Despite all the snow and chilly temperatures over the last few months, the Town of Strathmore is still warning people to stay off the ice at Kinsmen Park. Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering, said the ice this year is odd in the sense that theres a thin layer of ice, a thin layer of water and then more ice underneath that. The way ice thickness is rated is if there is a layer of water on a layer of ice you dont count the ice thats underneath that water because you dont know how thick it is in its entirety, said Parker. Its recommended that the ice thickness be between 10 12 inches before allowing the public to skate on it, and some samples have been as low as eight inches. The town has had to err of the side of caution and has set signs up warning people to stay off the ice. With it being an active storm pond were just not condent we want to invite the public out there in light of the water layer weve seen and the measurements weve had of eight inches, said Parker. The ice at Grays Park is cleared off by Grays Limited. Parker said the town has not taken a sample of that pond, but said the depth is signicantly less than whats at Kinsmen Park. If you were to break through on the lake at Pond 1 worst case it would be up to your waist. In Kinsmen you could be up to nine feet, said Parker. The town will continue to monitor the ice thickness, and once they are condent it is safe they will clear the snow off of Kinsmen Lake.

World Drumming to their school Jan. 6 to 10. They had an instructor in the school all week teaching Grade 1-6 students all about African instruments and rhythms. Their students then showed off their djembe talents on Friday, Jan. 10 at the school wide assembly. Parents and grandparents lled the gym and were privileged to watch the kids come up in their particular grade congurations and see what they had been learning all week. The kids responded well to the instruction from their djembe leader David Kovatch. As a boy David dreamed that when he grew up he would be a music teacher. As life happens David never stopped playing music but he did not become a music teacher. Well, not till now, anyways. Now David is teaching drumming and living out his dream - to be a music teacher. It was evident in the nal assembly that Kovatch had the children captivated by the drumming as well as being in synch with one another and the audience together in their parts.

Interim budget highs and lows

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Wheatland County council members ran through the creative process that General Manager of Corporate and Financial Services Pat Lietch used to develop the 2014 interim budget and come up with a moderate ve-year plan for county spending. The gures will be rened over the next three months, with nal budget approval in the spring of 2014. In setting the 2014 to 2018 budget, administration has strived to keep property tax at a reasonable level, without sacricing the level of service that has been provided for years, said Lietch. Lietch said that she adjusted the budget by a cost of living rate of 1.7 per cent, using the 2013 Alberta Consumer Price Index. Tax requisitions and levies for school tax, Wheatland Housing and Drumheller solid waste were also based on 2013 values. Both will have to update in the nal budget. The total budget increase for 2014 is anticipated at 4.67 per cent. The tax rate passed on to ratepayers will be set in April, after the provincial linear assessments and funding formula is complete, and the 2014 Annual budget and Tax Rate Bylaw is adopted on April 1, 2014. Unrestricted surplus was redened under restricted reserve categories in 2013, and those restricted reserves are set aside in anticipation of future projects. This spreads out the costs and helps keep the impact soft on ratepayers. The importance of sufcient restricted reserves continues to play a vital role, particularly with respect to future considerations such as water, wastewater, waste transfer, gravel pits infrastructure and major capital purchases. Making regular, consistent contributions to restricted reserves can help smooth tax funding for capital assets, said Lietch. Restricted reserve transfers were $387,000 from extraordinary operating projects, approximately $ 17.37 million for the rural roads restricted reserve, $12,485,088 from capital projects restricted reserves and a few other restricted reserves. Leitch was challenged by the decreases of provincial and

Backs on to pond The re levies are based on a at .04 tax mill rate. A $250,000 Fully developed WaterSMART stormwater study cost is hoped to be recouped RV Parking with a regional grant application. The Hwy 1 Area Structure Plan and updated Land Use Bylaw at $145,000 and $225,000 respectively are hoped to be covered under another grant Downtown application. Strathmore Larger capital projects for 2014 will be the expansion of the Investment administration building costing approximately $2 million and funded through reserve and grant money, a large chunk to Property transportation for road grading, paving and building projects, $239,500 eet and equipment purchases of $2.5 million tagged, with about .5 million coming from the Ag Service Board equipment reserves. The water upgrades to the Gleichen water treatment plant are still being reviewed, but will be nalized by spring, and about $1.225 million set for Carseland, Speargrass, Gleichen, and Rosebud water projects. It is also hoped that waterline and water services for county shops and the Dalum re hall can be included. Improvements to the Carse403.324.9999 land wastewater treatment lagoons have been carried over 123 2nd Ave to 2014, and a new lift station, lagoon liner replacement for Strathmore, AB T1P 1B3 Real Estate Associate Gleichen, and wastewater eld expansion for Rosebud are katelyn.haffner@century21.ca KateRealEstate.ca anticipated to the tune of $1.6 million, with grants offsetting costs by $1,369,500. A ve-year performance review for the various nancial activities and detailed documentation was supplied to council for their review. Hale looks forward to New Year

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Strathmore-Brooks MLA Jason Hale spoke with us about whats happening in his world this year, and over the past year. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS OF 2013? As we encountered our worst natural disaster with the oods it was amazing to see the outpouring of help from people in the Strathmore-Brooks constituency, across Alberta and across Canada to jump right up and lend a helping hand where they could. It was a great day when I learned the WADEMSA contract was going to be signed by Alberta Health Services. I was happy to help and support the members of WADEMSA in all the hard work they did to secure this contract. As a caucus we worked very hard standing up for the rights of Albertans, we fought for pharmacists, seniors, children in provincial care, property rights and a future where we can take care of our most vulnerable, respect tax payer dollars, eliminate waste and mismanagement and focus on delivering good public services for all. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORwARD TO IN 2014? I look forward to standing up for the people in the Strathmore-Brooks constituency. I will continue to work for them in the Alberta legislature, holding the government accountable for our tax dollars, services and decisions they make insuring they are in the best interest of all Albertans. HOw DO YOU FEEL THE DISCUSSIONS ABOUT THE HOSPITAL ARE GOING? I have written letters and asked questions to the Ministers and AHS, advocating for expansion of the Strathmore Hospital. I will continue to pressure the government on this very important issue for our community. I will continue to work closely with the elected ofcials and medical professionals from Strathmore to achieve our goals. ARE YOU HAPPY wITH THE wAY THINGS ARE HEADING wITH THE NORTHERN GATEwAY PIPELINE? Yes, I am pleased to hear the Joint Review Panel has given the Enbridge Northern Gateway pipeline the green light. This project will allow much needed access to global markets and help spur economic growth across the country. Albertans want to see their resources developed responsively and transported safely. The panel identied 209 recommendations that would help improve the safety of the pipeline. Protecting the environment must remain a top priority as this project moves forward. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES FACING YOU AS THE ENERGY CRITIC? Currently I am working on the Licensee Liability Rating issue with a number of Junior oil/gas companies. New rules put in place are causing many of these companies to put up huge fees to continue to stay in business. This fees increase is jeopardizing many of these companies ability to keep their doors open. The Alberta Energy Regulator was designed to improve the process of industry approvals and licensing, the amalgamation of the Alberta Environment and ERCB has not gone very smoothly. We are seeing a huge backlog of applications and much confusion in the industry. I will continue to work with industry and the AER to address these problems. It is an honour to represent the constituency of Strathmore-Brooks and I am looking forward to 2014. I encourage anyone to please contact me anytime with questions, issues, or suggestions.

New Years resolutions are often based on helping ourselves. But one resolution you can make can help others. Volunteerism is just that way. Giving of your time to help others will make them and you feel good. Volunteeeism can take many forms from visiting a senior, helping out at the local food bank or assisting children and adults improve their reading skills. Make 2014 the year you volunteer. The idea of having a child share your bed is still fairly common among parents. In fact, over the past 20 years, the practice has increased 14%. Its not good for the child or the parents. For newborn babies, it is recommended that the child sleep in the same room as the parent but not the same bed. Back in 1975, mastectomy was the primary treatment for breast cancer and the 5-year survival rate was 75%. Today, there are better screening techniques and many new treatment options that have increased the 5-year survival rate to 90% and is steadily improving. The ideal length of time for a woman to carry a baby before to birth is 39 weeks. unless there is a definite medical reason to deliver the child early. This allows more time for the brain, lungs and liver to develop fully. We always think that a baby is in the womb for 9 months when its almost 10 months. Our staff would like to remind you that if you are going on a winter holiday, be sure to take enough medications to last the trip.

Wheatland farm family pick

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Wheatland County has chosen the Ostrom family for the Bank of Montreal (BMO) Farm Family from Wheatland County for 2014, but the nal choice was not an easy one. Every community has people that would t this award, said Deputy Reeve Ben Armstrong. Council members stated letters and suggestions had come in from the public and were taken into consideration when nominating potential candidates for the award. The process included considering the existing nomination process, suggestions for future procedures and which division within the county had been represented in the past. Discussion led to the Ostrom family winning out over the many deserving candidates. The Ostroms raise and breed Shorthorn and Shorthorn plus cattle on the Lone Star Cattle Ltd. farm feedlot in the Carseland area. I have the greatest respect for Ron and Carla, said Division Three Councilor Don Vander Velde. Many of the young people in this area got their rst job at their feedlot. They have always been active in the community and give of their time and money whenever it is needed. BMO set up the award to focus on recognizing contributions that enhanced the quality of life that farmers and their families make to their communities. This also includes any innovative farm practises. Each year, municipal districts in southern Alberta nominate one family. Then, all the families go to the Calgary Stampede for the BMO Farm Family Awards, which include a reception, a greeting from Albertas Minister of Agriculture, brunch, an awards presentation, and a family photograph session. The winning families are then treated to an afternoon Stampede Rodeo performance. Mike Darling, District Vice President of the Bank of Montreal Alberta and North West Territories Commercial District, said the BMO has been working with farm families for over 100 years and participating in the Stampedes Farm Family awards for 17 years. The bank acknowledges the hard work and business acumen needed for Alberta farm families to succeed and considers their contributions to agriculture, with community based values honed from pioneer spirit a foundation for communities throughout Alberta. Bob Thompson, Chair of the Calgary Stampede Board, said all the farm families reect the best of Albertas rural roots and should be acknowledged for providing food for everyones table, but also given recognition for the contributions made in enriching lives of others.

Dr. Ryder Chung

WHAT ARE SOME OF THE HIGHLIGHTS YOU REMEMBER FROM 2013? The 2013 highlight for me was accepting the appointment by the Right Honourable Stephen Harper, Prime Minister of Canada, to serve in our Conservative Governments Cabinet as Minister of State (Finance). I am pleased that in addition to continuing to work diligently as your Member of Parliament on behalf of all my constituents, I now also have the privilege of fullling my duties and responsibilities in service to our nation as a Cabinet Minister. It is a real honour to be working very closely with Finance Minister Jim Flaherty and our Prime Minister. Our Conservative governments highlight was the signing of an historic trade agreement in principle with the European Union in 2013. The Agreement will provide Canada with preferential market access to the EUs more than 500 million consumers. A joint study conducted with the European Union, concluded that an agreement could boost Canadas income to the equivalent of creating almost 80,000 new jobs or increasing the average Canadian familys annual income by $1,000. WHAT DO YOU LOOK FORwARD TO IN THE UPCOMING YEAR? Our federal governments Budget 2014 will be dominant in the work that lies ahead for me this year. I have already spent many weeks in consultations with Canadians from all walks of life and sectors of Canadas economy in preparation for the budget this spring. We are working toward balancing the federal budget in 2015. As well, our Conservative government will continue to work on policies that support jobs, economic growth and Canadas long-term prosperity. My wife Darlene and I always enjoy attending local events and meeting constituents. For example, we always look forward to the Strathmore Heritage Days Parade; the July 1 Flag Raising, and the Strathmore Crisis Society Dinner. As in all of the towns and villages in our riding, I enjoy working on projects with my provincial and local colleagues in Strathmore. HOw DO YOU FEEL THINGS ARE GOING SINCE TAKING ON THE POSITION OF MINISTER OF STATE FOR FINANCE? Things are going very well in my new capacity. While I am very busy carrying out my new duties, I am managing to keep up with the pace. There has been a learning curve of course, as is the case with everyone who gets a new job or additional work. As Minister of State (Finance) there are many

events to attend nationally and representatives of many Canadians rms, associations and individuals to meet. I participated in the APEC conference in Indonesia, I have been responding to the Opposition Parties during Question Period and speaking on behalf of our government in the House of Commons providing updates on Canadas economic performance and bringing the facts and gures from the Department of Finance to debates. WHAT ARE SOME OF THE ISSUES FACING YOU IN THIS COMING YEAR? Again, the unveiling of Budget 2014 and the work involved with helping deliver it in the House of Commons and around the nation. There are numerous other policy fronts that our Conservative government will be pursuing as we described in the recent Speech from the Throne (www.SFT. gc.ca). Families are the cornerstone of the Canadian society. Our Conservative government will continue to support and protect Canadian families by keeping taxes low, defending Canadian consumers, and supporting victims and punishing criminals. Of special note for the agricultural sector in our riding is Bill C-18, the Agricultural Growth Bill. It is good news for farmers - from plant protection and breeding to farm nances and feed. It will increase access to important programs for farmers and result in cost savings. Bill C-18 has already received wide support because the proposed changes respond to recommendations made by industry stakeholders. DO YOU FEEL PROGRESS IS BEING MADE IN THE CPP TALKS? Our government shares the position of employees, employers and many provinces that now is not the time to raise CPP costs for Canadians. During a fragile global recovery, Canadians simply cannot afford the reduced hours, wages and paycheques that a CPP expansion would trigger. Increased payroll taxes lead to less hiring and more layoffs which is especially concerning as it is very difcult to have a healthy retirement plan for tomorrow if there is no job today. Rather than raise CPP taxes on everybody, we must get the people who are not saving enough for retirement to start saving sufciently. Our government has provided massive incentives for Canadians to make the nancial decision to save. This includes the introduction of Pooled Registered Pension Plans and the Tax Free Savings Account. Our priority is to continue strengthening Canadas economy while keeping taxes low.

THE OTHER 11 MONTHS My daughter was quick to remind me that Christmas is the most wonderful time of the year and in many ways it is and was. But how does the generosity, hospitality, sense of connection and celebration that often marks the month of December rub off on the other 11 months in Strathmore? Our Christmas season began with the arrival of a visitor. The last Wednesday of November, two guys showed up at our church and simply asked for a place to stay for a couple nights. Work had brought them here and the opportunity to live in our community. What followed this arrival were acts of generosity, hospitality, and open-handedness. A couple nights stay, turned into an offer to live in a mobile home for a few weeks. Offers of evening meals turned into invitations of inclusion to Christmas family dinners. The need for a more permanent place to call home developed into a local community organizations offer of affordable housing. This was and is our community at work. The arrival also marked the challenge and stress that the stranger puts on a community and exposes the consistent need and tension within our town to create space for outsiders to enter in. Practical needs like affordable housing, transitional support, and expressions of welcome seemingly are more visible in Calgary or larger communities. What do they look like in Strathmore and how do we address them? Are there ways that because of our size we are more able to welcome people on an individual basis? December really was a wonderful month. How can experiences like ours mark and spill over into the other 11 months of the year? Village of Hussar 2013 Year in Review

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor 2013 was a busy year for the Village of Hussar. The Hussar Community Hall started their renovation project which is in three stages. Stage I was the storage addition and Stage II was the front lobby addition. Stage III will be the interior renovation and upgrades to the kitchen. Both Stages I and II were completed in 2013 with Stage III due to start in February 2014. The Hussar Community Hall is expected to be closed for functions for several months over the spring while the renovations are nished. The next big construction project started in 2013 was the Chinook Credit Union renovation and Canada Post upgrade. The bank has been under renovation for most of 2013 with many great changes taking place. In January 2014, Canada Post will be moving into their new ofce located in the rear of the bank building. The old Post Ofce is scheduled for demolition in 2014. The Village of Hussar undertook a paving project in 2013 as well. There were curbs installed on the west side of Centre Street and a block of gravel road on Centre Street was paved. This was a big project that was delayed considerably due to the rains in June but was nally nished in the Fall of 2013. We also had several repairs done to the roads to x past water main break damage. The new sewer lift station, which started construction in 2012, was completed in early 2013 and came online in April 2013. The new council was sworn into ofce in Nov. 2013 and they are very positive and eager to work on new projects over the next four years. The village plans to start upgrades to the pump house and water distribution lines in 2014 to 2015, which will be a major capital upgrade. This project will improve the water ow and pressure within the village and provide a better water supply for re suppression. This upgrade is also in line with improvements needed to tie into the regional water project currently underway. The Village of Hussar council is also working on public health issues, including the possibility of a caregiver respite program through WFCSS and the Hussar Sundowners. Council is also working on updating our Land Use Bylaw and dening the corporate boundaries of the Village which tie into plans for recreation upgrades and possibly a walking trail in the campground.

Rockyford past, future

MANNY EVeReTT Times Contributor Mayor Darcy Burke, who was reelected to his position in October, said that the biggest accomplishment we (Rockyford) had for 2013 was the construction and expansion of the sewage lagoon system. This is a project that had been stalled for three years waiting for funding from Alberta Transportation, and in late 2012 the funding became available and currently is the largest capital project that Rockyford has undertaken as part of our infrastructure upgrade plan. The completion of this infrastructure project will allow Rockyford to revisit the development of our residential sub-division and make decisions on how the community would like to see this project unfold. In 2014, council will also be studying the completion of water and sewer infrastructure upgrades on the 3rd and 4th block of Mainstreet and the eventual paving of those streets.

Challenges and success expected in the New Year

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Wheatland County Reeve Glenn Koester took a moment out of his busy holiday schedule to reect on what issues might be front and centre for the county in 2014. There were several areas that involved developing new regulations. I think this council is much more up on their MDP (Municipal Development Plan). I think they want to have a good discussion on it. Although there are opposing sides, they are very strong in what they are saying. It will be important to get everything nailed down and make sure everybody is heard, said Koester. Once the MDP is nalized, council will be looking at the Land Use Bylaw, a tool used to regulate how land and buildings are used in the county. I would like to have a good Land Use Bylaw. I think this is important for the county, said Koester. Wheatland needs to take a good hard look at what they want. Will it be industry in this part of the county and farming in another? Up to now we really havent drawn a line. He said the public can expect some open houses to gather public opinion on the Land Use Bylaw. He thinks agriculture will continue to be a mainstay for the county, but sees it supplemented by residential, commercial and industrial development. To protect those county assets, attention will be given to nalizing the Fire Service Review. Koester expects the possibility of a new re hall for Carseland will be on the council agenda and discussion will be needed throughout the implementation of the review recommendations. He said he wants to see the county work with the local re volunteers. Anything that makes things easier for them, said Koester. Ongoing attention to infrastructure, water and utility issues will be a given and road maintenance will be part of that discussion. Koester wants to see a three year plan for county roads rmed up. We will be talking about that more. Every year a little bit needs to be changed on the roads and we want to keep it current. Coordinating the various service providers and different parties involved prior to actually working on the roadway is complicated, which makes it difcult for staff to keep to the three-year time frame, so Koester hopes residents will understand when there are some delays. The Municipal Government Act (MGA) was reviewed in 2013, and council will have to be aware of any changes. Anything they say directly affects how we do business. We rely on the MGA and it gives us our mandate, said Koester, who thinks that the revised act will basically remain the same, but revisions will make it more user-friendly. Last year, several provincial studies, such as the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan, were examined by the public at several open houses. Those plans will be moving towards implementation in the coming year. The Calgary regional and municipal plans are also in the works and Koester is rm on upholding Wheatland Countys right to representation. I am not against the CRP and the land use framework, they are good things, but we have to have a voice, and an equal voice, said Koester. We are on the outside looking in and I would like to keep it that way. There are fundamental differences. If anything is imposed on us, or taken away from us. I would like to have the right to talk about it. Anybody who is making decisions on our land I would like to have our ratepayers be able to vote whether that individual remains in power or not. He was encouraged by the improved communication channels that were opened up with provincial ministers during the 2013 WADEMSA negotiations, and is hoping any discussions with provincial ministers will be as open and responsive in 2014. He has no predictions of increased taxes, as he is waiting for the provincial linear assessments, which affect the taxation formula used for the county. Last year, the county took a pre-emptive move and hired a staff member to work on obtaining more grants, which has helped with municipal budgeting and lightened the tax load for ratepayers. Koester is pleased with the results, so far. The administration ofce renovations are ongoing and 2014 will literally see nal oor plans nailed down. Koester expects the plan will be adapted to t council members, staff and the publics day to day activities. Overall, Koester wishes all the residents of Wheatland County a happy and prosperous new year in 2014, and he hopes they will stop and talk about their concerns with him. We need to have an open door policy. I like to have our ratepayers feeling comfortable enough to talk to any councillor, or come to meetings. I love it when people come and talk to us, said Koester. When I rst got here the public hardly ever came in. Now, they freely come in and speak their will. I think I would like to continue that. To encourage more open discussion the county is making a new addition to their website, by allowing access to council information packages. Koester hopes the community will nd it a helpful and informative addition. Previously the council would receive packages in a secure section of the website. We want to open that up so everyone can get those ahead of time, so people can study it, said Koester. There are many ways the public can interact on the website, so Koester hopes residents will submit comments, suggestions and photographs to increase interest for everyone in the coming year.

Standard the 2013 year in review

MANNY EVERETT Times Contributor Standard had some signicant changes over the 12 months in 2013. Two of the highlights that the community is proud of were the completion of the new Fire Hall (on time and under budget) and the new Community Hall at the north end of the village. Both were celebrated accomplishments of the year. The village also completed the following upgrades: Relined sewer line on 1st Street West from Yorick to Elsinore Paved part of 9th Ave from 1st Street East to east edge of village Performed canal line repair Installed flush valve at the east end of 9th Ave. Purchased and installed new pump at the canal Purchased and installed new chemical injection pump at the canal location to deal with taste and odour issues in the water Installed new bulk water load out system Graded some roads and alleys Did upgrades to the bathrooms at the campground/sports grounds. While many things were accomplished there is always a list of things that can be worked on, but funding will dictate what the village will be able to complete in 2014. Continued grading of the roads and alleyways, industrial road upgrades in trouble spots, the dredging of the sewage lagoon, replacement of water and sewer lines along Christian Ave. and 2nd St. West from Frederick to Elsinore. Mayor Alan Larsen says that the village will continue to work with the surrounding villages and the county on the regional water project and try to explore other avenues where we can work together. The council and staff will continue to work with the volunteer organizations within the village to make Standard the best little village we can make it, and to try and attract more people to move to our community.

Sleepless in Strathmore
PAT FULE Fule for Thought Sleep is such an important thing, but it is also one of those things we dont think about much, until were not getting enough. I have been battling insomnia for the past four days. Its caused me to have more time to think, maybe too much time! One night, I was wondering about the reality show, Storage Wars. I was wondering, what if you were watching one evening, and you actually recognized your own storage locker and your own stuff! Itd be like, hey, thats all our stuff I thought you renewed the rent!? Theyre bidding on our stuff! As a kid, I was a crappy sleeper. My mind would get worked up about the various things going on, Id stress about school and tests it went on and on. I can distinctly remember sneaking out and hiding behind one end of the couch to watch TV secretly with my parents right there (remember this is the same mom who snored away while we unwrapped and played with a table hockey set!). I will say this, a 7 year old kid should really not try and watch Twilight Zone and then try and go back to sleep! My older brother Gary never had sleep issues. When we shared a room with bunk beds, I used to get so mad that hed fall asleep so easily, while I tossed and turned! I never told him, but sometimes Id drop something from the top bunk to try and wake him, so I wouldnt be the only one still awake! There was only one time when his sleeping became a real issue, and that was more of a sleep walking issue (I read that early in his life, Elvis walked in his sleep, and once woke up outside in his underwear!). Maybe thats why Elvis used so many pills later on, so hed stay asleep, and not roam around in his blue suede slippers! Anyway, my brother got up abruptly one early morning and shufed off out of our room and down the hall. I dont know why, but I decided to follow. There he was, at our kitchen garbage can lid up, and he was about to pee there, thinking he was in the bathroom! He was also mumbling something, so I had to wake him. You know, how they say you should never startle a sleepwalking person, well I did! I yelled what are you doing? at the top of my lungs. He woke up not very happy, but he did wake up! Gary was a combination of mad, embarrassed, and groggy, but I had saved our garbage can! Sometimes, even the most dynamic teacher can wind up with a sleepy student in class. Now, Im not saying Im the dynamic one, but I do like to have some energy in the room. If someone does doze off during classroom work, I like to let him or her get into a deep sleep. Let him feel cozy and comfortable, so that when I slam a book down next to his head, it really scares the crap out of him! There do have to be some perks to the job! One morning a student fell into what looked like a very deep sleep. I quietly set the room clock ahead by a few hours, and motioned silently for the class to get up, and le out of the room. I had gotten almost the whole class out, when he abruptly woke. He looked up confusedly at the clock, then shot a fast glance our way, as the last few students and I were caught! If only, we had gotten out a couple of minutes earlier it would have been a great learning moment for this kid! So, Ive tried a few methods to sleep that friends have given me. Ive tried warm milk, a cool room temperature, a happy hour beverage, soft noises heck I even have a clock radio that plays ocean waves or forest noises. I was getting desperate, and even my sleep machine for apnea wasnt helping. Although, I really think that a part of my problem with sleep is wearing the stupid mask and its hose! I feel like Im some kind of alien trying to breathe, and even rolling over is a big chore, because you often have to move the hose too. Thats how it sometimes gets wrapped around your throat, I guess. Ive even thought about putting vodka in the water tray that would help me sleep! Or would it!? Maybe Debs more involved than I thought. I mean, when I snored badly, she did talk about smothering me with a pillow. Maybe these nights Ive had trouble falling asleep, and breathing, shes been kinking off the breathing hose! That would explain a lot of things: not falling asleep, my messed up hair in the morning, the mask marks embedded into my face! All these things point to me struggling to stay alive all night! Maybe its time to re-check the old will! (Fule for Thought is a slice of life humourous column that appears in the Strathmore Times, written by long-time resident, town councillor, high school teacher, coach, husband and father of two Pat Fule. SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Snow is a word and topic many are probably sick of by now, but the reality is its winter and this year its hitting us harder than most. One of the challenges facing the snow clearing crews is making sure the pathways around Strathmore are also being maintained and cleared of snow. Theres seldom a shortage of people walking their dogs, jogging, skateboarding, bicycling or strolling with baby carriages. These paths are used 12 months a year and should always provide both a chance for people to exercise or to simply get from one location to another, said Councillor Bob Sobol reading from a prepared statement at the Jan. 8 council meeting. He said all it takes is just 15 minutes of sitting near one of the pathways, like the one on Wheatland Trail in town, and you can see just how many people use them. Concerns were raised by residents about area pathways that were still snow covered by Dec. 27. Sobol stated that the town expects and has a bylaw that requires that citizens remove the snow from in front of their property within 48 hours. The town is part of that pathway system and he wanted to know why as a municipality the town is not held to the same level of responsibility. This year is denitely a bigger challenge. Theres a lot more snow, said Jesse Parker, director of operations and engineering for the town.

A couple of years ago there was a lot less snow and a lot more busy work. The busy work consisted of going out with the broom and sweeping in those smaller events and they were maintained a lot easier. This year it has not just been the falling snow that has been a problem; it has been the wind and the drifting snow. The sides of the pathways get built up and then the wind dumps snow into the space between. This makes it so the removal crew has to keep going in and clearing it, which can prevent them from making it to other pathways that are some of the main ones. There are more pathways every year and so thats another thing we have got to keep in mind, said Chief Administrative Ofcer Dwight Stanford. Councillor Denise Peterson questioned if there was a cost estimate for snow clearing on pathways. The reason that I bring that up is that we have just in the time that I have been here increased pathways signicantly. I just wondered if there is a cost for clearing attached pathways, if thats not something that council needs to consider because that is going to become a signicant budget item, thats not going away its going to increase and have an impact on our bottom line, said Peterson. She would like to see information being gathered and at a future date would like to discuss possibly having people or groups adopt sections of pathways, which is what happened with the TransCanada Trail.

MINOR HOCKEY WEEK

ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH Times Reporter STRATHMORE MINOR HOCKEY With roughly 380 players in their association, President Blair Wilson and the Strathmore Minor Hockey association feel that with the growing interest in hockey in town facilities are the only thing lacking. We need a proper dual or triple facility here, with obviously more than just hockey in it, Wilson said. All the major towns are putting in these big plexes that have soccer, hockey, football, Tae Kwon Do, curling, running tracks, and gyms. I think thats what this town needs. Wilson believes parents choose Strathmore Minor Hockey for their kids because there are more opportunities to develop here with more teams, and even more teams could be added with another arena. Cost is an area of concern for Wilson, who says Strathmore is one of the lowest in Southern Alberta. Im sure thats what draws a lot of people away from it, he said. For other leagues, its at least $1,000. To comparable centres, when you go into smaller areas its not as much because ice is cheaper. With us, we keep it to a minimum. Regardless of cost, parents and Wilson alike want the kids to have fun with the sport. Youve got to enjoy it to do it, Wilson said. I just hope they develop the skills to carry on hockey further in their life, be it elite or recreational. WHEATLAND AA Sandy Henry and his three AA Wheatland teams are consistently growing their numbers as well. I think we had a few less midgets this year, but we had a few more bantams and peewees. Those numbers have gone up certainly the last two years, were pretty happy with that, President Henry said. He believes the continuing interest in Wheatland AA hockey is due to the teams successes. I hate to say it like this, I think that (the success) makes them more popular, or more the place to be. Weve really tried to keep our fees down to a reasonable level, and hockeys very expensive. Were in the ball park where we offer quite a bit for the dollars were asking for; some fundraising helps us do that, Henry said. Our programs have been real solid, and that makes people trust them. Weve had good response to that. Wheatland AA is more than wins and losses, Henry said. Hockey is about developing on the ice and off the ice. We try to make them accountable, better citizens, with a harder work ethic,

Referee numbers growing, but hockey more so

ARYSSAH STANKEVITSCH Times Reporter Referee In Chief for Strathmore Minor Hockey John Culshaw is in his rst season with the head role. However, the past eight seasons, Culshaw has been the referee assigner for the league as well. He says each year the number of referees have steadily inclined. Were probably close to 60, in and around Strathmore, Culshaw said. As often as possible, Strathmore Minor Hockey tries to use two linesmen and one referee from the atom level and upwards but sometimes its not so easy. Were struggling with numbers. Years past weve always been able to three-man everything, and this year what were nding even at the bantam and midget levels, were having to do games with a two-man system. Throughout Albertas central zone, this is a problem, even with numbers increasing each year. Theres just been a shortage of ofcials lately, Culshaw said. Because theres so many of them (at the lower level) and they can only do a certain level of hockey. Therefore theres many more bodies than work to go around (at that level, so) you lose some. Bantam or midget aged refs Culshaw nds, tend to lose interest or nd other jobs that are more secure. With the sport of hockey growing at a rapid rate, referees and linesmen cant keep up with schedules, as they have to be qualied for certain levels. We had a wave of kids that went off to college and university, Culshaw said. Plus, Bassano called me and asked me to help their bantam games. In years past weve been able to help out Okotoks when theyre shorthanded. What were nding this year is were so busy trying to ll our own that we cant even do that. Each year every referee and linesman must be recertied through a clinic, and complete an exam. That clinic goes over the rulebook in great detail. Positioning is dealt with for two-man and three-man systems. Theres some online coursework thats done. Theyll cover odd situations that people have come across over the years, Culshaw said. We try to make sure were consistent with the rules and calling it fair for everybody. One part of feedback I get from coaches and managers is that the level of ofciating in Strathmore is very strong. Though the minimum age for refereeing is 13, and the majority of Strathmore ofcials are 14-17 years of age. This position could aid them later in life, Culshaw says. I mean youve got conict management, theres all kinds of different people skills youd learn. Also how to deal with stressful situations, he said. They know that theres an avenue of help for them. If youre calling it as fair as you can, and you have to deal with a coach, do what you need to. If that person needs to be ejected, thats ne. Senior ofcials coach along the clinics as well, to see who has potential to go farther in their referee career. With doing that, were able to identify kids that are ready to progress to a higher level of hockey. There are continuous levels of evaluation going on, Culshaw said. Clayton Hall, a Strathmore ofciating alumnus, now referees in the Western Hockey League. In the recent Macs Tournament in Calgary, locals Justin Geeraert and Tyler Jensen ofciated the championship nal. Theres two kids (Geeraert and Jensen) that have done lots of hockey. Theyve done Wheatland Chiefs, Wheat Kings, Strathmore Minor Hockey thats where they progressed from, Culshaw said. As to what senior ofcials look for, Culshaw says being patient and level-headed are two of the most important traits. Someone with a not quick-fuse, you could say, Culshaw said. To progress to that level, skating ability does come into it too.

Annually across the country we celebrate Minor Hockey Week. The week is a way to recognize the sport for its positive inuence and benets to the community, while also recognizing the people who bring it all together from organizers to players.

Just want to have fun (and develop)

and to have more responsibility when they leave us than when they came to us things they can hopefully use as they move along in the world, Henry said. It might be their rst exposure to having teammates from other areas of the draw zone that they become friends with too. ROCKYFORD MINOR HOCKEY Ice time is readily available for Rockyford Minor Hockey, says President Ian Koester. The ice time for us, were rst serve on it. We got our certain times booked but Strathmore really rents the rest, he said. Koester says that numbers are fairly consistent in his area as well, with three decent sized teams in Rockyford. Probably consistent from the last couple years. Maybe even up. We just got younger aged teams playing there, he said. We have an established association and we try to make everything enjoyable for the season. Developing a team mentality and working together is what Koesters team tend to focus on. Just having fun and having friends the social aspect just as much as the sport and exercise, he said. HUSSAR MINOR HOCKEY Hussars two minor hockey teams atom and novice are doing things a little differently this season, with 15 kids out of Bassano and the other 15 out of Hussar. This year for hockey, we have kind of two half teams out of Hussar. For the past couple of years, weve been teaming up with Bassano because both of our towns nd that our numbers are dwindling a bit, and we dont quite have enough to run full teams, said Barb Slemko, president of Hussar Minor Hockey. (its) probably just fewer young families; we had a few years with a big surge of girls in those age groups. Ringette has really been picking up in Hussar; a lot of our young girls are playing ringette instead of hockey. Hussars fairly new arena accommodates both ringette and hockey something Strathmore uses due to their lack of ice. Weve also got really good ice time that were able to offer to our teams and long ice times, Slemko said, and affordably so. Fees are signicantly lower here than they are in the city. Similar to Strathmore, Wheatland, and Rockyford, growing as a player and person is the most important to Slemko while enjoying time spent on the ice. Fun is the main thing. Im sure theres lots of hockey parents out there that disagree with me, but thats our main goal, she said. Also, to have equal opportunity to play, and to gain a love of the sport.

The Alberta Cup program is a core Hockey Alberta Development Program. It provides players, coaches, trainers, administrators and referees an equal opportunity to discover the great qualities of competitive hockey in a well-organized and fair Zone Camp and Select Team competition. The Alberta Cup program begins with Zone Camps (one in each of the 8 zones) that are designed to give all players, coaches, trainers and referees an opportunity to show their skills as well as receive top level instruction and evaluation from quality people identied by Hockey Alberta. The Alberta Cup prides itself on the aspects of equality and fairness when evaluating and selecting the top 20 athletes, 3 coaches, 1 trainer and 2 referees to represent each zone in the Alberta Cup competition. At the end of the four month process the Alberta Cup leads able participants to the Team Alberta Program U16 Male Provincial Camp. The Alberta Cup Program begins in March each year with over 1000 players trying out at their respective zone camps. There are eight Alberta Cup zones and each player is attempting to land 1 of 20 spots on each of the eight teams. The eight zone teams will then compete in the Alberta Cup Tournament in April of each year. Athletes eligible for the 2014 Alberta Cup program are male players that were born in 1999.

Paying respect
SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Who should be the one to lay a remembrance wreath at remembrance ceremonies? This is the question that was considered on Dec. 17, in Wheatland County council chambers, as many times the Reeve or area councillors are asked to place wreaths at community ceremonies. I really believe that the wreath should be presented by a veteran in the community, said Councillor Berniece Bland. To me, it is what it is all about. When you havent been in their situation, you cant even begin to understand what it means. Councillor Rex Harwood considered there were a number of ceremonies conducted throughout the county for Remembrance Day, and agreed with Bland that if a veteran is available, they should be contacted to place the wreath. However, other councillors pointed out that many veterans had passed on, so the selection pool was narrowing; or, they may have declined the offer due to physical restrictions or availability. Councillor Alice Booth pointed out the Gleichen community set their ceremony to address fallen heroes of 1928 this year, and the community had no issues with the ceremony protocol as it was presented. Councillor Ben Armstrong said laying the wreath is also a way to pay respect to the fallen, for the freedoms we receive due to the sacrices made for everyones freedom. He said other municipalities have representatives from council lay a wreath on behalf of their citizens, and to date, veterans didnt seem to have an issue with it. Councillor Brenda Knight said some veterans dont want to be part of the ceremony, but rather want to remain in quiet contemplation with their families, showing their respects in other ways. It is not about placing the wreath, its about remembering why they fought and making sure they are not forgotten, said Knight. WORKPLACE ACTION PLAN Results of a 2013 Workplace survey gave Chief Administrative Ofcer (CAO) Alan Parkin solid direction to develop action items that would improve Wheatland County workplace conditions for staff. He presented his plan to council for their approval. The plan has eight action items and with your approval we will proceed and direct the general manager for their implementation, said Parkin. The CAO will provide a written employee brieng, available to all staff that will outline the action plan. He recommended orientation for newly hired staff, solidication and action on approved budget items, developing a leadership campaign, implementation of a performance management system, conducting a compensation review, developing a non-harassment policy with subsequent procedures, and improvement to the washroom facilities. CANADIAN BADLANDS LEVY Council approved the levy of 50 cents per person to continue to be paid to the Canadian Badlands Ltd (CBL) for 2014. The levy, which is used by the non-prot group to develop and promote tourism opportunities in Southern Alberta. The total payment comes to $4,142.50 for Wheatland County. CBL is made up of 61 cooperative regional municipal partners, and funds are matched by provincial and federal funding. In the past, council had written the group to ask them to consider changing the levy to a formula, to compensate between large and smaller municipal population areas. To date no such formula has been developed. They also wanted a summary of the past years activities affecting Wheatland County. Councillor Alice Booth suggested they could bring up any issues at the organizations annual general meeting, which is held in the spring. COMMUNITY ENHANCEMENT A reminder that applications for community enhancement grant money need to be led before Jan. 31, 2014. The board has two vacancies, which will be lled prior to review of 2014 applications. The Community Enhancement Grant Funding is intended to enhance, promote and support groups and organizations in the Wheatland area. Ideas that bring enjoyment, benet, beauty, recreation, entertainment, or participation and enhancement to other members of the community are considered. All applications are considered on their own merit. For more information see www.wheatlandcounty.ca or call the county ofce.

In their first game, the Holy Cross Collegiate Junior Varsity senior high boys team lost to Canmore Academy 79-71. This put them into the consolation round, as they had to win their first game to make it to the championship round. They then played Riley Public and defeated them 78-42. In the consolation championship, they defeated Webber Academy 74-61 to finish fourth in the Canmore Invitational Tournament. Coach Tony Irving says, Our season is going well thus far. We have two games left to play in our league and we have only lost one game so far. We have two tournaments left to play at home and in Medicine Hat, before our Zone Tournament in March.

Elvis coming to Strathmore

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Elvis is alive and well and making a stop in Strathmore on Feb. 4. Adam Fitzpatrick is launching his Bringing it Back tour on Jan. 25, starting in his hometown of Penticton, B.C. The 29-year-old impersonator placed second in the Worlds Best Ultimate Elvis contest held in Memphis this past summer, and is ready to return to Strathmore. It was a really fun crowd, said Fitzpatrick of his last stop here. His band The Cadillac Kings, which includes the Uptown Hornz, will be joining Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatricks career began on a bet. He and some friends were watching the Elvis competition in his hometown and he quickly fell in love with the music. On a bet he signed up for the competition and in his rst year he won the amateur division. From there it just kind of never stopped, said Fitzpatrick. When hes home Fitzpatrick spends a lot of time studying and preparing, but otherwise he doesnt do much to get ready for a show. When it comes down to a show I just try to keep my throat healthy for the show and just try to prepare a good list with a balance of fast and slow songs so that it will be an enjoyable show, said Fitzpatrick. I still try to be myself on stage, Im not trying to be Elvis on stage. Obviously I want to give the illusion that they are watching Elvis, but I never try and act too much like Elvis, I try to keep it pretty authentic for a show. He said non Elvis fans who have come to his shows have

Capital project requested

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Director of operations and engineering Jesse Parker made a request to purchase a skid steer snowblower replacement on Jan. 8. The towns current skid steer snowblower was bought in 2006, and over the years has incurred some damage resulting in it being damaged beyond repair. He admitted that some of that damage had been due to improper operations and stated that the town has scheduled training for staff to ensure they are comfortable with the equipment and know its limitations. Quotes on replacing the equipment have come in at $7,250 including GST. Council approved the request, creating a new 2014 capital project with the funds to be drawn from the nancial stabilization reserve. Prior to replacement three quotes for a suitable replacement will be requested. WELCOMING NEw FACES Councillor Bob Sobol suggested at the Jan. 8 council meeting welcoming new businesses to town. Chief Administrative Ofcer Dwight Stanford said that approximately 10 years ago the mayor at the time would visit new businesses and welcome them to town. There would be a ribbon cutting ceremony. It would be really neat if we could encourage all of them to let us know and set up a ribbon cutting. Its nice to do that, said Stanford. Deputy Mayor Denise Peterson suggested the possibility of creating a partnership role with the Strathmore and District Chamber of Commerce. GALA SUCCESS Councillor Pat Fule mentioned that the Youth Club of Strathmore New Years Gala was a success. Approximately 100 people attended the inaugural event, and approximately $8,000 was raised after costs. Shannon Zieman, program director with the Youth Club said they would denitely be hosting another New Years Gala this year. LOAN APPROVAL Council approved a loan of $10,000 to the Alberta 55 Plus Summer Games Society on Jan. 8. The loan has been granted for a six-month term interest free.

Novice tournament a success

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Approximately 170 young novice hockey players showed off their skills Jan. 11-12 at the Strathmore Family Centre for the annual novice tournament. Five teams from Strathmore hosted seven other teams from across southern Alberta. They did good, said Kimberly Proust, tournament organizer, of the Strathmore teams. It was a little bit of a hard ght for most of them, but it was a good weekend. All teams were awarded medals for their efforts. It was just kind of fair across the board, Proust said. It was novice, so we dont do playoffs or anything. Everybody has their three games, and has fun with the rest of the tournament. Many parents assisted with the weekend, along with the tournament committee. We had great help. Id really like to thank all those guys, Proust said. A big thank-you is due to Enmax as well, who donated money towards the tournament. Plus, they gave each Strathmore team money to buy apparel, Proust said. Now all novice Strathmore teams have matching track suits and toques. They look absolutely fantastic! Proust said. There was a photo-booth on hand at the tournament, so the squads could capture the moment.

The Holy Cross Collegiate (HCC) Hawks boys had their rst junior varsity basketball game against Foothills Composite High School on Dec. 10, and were defeated 80-35. On Jan. 9, the Hawks were the ones punishing, as they defeated Notre Dame Collegiate 79-39 during their rst home game of the season. It was a good game. A lot of the things that we set out to do, we did fairly well, HCC coach Tony Irving said. I thought they pushed the ball very well. They were getting the ball fast enough down the court so the other team hadnt properly set up defense, which is where you draw more fouls, but its also where you create more two-onones and three-on-twos. HCC dominated defensive rebounds, which eventually led to many offensive rushes during the matchup against Notre Dame. This, and fouls, will be the key points for the Hawks upcoming tournament in Canmore from Jan. 11-12. This game was a big tune-up for our tournament in Canmore on the weekend, Irving said. One of our big concerns is really going at individual players who have strength on the other team and getting them into a little bit of foul trouble thats going to be one of our goals every game. Irving and the Hawks will get a closer look in Canmore at some squads that they may face later in the season once again. Some of these teams (this weekend) may be teams in our league, Irving said. Youre not very far into a game when you see who their best players are. The objective offensively should be always get their best players in trouble. The HCC boys team was under the varsity category last year; however, most players graduated this past June. We have a fairly young team. I have three Grade 11s and eight Grade 10s, Irving said. We do have three people that played on our varsity team last year, who provide a lot of leadership. Im a real systems and mechanics coach, so we have a long way to go. In their second game of the school year, the Hawks defeated Oilelds High School 74-68 on Dec. 17; with this second win in a row, the Hawks hope to have their streak continue into their next game at home against Strathcona Tweedsmuir on Jan. 30.

Happy New You

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Having successfully run her rst tness challenge in the fall of 2013, Sarah McCulloch, a graduate of NAITs Personal Fitness Trainer program is back with a new 10-week session titled Happy New You, running from Feb. 5 to April 16. People that kind of want to get out of a rut, or theyve been doing those crash diets, just going in circles this tries to get them into a routine in making tness part of a lifestyle, McCulloch said. It focuses on a full body workout; getting all the muscles activated, cardio, exibility, everything. McCulloch continuously offers FleX tness classes throughout the year, three times a week at Strathaven Hall. While in the Happy New You program, those classes are all included. If, however, classes cannot be attended, McCulloch also provides weekly workout programs to complete as well. Nutritional support is key to the program, McCulloch said, as most people dont realize they overeat. Were trying to do it from a basic way so its not too much information. Every week I assist them, and give them weekly programs to do on their own, McCulloch said. At the end of ten weeks, they should already feel like, okay, Im already in a routine, lets keep going. Ill still have the classes running, and you can just register for those. Participants will be judged to determine who wins the challenge, not necessarily just by results but by attendance in classes, completing home or gym workouts, and participating in weekly Skype meetings. Points will be assessed for strength increase, and based on what goals participants had set for themselves. Everyone has different goals of what they want to get out of it whether its ten full pushups or losing ten pounds, McCulloch said. I keep that from the beginning and assess that on a weekly basis. I get them to write up a testimonial of their experience and how it helped them. Those testimonials will then be posted online, and are tallied for who has the most votes to help determine a winner of the challenge. Prizes include Lululemon gift cards, Runway Hair Salon gift certicates, and FleX class gift certicates. I just know based on experience, if people dont have goals, theyre not going to get anywhere, McCulloch said, who has been a personal trainer for seven years. If they dont have anyone challenging them, theyre not going to get any changes. After the Happy New You session, McCulloch plans on running another in the summer, to take place at Kinsmen Park. The deadline to register is Jan. 30, and costs $799. Gift certicates are available as well. Contact Sarah at smcculloch2@ hotmail.com or 403-901-5443.

MADDIE DSH - Tabby Female DOB May, 2007

Maddie was found about 4 yrs ago - living outside. We believe Maddie was probably someones pet at one time as she shows some trust towards people...at some point she must have run away or was abandoned and reverted to feral behavior to survice. Maddie has been with us for 4 yrs, and she has really come around, she rolls at your feet for attention now and will meow at her bowl to tell you shes ready for her canned food. Maddie is still easily startled and will run and hide under the bed when she hears anything loud or someone moves too fast. She would do remarkably well in a quieter home where someone is home most of the time and there are no young children to scare her (because kids move fast and can be loud). She will make someone a great pet and she is very good with other cats.

The Hussar Curling Club held their annual mens bonspiel from Jan. 5-11, with eight teams of four vying for the cash prize. Teams came as far as Bassano, Standard, and Cluny to compete. The UFA Bisons had a successful road-trip to Edmonton, defeating the Knights of Columbus Pats 6-3 on Jan. 11, and the MLAC United Cycle Maple Leafs by a score of 8-3 the next day. In the 6-3 victory, team captain Mackenzie Bauer scored a hat-trick, including one on the powerplay. We got Mackenzie back, that was helpful, Bisons coach Dan MacDonald said. He got to play in the Macs, and then he got sick with the u. So he hasnt played much in the last two months. Him getting a chance to participate helped. Troy van Tetering added a goal, while Mason McCarty scored the other two. McCarty returned to play earlier in January, after having missed the Macs Tournament with a wrist injury. McCarty notched another two in the win over MLAC, as did call up Markus Lavallee from the Rockyview Raiders of the AMMHL, including the game winner. He was called up because we do

have injuries, but also because hes played really well with the 15s, MacDonald said. If they play well, and we need an extra player, they get a chance. He did a really well with us in that game. Lavallee has 13 points in 20 games this season for the Raiders, and may stay in the lineup due to illnesses to Ryan Zeniuk and Connor Boyd. They got the u, and its just not going away, MacDonald said. Theyre not able to practice, thats just the way it is. Zeniuk and Boyd are expected back in February, after the Bisons have a week off following a matchup against the Canadian Olympic Womens Team on Jan. 17 at Winsport in Calgary. They really play well defensively, MacDonald said of the ladies. Were going to have to play like we did last weekend. We have to do things to create goals drive the net, and play the puck real well. If we do that, then well be okay. Theyll play good defensively, thats what they do best. The teams next home game is Jan. 19 (2 p.m.) versus Red Deer.

Braves nd their groove

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Led by two Kyle Crncovic goals, the peewee Wheatland Braves defeated the Foothills Bisons in Hussar on Jan. 11 by a score of 3-0. Hassan Akl scored shorthanded midway through the third for the nail in the cofn. Braves goaltender Kenny Holt-Stewart made 35 saves for the shutout. We switched lines up a little bit and tried some different combinations, said Braves coach Keith Klemmensen. It worked well. The game against Foothills, that was probably our best effort of the year. That team showed nally what they were capable of doing. The Braves continued their efforts the next night against the Medicine Hat Venom Black, winning 8-2. Wheatland scored ve powerplay goals both teams spent a combined 44 minutes in the box. They played pretty condent against Medicine Hat. The good thing was we had eight different guys score, Klemmensen said. Were not just dependent on the same guy. Ryan Conroy had one goal and two assists, while Ethan Phan, Tarun Fizer, and Crnkovic had two point nights. The Wheatland Braves have their next challenge against the Lacombe Rockets on Jan. 25. BANTAMS RALLY IN THIRD Against the Red Deer Steel Kings on Jan. 8, the Wheatland bantam Warriors were down 3-2 at the end of the second. The Warriors came back strong in the third with a ve-goal effort, and a total of 55 shots on net. Rylan Longmuir had ve assists, while Chayse Hnatowich scored four, and Brady Skifngton added two. The Warriors have their next game against Medicine Hat on Jan. 24 in Hussar. CHIEFS WIN ONE, LOSE TWO After losing 7-2 to CRAA Blue on Jan. 8 (goals scored by Cole Busslinger and Blair Roszell), the Wheatland midget Chiefs came back to life with a 4-3 win over the Lacombe Rockets on Jan. 10. Though it was 4-2 at the end of the second, and Lacombe came within one, Chiefs goalie Mike Conrad stopped 37 of 40 shots. Coltyn Herman had three assists in the win, while Busslinger added two more goals and an assist. However, the next day Mckay Bray had the lone Chiefs goal in a 4-1 loss against the Red Deer Indy Graphics. Red Deers offense proved to be too much Conrad stopped 51 of 55 shots. The next midget game is on Jan. 17 against the Bow Valley Timberwolves.

Memories of Carseland School

The following are some memories from a few students and staff at Carseland School over the years. Instead of focusing on one memory, we decided to list a few in hopes of prompting your memories as well:

1014 Westridge Road, Strathmore AB

DO YOU REMEMVER WHEN:

- In the 1960s all the high school students hid under the stage of the old school. A younger student told the teachers they had all gone gopher hunting. - The principal gave the high school students the keys to his car to drive down to the river over the lunch hour (1960s again) - Teacher Tom Craver took 15 students on a weekend camping trip-all on horses, and to sleep in tents! - The school didnt have a gym so the students walked over to the Community Hall for gym. Lines were painted on the hall oor and hoops hung from the roof. Students recall that the oor was real cold when doing push-ups - School Christmas concerts were held in the Hall. The whole community attended. - A new gym was nally built. Four grade 9 students got the strap for pushing a workers car into the ooded back yard of the school. (Part 1)

Wheatland well represented

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter The Southern Central Alberta Hockey League is hosting its All-Star Weekend on Jan. 19 in Medicine Hat, with great Wheatland AA representation. Peewees, bantams, and midgets were chosen by their age group coaches, selecting 12 forwards, six defensemen, and three goalies for the North Division and the South Division. All-Star time is always hard. Youre promoting a team concept and then youre choosing individuals out of there, said Sandy Henry, Wheatland AA president. Its always a hard job. For the 14-7-2 midget Wheatland Chiefs, goalie Mike Conrad is 11-5-2 with a .931 save percentage and was added to the North All-Star list, beside defenseman Jake Vergouwen; he has 11 points on the year. The Chiefs Coltyn Herman sixth in league scoring with 36 points was selected, alongside fellow forward Cody Willis, who has 34 points in the season. I have seen them only a couple times, said Henry, of Herman and Willis. I think theyve been AA players for a number of years. It doesnt surprise me that they certainly lead the offense for the most part on that team. I heard the coaching staff made it as well. Chiefs coach Devin Olson and crew will be behind the bench for the midget North squad, while Wheatland Warriors bantam coach Mark Laycock will be coaching the bantam North All-Stars. Two out of three for us got selected based on their records up to November. Both of those teams were sitting at rst place at that point, Henry said. Im real proud of those guys, and real proud of the job theyve done. Well be well represented. The Warriors are still rst in the league with 46 points, and have an amazing 155 goals for, and 49 goals against best in both categories. Their record sits at 22-1-2. Named All-Stars were forward Kyle Merkosky (fth in league scoring), forward Robert Butterwick (26 points in 25 games), and defenseman Cole Clayton. Warriors netminder Ty Tarvyd was also named to the North All-Stars; Tarvyd has a 12-1-0 record, a .930 save percentage, a 1.46 goals against average, and four shutouts making him rst place among league bantam goalies. Theyre a very upbeat and young team. Half their roster, if not more, are made up of rst year players. For them to be that competitive in that league kudos to Mark and his crew. I think coaches past as well, as (the players) have to come here with a certain level of competency, Henry said. Obviously, thats a group, where Keith Klemmensen, our peewee guy, had a majority of them last year. I think they got them started right, which allowed Mark to integrate them easily into his program. Three of Klemmensens current peewee Wheatland Braves players were named All-Stars as well: forward Tarun Fizer, who has 38 points in 23 games, rst-place in save percentage (.910) goalie Kenny Holt-Stewart, and defenseman Connor Bertamini. I think Keiths team is on the rise. I think that peewee group got continuously better to a point where theyre really competitive even against the top teams in the league, Henry said. Theyre moving their way up, Im excited for that group. Being the new boys in town, it takes them a while to mesh into our philosophies, but theyre doing a real good job getting there now. Were starting to see some positive results. The peewee Braves are fth in the North division at 9-11-3. I think it was a real new group. Keith didnt have a lot of returning guys, and thats ne, it just means that he did a good job moving guys on. I think it took Keith a little time at the start of the year to build a team atmosphere; you get kids from lots of other programs, Henry said. Hes got a certain style and certain work ethic he wants; he wants those players to play at full speed. I think certainly the players that were selected have been real good, honest players.

Yoga for the athletic community

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Pranava Yoga Studio wants to reach out to the athletic programs in Strathmore, and help them improve on the eld, on the court, or on the ice, by adding yoga to their workout regimen. Yoga for Young Athletes will teach those involved proper warm ups and proper cool downs. What weve noticed is there seems to be a lack of understanding towards the importance of how to stretch. Too often we see these kids come for two hour practices and they get started right away, afterwards they take a knee, and off they go, said Becky Stone, Pranavas owner. Were really, really excited about this program. Its something that has been brewing in my mind for quite a while. Stone and another teacher at Pranava, Kelly, will be running the classes for any sort of young athlete, including volleyball, soccer, basketball, rugby, lacrosse, football, or hockey. We have this great range of fantastic athletic programs. Were all familiar with how strong our hockey program here is, Stone said. You can look throughout the professional athletic world right now, and see that yoga is becoming a standard. The six-week Yoga for Young Athletes program will begin on Jan. 21, but on Jan. 19, an open class will be held for coaches and parents interested, to gather a deeper understanding of what the program can offer. PRENATAL pREpARATION Pranava Yoga Studio owner Becky Stone is looking to assist expectant mothers with their pregnancy with a new class being brought to the studio. The six-week program titled Prenatal Yoga Classes began Jan. 11. Its for all trimesters, with a focus on making sure that safe and healthy movement is happening for moms, Stone said. You get all the benets of what yoga can offer; increased strength, increased exibility, a sense of health, well-being, the ability to stay in a calm state when things are chaotic. Stone believes yoga can also help mothers during the actual delivery as well. Theres a lot of neat things like oral toning, so, teaching women how to breathe properly. When it comes time to deliver their baby, they bring some really great tools into the birthing process.

Ice Warriors two up in New Year

MEL BOSCHEE Strathmore Ice Warriors The Ice Warriors were certainly craving the Christmas break, it was a busy rst half of the season and there was a lot of learning that happened. Learning how Coach Randal, Coach Ben, Coach David operate; learning how to gel as a team and trying to gure out how to improve their own skills. Well it was an awesome rst half and the start of the New Year has been no different. The Ice Warriors hosted Calgary Bow View Riot on Jan. 4 marking the rst game of 2014. It was a nail biter as the play was evenly matched. Alex Mackay was strong in goal and when the rst period buzzer sounded the score was 3-2. Upon a quick refresher and a pep talk, both teams scored two goals apiece leaving the nal score in the Ice Warriors favour 5-4. This past weekend took the Ice Warriors to the big city on Jan. 11 to take one the Northwest Kaos. A couple of extra practices to wear off any out of shape ringette girls certainly didnt hurt. When the Ice Warriors stepped on the ice and the game started it was a back and forth match. Again with Alex Mackay holding strong in net gave the Ice Warriors a lot of extra chances. With those extra chances, Ice Warriors put another W in the boards with a score of 16-3. Goals scored this past couple weeks: Cosette Lacroix, Laura Sader, Carly Krahenbil, Jaylin MacLean, Olivia Wilson, Cayley Boschee, Payton Jensen, Meghan Munchrath, Susanne Sevcik, Grace Praeker. Supporting teammates and assists went to Joely Dahm, Mackenzie Hansen (AP). Next league game is Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4:30 p.m. against Calgary Bow View Vortex. Come out and watch the fun.

DID YOU KNOW?

When preparing your home for the real estate market, have you heard the phrase "Less is Best?" Here are a few helpful points for you to consider when you are preparing your home for the market! Depersonalize - take down and put away pictures and personal items that will distract Potential buyers from focusing in on the home! Remove any items from counters and walls that you do not need so It opens up counter space and wall space for a more spacious look! Arrange furniture so it maximizes the space in each room, but still makes the room look attractive. If you have the ability to store unused furniture in a basement or garage to make the rooms look spacious it is something to consider! I'm looking forward to a great 2014, I hope you are too!
