern as stored will produce an acceptable stitch under most sewing conditions. However, there may be circumstances when modifications might be advantageous. The fine tuning controls allow these changes. Stitch Balance

When sewing stretch stitch patterns or buttonholes, it may occasionally be necessary to make an adjustment for proper stitch appearance. Using the balance control (1) located on the right side of the machine: * Turn dial counter-clockwise (2) to bring stitches of the pattern closer together. Turn dial clockwise (3) to separate stitches of the pattern. The dial may be returned to a center position each time after sewing stretch stitch patterns or buttonholes. Use of this control for buttonholes will be covered later in the section on buttonholing. Left/Right Needle Position

This machine allows the operator to position the needle to the left, center, or right for special straight sewing, such as collars, from the extreme left position to the extreme right position or anywhere in between. Do this as follows. With the machine set for straight stitching , and the needle out of the fabric, press the stitch width fine tuning button (1) once. The pattern selection indicator will show pattern (2).

* By moving the width fine tuning control, the needle can be positioned anywhere from the extreme left (3) to the center position (4). Pressing the stitch width fine tuning button (1) again allows the fine tuning control to position the needle from the center position (4) to the extreme right (5). REMEMBER: The micro computer memory retains Information on the last function selected, Turn the handwheel one revolution by hand, or with the speed controller, for it to acknowledge the new command. Pressing the width fine tuning button a third time cancels the needle positioning feature and returns the needle to its nor- mal center position. Needle Up/Down Control

The position, up or down, in which the needle stops when the speed controller is released can he selected using button (1) located beneath the reverse stitching button. Pattern Programming Controls

The machine memory can store up to a series of 30 patterns, which allows you either to string a sequence of different patterns together or to write. MRC Button
To use this button; This button is used to recall patterns stored in memory. If you have decided to sew a single sequence of stored stitch patterns, press the MRC button once. The red Ind icator (A) will light. When the machine finishes to sew the string sequence, the slow blinking of the red indicator will advise you to be at the end of the programmed string sequence and a lettering space symbol will appear in the pattern display window. {III. B) The machine will automatically stop. To restart machine, press MRC* again to repeat the same pattern or to select another pattern. To set the machine for continuous sewing of a stri ng sequence, push the MRC button twice. The indicator light will begin blinking rapidly. The machine will repeat the pattern string continuosly till it is switched off.

Control
After programming a sentence, a date, or a sequence of different patterns, all data stored in memory can be verified to be sure that no programming error has been made. By pressing the ENT button, all selected key numbers will appear one after the other in the display window. At the end of the stored sequence, the machine will sound a beep signal. Push the MRC" button to return to the beginning of the sequence. The machine is now ready to sew. Please note that by pressing the "MRC button once, the machine will sew only one pattern sequence and will automatically stop after this sequence is completed. To use this button: If no pattern is stored in memory, a short beep will sound when pressing the CLR" button. 4. SEWING TIPS AND APPLICATIONS

Fabric, Thread and Needle Table

Your fabric will deterrnino the choice of a needle and thread. The following table is a practical guide to needle and thread selection. Always refer to it before a new sewing project. And be sure to use the same size and type of thread in the bobbin as in the top thread supply. Su tela determina la eleccin de una aguja e hilo. Most fabrics can be placed tinder the foot by raising the presser foot lifter (1) to its nor mal "up position (2) where it locks in place. When using bulky fabric, multiple fabric layers, or an embroidery hoop, raise the lifter to the highrise position (3), thus increasing the space between the foot and the needle plate.

Lower presser foot lifter all the way down and the machine is ready to sew.

Blind stitching provides a durable way to finish a hem and is presented as an instantly selectable pattern as a convenience, if takes practice, however, so a test sample is suggested. Select blind stitch by pressing the appropriate instant selection button. Prepare the hem by folding and pressing as usual. If the hem is basted to hold it in place, as shown, be sure to place the basting at least 1/2 Inch (1,2 cm) below the fop edge of the hem allowance.

* With the wrong side of fabric up, turn the hem under creating a soft fold from the top*edge of hem. Pin or baste all three layers together. Attach blind stitch presser foot to machine as in Chapter 2. * Position the hem under the presser foot with the soft fold (1) resting against the wall of the foot (2), as shown. * Adjust the foot by turning the small knob (3) to make sure the straight stitches fall on the edge of the hem and the zig-zag stitches just pierce the soft fold. Adjusting Stitch Balance

* Check buttonhole stlich balance before full programming, using the

Adjusting Stitch Density

Adjusting Width

Also, if required, the width of the buttonhole can be adjusted to sew wider or narrower buttonholes to suit various sizes of buttons and different weights of fabric. CAUTION: DO NOT sew with twin needle using patterns as selected directly from memory, and DO NOT use a stitch width greater t han that indicated by twin needle mark on stitch width fine tuning control. Needle breakage will result. Rotate handwheel slowly by hand to visually check for adequate needle clearance before pressing foot controller. This machine is not supplied with the twin needle or extra spool pin and felt washer. These accessories are available from an approved dealer. 5. CLEANING YOUR MACHINE

To ensure reliability, regularly clean and lubricate machine. Periodic check-ups by an authorized service center are recommended depending upon frequency of use.

Removing Face Plate

CAUTION: Before attempting any procedures in this chapter, disconnect power lino plug from electrical outlet! Only remove the face plate of the machine for cleaning, lubricating, and light bulb replacement. Keep securely fastened at all other times.

Replace face plate by sliding it to the right under top edge of arm top cover (3).

Removing Light Bulb

* Remove face plate. * DO NOT attempt to unscrew bulb. * Press bulb into socket and turn in a counterclockwise direction to unlock pins.
