Course code: INUR 3316 Course Title: Nursing Care in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing Number of Credits: 3(2-2-5) Semester: 3rd Semester Academic Year: 2013 Program: Bachelor of Nursing Science Program Course Status: Major Course Major Lecturer: Ms.Gladys U. Desmanos 1. Course Description Evolution, concepts and theories of mental health and psychiatric nursing therapeutics, roles and responsibilities of the professional nurse, principles of psychiatric nursing therapeutics, community mental health, deviated mental health, understanding of therapies using the nursing process with emphasis on caring and family participation, within legal limitations and professional codes of ethics, in order to maintain, promote and protect the physical, psychological, social and spiritual health of individual, groups, families and communities. 2. Course Behavioral Objectives On completion of this course, the students will be able to: 2.1 Define the concept, self-awareness. 2.2 Define psychiatric-mental health nursing. 2.3 Distinguish between mental health and mental illness. 2.4 Explain the purpose of theory. 2.5 Describe the types of theory used in psychiatric nursing. 2.6 Discuss then relationship between nursing theory and research. 2.7 Articulate how the nurse uses knowledge about spirituality and culture when caring for clients from various ethnic groups. 2.8 Articulate why nurses must become knowledgeable about legal and ethical issues in psychiatric nursing. 2.9 Explain forensic psychiatry and the role of the forensic nurse. 2.10 Discuss the concepts of loss, grief, mourning, bereavement, and end-of-life care. 2.11 Describe the types of losses that an individual with a psychiatric disorder or medial illness can experience. 2.12 Discuss the nursing process, and articulate the purpose of using a nursing diagnosis in the psychiatric-mental health setting. 2.13 Explain the process of communication. 2.14 Formulate a list of therapeutic communication techniques. 2.15 Explain the concept of milieu therapy 2.16 Apply the steps of crisis intervention 2.17 Understand the purpose of individual, couple, family and group therapy. 2.18 Understand the psychopharmacology. 2.19 Describe somatic therapies 2.20 Explain and understand the different psychiatric disorders. 2.21 Articulate why nurses must be knowledgeable to the different psychiatric disorders.
