The term is loosely defined because its definition is still the subject of debate. 1.5 DEFINITION OF TERMS

PART III METHODOLOGY

3.1 PARTICIPANTS The survey was passed out to completely random students from different schools in Manila so there was no imbalance of the results. The participants are currently studying in the following schools: Ramon Magsaysay High School, Claro M. Recto High School, Victorino Mapa High School, National Teachers University, CCM, and Regardless of the ratio between boys and girls, the population that used in the study is equal to 100%.

3.2 INSTRUMENTS Informations about the topic were gathered from psychology books, magazines and technical sources. The researcher used a twenty items surveys with some questions about gender, age, the awareness about the topic, their present problems and their idea about emo music. Most of the question are answerable by yes or no to have a more precise results. 3.3 DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE Tallies were made for each item of the questionnaire. Then, results were were converted to percentage and shown in table.

4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION

As shown in table 1, Emo music got the highest score which implies that most of the students are aware the topic and fond of listening to Emo music. Though the participants are facing major problems as shown in Table 2, Table 3 shows that 70 percent of the participants don't chose to commit suicide to escape their problem. Take note that 45% (the highest mark) of the participants are listening to Emo music. Referring to the given data, participants don't allow any minor thing like emo music to interfere in their life. Emo music simply makes its listener feel better in times of depression. According to the survey, 65% of the participants prefer to listen to Emo music when they're depressed and 55% of them said that emo music helps them in solving their problem. This can only mean that the problematic listeners can adopt to the music because they already experienced that kind of conflict. It seems that they are using emo music as an outlet to release the negative mood inside of them. 90% of the panel believe that God do exists and 55% of them said that Emo music are good in general. conservative countries like the Philippines do agree that emo is not that bad and requires listener's critical thinking. 5. Emo Study There are two popular forms of dress associated with emo. The first is basically what came out of the 90s Indies emo scene, and has connections to Indies rock. It includes more vintage and thrift store clothing, typically for a well-worn look. Some of the clothing leans toward khaki colors. T-shirts are typically of smaller sizes and with random prints, often images from the 1980s.

The other popular style of dress focuses on darker colors. Commonly seen elements include dark colored hair (often dyed either black or an unnatural dark hue), males wearing pants tailored for females, lip, eyebrow and libretos piercings, and dark make-up on males and females (most notably black eyeliner).

Converse All-Star style shoes are common amongst both styles of dress.

Though the original emo scenes were not exclusionary, the modern emo scene has developed into a gay friendly scene. Though its unclear whether its related to the diminished macho elements of emo music or the gay friendly nature of the scene, it has become commonplace for detractors to use emo in combination with popular gay slurs, such as emo fag.

While use of the term emo to describe the dress and attitudes of some fans of emo music, it should be noted that use of emo as a musical genre and emo as a slang term are largely separate. Emo as a musical genre long pre-dated the use of emo as a slang term, while most modern bands labeled emo are done so unwillingly, and largely because the share some of the fashion trends

There is also a common stereotype that associates self harm with emo, though there is no evidence of any correlation between the two. The link may stem from the association of negative emotions with the emo subculture.

The term emo has also been used in recent years on the Internet as a form of insult, especially towards those who appear emotionally unstable on line, or those who rant about issues in their lives to people in public forums or chat rooms. Phrases such as dont cry emo kid are used frequently as a quick brush-off of somebody they deem as an emo kid, or even just in passing if somebody seems disgruntled thus the term emo is very loose, and is usually applied very liberally to different situations. Development of emo In my article several months ago, "The nihilism and self-destructiveness of Generation X," I quoted the lyrics of several Gen-X popular songs, and contrasted them with the music of previous decades -- the romantic escapist music of the Great Depression and World War II eras, the sweet "live, love, laugh and be happy" post-war love ballads, and the protest music of the Awakening era Boomers. As Gen-X music took hold in the late 1970s and 1980s, the protest music morphed into counterculture "punk rock" music, with dark lyrics mostly rejecting Boomer values, and often emphasizing themes of violence, isolation,

disillusionment and death. This was especially apparent in the sub-genre death rock. Emo, which originally stood for "emotive hardcore," began in the 1980s as a punk rock sub-genre that stressed emotions and rejected violence. As it's grown, it's adopted the same punk rock themes of isolation, disillusionment and death, but in punk those themes are turned outward in the form of violence, while in emo they're turned inward. Emo Fans March on London's 'Daily Mail' The Bryant Park Project, May 30, 2008 - On Saturday, fans of emo the shortened term for "emotional hardcore," a sort of Goth-influenced rock will march from London's Hyde Park to the offices of the Daily Mail. The fans say the newspaper has been unfairly attacking emo music, which it refers to as a "suicide cult." The protest is once raising the age-old debate over the impact of art, in this case a form of music, on life in this case a form of humans known as teenagers. Last year a teenager in Kent, England, hanged herself from her bunk bed. Her parents said emo music may have played a big role in her suicide. According to her mother, the 13-year-old started listening to an emo band, My Chemical Romance, two weeks before to her death. That's when the newspaper likened the music and its listeners to a suicide cult, prompting the fans to speak out. "The people who listen are very intelligent," says James McMahon of the British music magazine NME, "and they're just sick of being misrepresented."

McMahon thinks fans have a strong case against the Daily Mail, pointing out that rock has traditionally addressed depression and dark themes and that people have been committing suicide long before My Chemical Romance.
