Drop Cap

This is the initial larger letter at the start of a piece of text. It is to state to the reader this is where a piece of text starts or a new piece is starting.

Caption
Readers get very irritated if they cannot find the caption. But the caption must not state the obvious. Captions should add to the information in the photo, not re-state it. Such as in this photo you may not understand what the mood was like inside the church before reading the caption.

Filler
A filler is something that takes up a little bit of room on the page and often has none or little relevance to the actual article or picture but will have paid to be advertised and it may be interesting for some people.

Centre of Visual Interest

On this contents page the CVI is the photo of Kasabian. This is important as it is the first thing that gets the readers attention which then leads on to them reading the information around it.

Kicker
A kicker is the first sentence or so of a story that is in capitals or bold writing to introduce the story. It is important because if it is interesting it will hook the reader and make them want to know more.

Column
A column is important as it gives an opinion of the topic that is being written about and this may be of interest of the reader and challenge their own thoughts of the topic. Often the columnist is bias or critical of the topic as it gives the reader something of more interest to see a one sided point of view.

Flatpan A flatpan is a page that shows where the articles and adverts are laid out. It is important to have a flatpan so the reader knows where to look to see what they want to read.

Copy
This is very important for obvious reasons. The copy is the main body of text in an article/story so it must be interesting and relevant to the picture shown.

Lede
This is the beginning, usually first paragraph of an article. Journalists are taught to jump straight into the main information as to hook the reader and then follow up with the context after.

Top Heads
These are headings at the top of columns. They are important as they state to the reader what beneath is about.
