The Petoskey Middle School Robotics Teamadvanced to the US Super RegionalChampionships with a first place finish at theFIRST Tech Challenge State Tournament heldDecember 21 in Marshall. The team is now mak-ing plans to compete at the Super Regionals atCarver Hawkeye Arena on the campus of theUniversity of Iowa in Iowa City, April 3 through 5. At the end of regulation play last weekend thePetoskey team, known as G3, Geeks, Gears, andGadgets, was ranked eighth out of 32-teams. Theteam was then selected to be alliance partners with the Boulan Broncos out of Troy and the HexaSonics out of Allendale. This alliance partnership went on to win two out of three matches in thesemi-finals, and two out of three matches in thefinals to win the state championship. By winning,the three teams earned an automatic berth to theSuper Regionals. Eleven teams in all fromMichigan advanced.This marks the second time in three years thatthe Petoskey Middle School team has advancedbeyond the state competition. Team mentor JonCoveyou was delighted with the team’s perform-ance. “I believe we are proving that a small north-ern Michigan town can be a driving force in thisstate,” Coveyou said. “Many in the state really respect the Petoskey program,” he added. Another of the team’smentors, Mark Brown, wasquick to recognize therobot’s drive team of TaiCoveyou, David Paquette,and student field coachEmily Dudd. “These kids dida great job of driving therobot, they just kept getting better and better throughoutthe tournament,” Brownnoted.Joining Coveyou and Brown as mentors for theteam were Scott Paquette, Cheryl Tallman, andhigh school students Drew Nicholas, CameronBrown, Weston Kulman, and Jeremiah Johnson.The G3 Team is coached by Middle SchoolEnrichment Coordinator Heather Marvin. Marvinsaid, “US FIRST Robotics is a phenomenal pro-gram that encourages students to pursue science,technology, engineering and math. It is truly changing kids’ lives,” she said. “Weappreciate the generous support of individuals and our local business com-munity in helping fund this remarkableprogram and we are all very excitedabout advancing to Super Regionals in April,” she added.There are 20 seventh and eighthgrade students on the G3 team, all fromPetoskey Middle School. The students were divided into four sub-groups whofocused on different elements of therobotics project: Design, Build,Programming, and Media.In addition to winning the competi-tion, the Petoskey team was also pre-sented with the Judges Award whichrecognizes a team for having an overalloutstanding program. After the holiday break, the students will beginfund-raising and planning for their trip to Iowa.Following Super Regionals, teams may advance tothe World Championship to be held in St. Louis inlate April.
