PITTSBURGH
—New season, sameclutch Steelers.Ben Roethlisberger did it again Thursday night, leading the Steelersdownfield on the first possession of overtime, as Pittsburgh outlasted the Titans, 13-10, to begin the 2009 NFLregular season. It was a game withmany twists, including an unfortu-nate twist of Troy Polamalu’s knee. Here are some key storylines comingout of a hard-hitting opener:
Polamalu will miss time.
The Steelers’ safety left late inthe second quarter with aleft knee injury. Coach Mike Tomlin called Polamalu’sinjury an MCL sprain, butfurther tests would be done.“Those things have a range of 3-6(weeks),” Tomlin said. “It is specula-tion at this point.”
The Titans were tenacious.
The Titans’ defense still looked fero-cious, sacking Roethlisberger fourtimes. Apparently they will be finewithout Albert Haynesworth.
Santonio Holmes was superagain.
He was the best receiver onthe field (nine catches, 131 yards, onetouchdown). That Super Bowl MVPtrophy has not gone to his head.

Five-star shootout
Young guns Pryor, Barkley will shapenational title picture in Columbus clash
BY DAVE CURTIS |
Saturday’s Ohio State-USC showdown pits the No. 1 QB recruits from the pasttwo years—OSU sophomore Terrelle Pryor and Trojans freshman Matt Barkley. They might battle for All-American honors and Heismans down the road, but alleyes are on their first meeting. Here’s a comparison of the stars-in-the-making:
He can launch the ball, and hecontinues to work on harnessingthat power. His physical strengthmight put him an eyelash ahead.
ARM
Edge
A tough call, since he’s thrown 19passes as a collegian. But the tutorsfrom his high school days raveabout his ability to make throws.A year of experience helps hiscause. But he struggled in 2008’sbiggest spot (Penn State) and splittime at quarterback with ToddBoeckman in the Fiesta Bowl.
POISE
Edge
Both coaches compliment hismakeup and command of theUSC offense. “He has an excellentpresence about him,” OSU’s Jim Tressel said.Pryor’s 4.33 40-yard dash makeshim the fastest Buckeye. He thriveswith the ball in the open field. “Hehas a marvelous ability to take off and run when he has to,” USC coachPete Carroll said.
QUICKNESS
Edge
Again, limited body of work here, but it looks as thoughBarkley will leave the runningand cutting to his teammates. The Ohio State pass rush wantsto see him move a little, though. His quick ascendance last yearcaused a small schism in thelocker room. And that “Vick” eye-black display last week broughtOSU some bad PR.
INTANGIBLES
Edge
Listen to the coaches, and thiskid’s The Natural. “He had to haveeverything going for himself,”Carroll said. Otherwise, he’s stillbacking up Aaron Corp.Lots of speed around him, buthe misses last year’s experience inthe backfield (Beanie Wells) andout wide (Brian Hartline and BrianRobiskie).
SUPPORTING CAST
Edge
Tons of experience upfront, a Taylor Mays-led defense, and ahealthy Joe McKnight. Tough tobeat all that.

Hall of Fameenshrinement ceremony
6:30 p.m., ESPN, NBA TV
It’s been a long time since a group this dis-tinguished entered basketball’s Hall of Fame.Indeed, it could be argued that this class—ledby Michael Jordan, but also including JohnStockton, David Robinson and coaches JerrySloan and Vivian Stringer—is the greatestever to enter the hoops Hall. If you’ve got aticket, you’re lucky. The venue was movedfrom the Hall of Fame to the bigger SpringfieldSymphony Hall, but even still, fewer than 3,000will be in attendance.

Band aids
Here are some facts about Ohio State’smarching band:— It has 225 pieces, including 64 cornets, 20flugelhorns, 28 mellophones, 33 trombones,28 baritone horns, 28 sousaphones, 14 snaredrums, five pairs of cymbals and five of those five-headed tom-toms.— There are 33 alternate musicians, ner-vously waiting for their chance to step in.—Usually, a fourth- or fifth-year sousaphoneplayer “dots the i” in the Script Ohio. Or, if you prefer, provides the “tribble.”
