Nominationpapers turnedin for spring elections
Three seats on the Village boardand one on the school board will be up for grabs in the spring elec-tion. Voters will choose from four candidates to fill three VillageBoard seats. All three incumbentsand one newcomer turned in their nomination papers by the January7 deadline. Incumbents includeBrett Edgerle, Susan Jaberg, andJohn Pethan. (Susan Jaberg wasappointed to replace John Renzel-mann who moved out of the Vil-lage). Newcomer Michael C.Zimermann has thrown his hat intothe ring hoping to displace one of the incumbents. For the school board, ChristinaKoberstein is the only one to sub-mit a declaration of candidacy for the seat that will be vacated byLaura Kohler, who is not runningfor reelection.
Popular KOHLER Original RecipeRaspberry Chocolate Heartssweeten Valentine’s gift giving
Once again, Kohler Original Recipe Choco-lates celebrates the season of love with beautifulhand-painted Raspberry Champagne Hearts. Each artfully crafted dark chocolate heart-shaped shell is filled with smooth ganache fla-vored with robust notes of raspberry, champagne, and cognac. I had a chance to try a couple of the hearts asI sat down with Anette Righi DeFendi, headchocolatier at Kohler Original Recipe Choco-lates. We met at the Craverie Chocolatier Café,home of Kohler Original Recipe Chocolates, lo-cated in The Shops at Woodlake. DeFendi said the chocolate hearts are one of the more popular seasonal items. Though shewasn’t the original creator of the pieces, they proved to be so popular that there was no reasonto discontinue them. I was reluctant to bite into my sample hearts.I don’t think I’ve ever seen a piece of chocolatethat shiny. I wanted to wear them as jewelry or display them on a knickknack shelf for a while. They taste as delectable as they look. The exquisitely packaged confections areavailable through Valentine’s Dayin gift ready boxes: 4-pieces for $9.99, 9-pieces for $18.99, and32-pieces for $59.99. They can beordered online atwww.KOHLERchocolates.comor by phone 800-778-5591.The Holiday Trio, which de- buted this past November, wasDefendi’s creation, as well assome upcoming candy bars, in-cluding a new peanut butter vari-ety.Defendi said the chocolate pro-duction is cutting edge just like allof Kohler’s ventures. All chocolates are hand-made at the Forbes Five-Star The AmericanClub resort, and personally approved by theChairman/CEO of the Kohler Co., Herbert V.Kohler himself before they are made availablefor purchase. I ended our interview by posing a few ques-tions posted by visitors to The Kohler Villager Facebook page:
Describe the process of developing newchocolates or flavors. What is the mostchallenging aspect?
“It’s really fun, actually. It’s a really creative process,” Defendi said. She draws from tradi-tional and popular flavors, but alsolikes to experiment with flavorsthat she thinks might make for aunique pairing. “Part of my plan isto create items that aren’t out thereor put a spin on the classics,” De-fendi said. “It involves a lot of trialand error. It’s frustrating some-times, but it’s really rewardingwhen you come up with a piecethat people love and enjoy. That’sreally satisfying for me and makesme happy that I’m able to makeother people happy and enjoy thechocolate.”Some of the other more unique flavors avail-able include Green Tea, Lavender, Asian Spice,Chai Tea.Visit KOHLERchocolates.com to seemore flavors.Defendi also considers personal favoriteswhen developing a new line. The inspiration be-hind the cranberry clove chocolates that were part of the Holiday Trio was a spiced cider thather mother would make for the holidays whenshe was growing up. “It was cranberry and or-ange juice with cloves and cinnamon . . . and Iwas thinking about the holiday line and Ithought ‘Gosh, what reminds me of Christmas?’and it’s always that spiced cider.” So Defendiwondered if she could make a ganache withspiced cider, and she did. The Cranberry Clove joined The Caramel Apple and Mint Leaf tomake up the Holiday Trio.
When will their clean line be available?
Defendi said most of their products are“clean,” meaning all natural ingredients with no preservatives. The ones she could think of off-hand were the Terrapins, toffee bark, trail mix, dark chocolate and milk chocolate bars, and allcandy bars. There are also gluten free choco-lates available. People seeking clean chocolatesare encouraged to call the Craverie for more in-formation.
Do you plan to offer chocolate coveredstrawberries?
Defendi said they won’t be offering chocolatecovered strawberries, because their goal is to produce items that can be sold online andshipped. Their chocolates have a three-monthshelf life, something that can’t be achieved withchocolate covered strawberries. All chocolates are handmade at the ForbesFive-Star The American Club resort in the Vil-lage of Kohler, Wisconsin, owned and operated by Kohler Co., leading manufacturer of kitchenand bath plumbing products.Find out more about Kohler Original RecipeChocolates at KOHLERchocolates.com; or facebook.com/KOHLERchocolates; or call1-800-778-5591.The Kohler Performing Arts Or-ganization (parents supportive of Kohler Schools’ performing arts)will present the “PAO’s GreatestHits” for this year’s dinner auctionevent on Saturday, April 26 at BlueHarbor Resort (a new venue).Watch future issues of
