Find the ratio of speed of cutting stroke to speed of return stroke. (b) Explain the inversions of four bar chain by using Grashoffs rule. A mechanism as shown in figure has the following dimensions. OA = 200 mm; AB = 1.5 mm; BC = 600 mm; CD = 500 mm and BE = 400 mm. Locate all the instantaneous centers. B 3 Derive the equations for the estimation of maximum acceleration and maximum velocity if the rotation of the follower follows simple harmonic motion. Draw the profile of tangent cam with concave flank and explain the terminology and functionality of the cam. A cam is to operate an offset roller follower. The least radius of the cam is 50 mm, roller diameter is 30 mm, and offset is 20 mm. the cam is to rotate at 360 rpm. The angle of ascent is 48 , angle of dwell is 42 , and angle of descent is 60 . The motion is to be SHM during ascent and uniform acceleration and deceleration during descent. Draw the cam profile. Also calculate the maximum velocity and acceleration during descent. Each wheel of a motor cycle is 500 mm diameter and has a moment of inertia of 1.4 kg-m2. The total mass of the motor cycle and the rider is 150 kg and the combined center of the mass is 480 mm above the ground level when the motor cycle is upright. The moment of inertia of the rotating parts of the engine is 0.4 kg-m2. The engine speed is five times the speed of the wheels and is in the same sense. Determine the angle of heel necessary when the motor cycle takes a turn of 20 m radius at a speed of 50 kmph. A mechanism as shown in figures has the following dimensions: O1A= 60 mm; AB = 180 mm; O2B = 100 mm; O2C = 180 mm and CD = 270 mm. The crank O1C = 180 mm and CD = 270 mm. The crank O1A rotates clockwise at a uniform speed of 120 r.p.m. The block D moves in vertical guides. Find by instantaneous centre method, the velocity of D and the angular velocity of CD.

A hollow shaft, 500 mm outside diameter and 300 mm inside diameter, is supported by two bearings 6 m apart. The shaft is driven by a flexible coupling at one end and drives a ships propeller at 100 rev/min. The maximum thrust on the propeller is 500 kN when the shaft is transmitting 6000 kW. The shaft weights 60 kN. Determine the maximum shear stress in the shaft considering the weight of the shaft and the column effect. Assume Kb = 1.5 and Kt =1.0. A pinion A has 15 teeth and is rigidly fixed to a motor shaft. The wheel B has 20 teeth and gears with A and also with the fixed annular wheel D. The pinion C has 15 teeth and is fixed to the wheel B and gears with annular wheel E which is keyed to a machine shaft. B and C can rotate together on a pin carried by an arm, which rotates about the shaft on which A is fixed. If the motor runs at 1000 rpm, find the speed of the machine.

Determine the velocity of the slider if the crank O2A rotates with a speed of 1 rad/sec in a clockwise direction. A crank and rocker mechanism ABCD has the following dimensions: AB = 0.75 m, BC = 1.25 m, CD = 1 m, AD = 1.5 m and CF = 500 mm. AD is the fixed link. F lies on BC produced. Crank AB has an angular velocity of 30 rad/s counter clock-wise and a deceleration of 200 rad/s2 at the instant angle DAB = 300. Find (a) The instantaneous linear acceleration of C and F and (b) The instantaneous angular velocities and accelerations of links BC and CD. An aero plane is flying at 240 kmph turns towards left and completes a quarter circle of 60 m radius. The mass of the rotary engine and the propeller of the plane amounts to 450 kg with a radius of gyration of 320 mm. The engine speed is 2000 rpm clockwise when viewed from the rear determine the gyroscopic couple on the airbus 380 and state its effect. In what way is the effect changed when (i) the airbus turned towards right. (ii) the engine rotates clockwise when viewed from the front (nose end) and the airbus turns (a) left and (b) right. A cam rotating clockwise with a uniform speed is to give the roller follower of 20 mm diameter with the following motion. Follower is to move outwards through a distance of 30 mm during 120 of cam rotation. Follower is to dwell for 60 of cam rotation. Follower to return to its initial position during 90 of cam rotation; and Follower to dwell for the remaining 90 of cam rotation. The minimum radius of the cam is 45 mm and the line of stroke of the follower is offset 15 mm from the axis of the cam and the displacement of the follower is to take place with simple harmonic motion on both the outward and return strokes. Draw the cam profile. Derive the equation for the estimation of maximum velocity and maximum acceleration for circular arc cam with straight flank. (a) Explain the application of couplings. Design the flange coupling by assuming the diameter if shaft is d. (b) Describe fits and tolerances. A compound epicyclic gear is shown diagrammatically in figure. The gears A, D and E are free to rotate on the axis P. The compound gear B and C rotate together on the axis Q at the end of arm F. All the gears D and E annular gears. The gear A rotates at 100 r.p.m. In the anti clockwise direction and the gear D rotates at 450 r.p.m. clockwise. Find the speed and direction of the arm and the gear E. E

(b) Give sketches and brief descriptions of each of the three mechanisms derived from the double crank chain by fixing different links. (a) Explain the Kleins construction by taking four bar mechanism as an example but not slider crank mechanism. (b) Describe the construction of acceleration diagram for slider crank quick return motion mechanism. (a) Explain moving centrode and fixed centrode of a four bar mechanism with a neat sketches. (b) Can we use instantaneous center method for calculating the accelerations of links in a mechanism? If so, justify your answer. Each wheel of a motor cycle is 600 mm diameter and has a moment of inertia of 1.2 kg-m2. The total mass of the motor cycle and the rider is 180 kg and the combined center of the mass is 580 mm above the ground level when the motor cycle is upright. The moment of inertia of the rotating parts of the engine is 0.2 kg-m2. The engine speed is five times the speed of the wheels and is in the same sense. Determine the angle of heel necessary when the motor cycle takes a turn of 35 m radius at a speed of 54 kmph. Draw the profile of a cam operating a knife edged follower from the following data. (i) It lifts the follower through 3.75 cm during its 60 rotation with S.H.M. (ii) The follower remains at rest for next 40 rotation of the cam. (iii) The follower then descents to its original position during 90 rotation of the cam with S.H.M. (iv) The follower remains at rest for the rest of the revolution. The least radius of the cam is 5 cm. If the cam rotates at 300 RPM in counter clockwise direction then find the maximum velocity and acceleration of the follower during ascent and descent. The axis of the follower does not pass through the axis of the cam shaft. Assume off-set is 10 mm from the center of cam axis. (a) Describe the analysis of the tangent cam with roller follower when the roller touching flank. (a) Explain the law of gearing. (b) In an epicyclic train an annular wheel A having 54 teeth meshes with a planet wheel B which gears with a sun wheel C, the wheels A and C are being coaxial. The wheel B is carried on a pin fixed on one end of arm P which rotates about the axis of the wheels A and C. If the wheel A makes 20 rpm in a clock wise direction and the arm P rotates at 100 rpm in the anticlockwise direction and the wheel C has 24 teeth, determine the speed of arm P. Determine the sense of rotations of gears A, B, C and P. (a) Derive the stress, force and deflection relationship for a helical coil spring for a concentric axial load. (b) Explain about multi leaf springs.

Answer any FIVE questions All questions carry equal marks ***** Two points P and Q, 4 cm apart are to be connected by a pantograph. The motion of P to the motion of P Q is 13:7. Find the distance of Q from the fixed point O of the pantograph such that the point P moves at least 12.7 cm in either direction of live O Q P when it is horizontal. Find also the main dimensions of the pantograph. (a) Discuss the three types of instantaneous centers for a mechanism. (b) The stroke of a steam engine is 15 cm and the connecting rod is 30 cm in length. Determine the velocity and acceleration of the piston when the crank has made 45 measured from the inner dead centre and rotates at 600 r.p.m. Also calculate the velocity and acceleration of point P, 5 cm on the connecting rod produced from the junction of the crank. Use instantaneous centre method. A quick return mechanism is shown in figure below; link 2 rotates at 20 rad/S and has a length of 0.15 m. Draw the velocity and acceleration diagram. Determine the magnitude of coriolis component of acceleration.

A cam with 30 mm as minimum diameter is rotating clockwise at a uniform speed of 1200 r.p.m. and has to give the following motion to a roller follower 10 mm in diameter. (a) Follower to complete outward stroke of 25 mm during 120 of cam rotation with equal uniform acceleration and retardation. (b) Follower to dwell for 60 of cam rotation. (c) Follower to return to its initial position during 90 of cam rotation with equal uniform acceleration and retardation. (d) Follower to dwell for the remaining 90 of cam rotation. Draw the cam profile if the axis of the roller follower passes through the axis of the cam. Determine the maximum velocity of the follower during the outstroke and return stroke and also the uniform acceleration of the follower on the outstroke and the return stroke. In an epicyclic train an annular wheel A having 54 teeth meshes with a planet wheel B which gears with a sun wheel C, the wheels A and C are being coaxial. The wheel B is carried on a pin fixed on one end of arm P which rotates about the axis of the wheels A and C. If the wheel A makes 20 rpm in a clockwise direction and the arm P rotates at 100 rpm in the anticlockwise direction and the wheel C has 24 teeth, determine the speed and sense of rotation of arm P. (a) Describe the analysis of the tangent cam with roller follower when the roller touching nose. (b) Describe the analysis of the circular arc cam with flat faced follower when the follower is touching circular flank. (a) Explain the gyroscopic effect of aero plane for the following cases with vector diagrams. (i) By seeing from rear end of aero plane, the plane is taking left turn. (ii) By seeing from rear end of plane, the plane is taking right turn. (b) What is gyroscopic couple? How is it useful for in the application of missiles? Design a 750 mm long simply supported shaft between bearings used to transmit 21 KW power at 100 rpm. Two pulleys are mounted in such a way that they divide the shaft in three equal parts. If the pull in the belt is 10 kN vertically downwards in left pulley and same horizontal pull on the right pulley. Take shear stress = 40 MN/m2, Kb = 1.5, K1 = 1.25.
