Shippingcontainer architecture
I adore these shipping container dwellings in the Texas plains at Cinco Camp, Roger Blacks ranch. Black out-fitted five shipping containers on his 3,000-acre ranchas a minimal impact and temporary installation. There are a slew of fabulous container housing compa-nies out there that can complete a vacation cabin, back-yard studio, etc. for you out of a simple single shippingcontainer. I am loving these three companies, who keepit simple, but manage to make each container seem likea stylish modern amenity. HyBrid Architecture is de-signing Red Mountain Ski Resort, located in Rossland,British Columbia. Currently, there is a historic lodgeserving the mountain that the resort is looking to ex- pand. This lodge has sentimental value tothe community, and our proposed expan-sion will seek to enhance its diverse gath-ering spaces, access to natural light, andoverall functionality. Fundamental to this project is the need to improve efficienciesof service and consolidate the programcurrently incorporated in several adjacentoutbuildings. One primary challenge is to build an effi-cient and appealing addition to the exist-ing lodge, while keeping construction costs to a mini-mum. This will be accomplished through utilizing amodular based structure that is built primarily off-siteto reduce construction time, improve quality, and con-trol costs. The resultant building system is conceivedas a merging of wood-framed modules with traditionalheavy timber construction. It’s substantially crafted from recycled materials so thatyou can enjoy the natural environment ‘responsibly’without contributing to the construction industry’s on-going wastage of our natural resources. It has a small ecological footprint making it a discreetaddition to well-established natural habitats. It’s compact, energy efficient and entirely ‘off-grid’saving on the cost of both bringing utilities to the siteas well as protecting you from the rising cost of oil andelectricity prices. It’s a building which adapts with your own individualneeds - you can transport it from site to site, add moreunits as your family or budget expands or re-orientatethe units to suite the topography and best views your site has to offer. It’s an affordable option that allows you to enjoy your recreational space now rather than saving for years tomeet the rising cost of building that second home. It’s factory-fabricated to unbeatable standards avoidingthe hassle, expense and wait for reputablelocal contractors and craftsmen. It’s secure like no other home allowing itto be left in remote locations for monthsat a time, with no worries of pests, van-dalism or break-ins.We thought people all over the worldshould have a chance to see what Cana-dians get up to when they turn their headsto design, technology, and other imagi-native persuits. The All Terrain Cabin(ATC) was dreamed up to send Canadian design on aworld tour of International Design Forums, Consumer Home and Interior Design Shows, Environmental Con-ferences, and Special Events, as well as more casualvisits to small towns, open spaces, and the downtowncores of major urban centres. For that purpose, we designed a small home, a cabin, using the standard ISO shipping container as the basisfor the structure and outfitting it totally with CanadianDesign and Technology*. The result is as smart as it isefficient, suitable for a family of four and a pet to liveoff the grid in comfort and contemporary style. It trav-els by train, truck, ship, airplane or helicopter, folded
