UNITED STATES NAVAL ACADEMY
Hackers are getting more sophisticated and harder to combat. That’s likely the message most midshipmen took away with them after a lecture Jan. 14 by Kevin Mandia,
founder and chief executive ofcer of the cybersecurity consulting rm Mandiant, which was recently acquired
by FireEye, Inc.
A former Air Force intelligence ofcer, Mandia founded
the company to help organizations detect and respond to computer intrusions. Calling on more than 15 years of experience in the
cybersecurity eld, Mandia gave the midshipmen real-
world examples of hacking activity to show them how it’s done and, more importantly, how it’s detected.U.S. Naval Academy midshipmen can now pursue a Bachelor of Science in nuclear engineering. The new major in the Engineering and Weapons Division will be fully available starting with the Class of 2017.
Midshipman 1st Class Jillian Coughlin got white Christmas this year, but not the kind you might expect.Coughlin, an honors oceanography major, spent her holiday on an arctic adventure to the South Pole. When Midshipman 1st Class Eugene Yang (above,
right) was a plebe, his Plebe Summer squad leader encouraged the otherwise quiet and unassuming
young man to step up and be assertive.
