This book has taken a very long time to write. Two of the authors of the book started towrite it in parallel with teaching an undergraduate module at the University of Durhamwith the same title, “The Archaeology of Identity”. Initial drafts of three of the chapterswere ready in 1998 but because of various circumstances the book could not befinished. This has been finally possible thanks to the kind involvement of Stasa Babićand David Edwards, alongside much rewriting of the earlier drafts. We are extremelygrateful to Routledge for their immense patience as well as their encouragement asvarious deadlines slipped away.We would like to express our appreciation to the many colleagues who have shared their research and ideas with us, both in person and in print; we hope that all inspiration has been appropriately acknowledged, and we all have people to whom we owe a particular debt. Thanks are given to Marie-Louise Stig Sørensen and Margarita Sánchez Romerofor their comments on the chapter on gender. For those on age and ethnicity thanks toMarie-Louise Stig Sørensen (again!), J D Hill, Becky Gowland, Jo Sofaer, Pam Graves,Simon James and Geoff Harrison for help and discussion at various stages of whatturned out to be a rather lengthy writing process. Many thanks to Zorica Ivanović, DašaDuhaček, Ivana Radovanović, and Aleksandar Palavestra for their comments and soundadvice in relation to the chapter on status. Needless to say that the kind patience of all of the people mentioned above does not, of course, render them responsible for our flaws. We would also like to thank the various cohorts of Durham undergraduates who took the module; they were stimulating to teach, and helped us to refine many of our ideas,3
