LAS VEGAS – After two years andmore than 400,000 miles of globalcompetition, reigning ProfessionalBowlers Association Player of theYear Sean Rash of Montgomery, Ill.,along with PBA Tour titlist KellyKulick of Union, N.J., have won theWorld Bowling Tour Finals. Rash, a seven-time PBA Tour titlewinner, defeated Mike Fagan of FortWorth, Texas, 255-231, to win theWBT Men’s Finals presented by thePBA during the PBA World Series of Bowling V, hosted by South PointHotel, Casino and Spa, while Kulick, the 2010 PBA Tournament of Champions winner, raced away fromdefending champion Missy Parkin of Laguna Hills, Calif., 267-194, to winthe WBT Women’s Finals. Both events aired on ESPN.Rash, who entered the WBT event as the leader in atwo-year rolling points competition involving a seriesof WTBA/PBA International Tour tournaments heldaround the world, started his match against Faganwith seven strikes and was never challenged.Fagan had been nearly perfect himself in eliminat-ing Finland’s Mika Koivuniemi, 279-223, in the firstmatch. Koivuniemi, who won the 2011 WBT Men’sFinals and finished second in 2012, is the only play-er to make the series finals in all three years the com- petition has been held.“Anytime you have a chance to compete, whether it’s in the U.S. or around the world, it’s fun,” Rashsaid. “That’s why you’re an athlete. You love to com- pete. “I came into this event with a different mindset,” headded. “The World Series wasn’t as great as I wouldhave liked, but it wasn’t terrible. I feel great. I’ve been bowling well for the past few months. My lifehas changed since the arrival of our new baby. I’m ina happy place.“You have to take advantage of opportunities,” Rashcontinued. “Mike got a little lost on the left lane andthat’s why I had him finish there. I kinda figured the firstmistake would come on that lane and that’s what hap- pened.“It’s always good to win. It doesn’t matter; it could be league. I like to win.”In the all-U.S. women’s preliminary match, Parkinheld off Liz Johnson of Cheektowaga, N.Y., 198-195, but was no match for Kulick, who struck on everyshot except for leaving a 10 pin (which she missed)in the eighth frame.“The question I’ve been asking myself is ‘Am I stillgood enough to be out here? Should I keep doingthis?’” Kulick said. “The WBT event was just reas-surance of my confidence level and my ability as a player. I came out to prove something to nobodyexcept myself today. It was just sheer determinationto beat whomever I had to face. It’s almost a relief knowing I won again.”

FAIR LAWN, NJ - In an anchor player faceoff againstreigning North Jersey High School Bowler of the Year JakeRollins, Montville junior Karl Kattermann remained in ahot zone firing a blazing 254-206-259-719 to Jake’s 204-258-225-687. Karl’s huge effort helped Boonton storm toa three game triumph over Fair Lawn with a 3011 handicapscore, third best to date in the Stan Niemiec Youth TravelLeague. Montville freshman Erik Kattermann, buoyed byhis sibling’s thunder, blasted 257-613 to go with SeanMcGuire’s 212 and Randy Devitt’s 182 in Boonton’s win.First place Holiday burst from the gate with a blistering814 net to take game one from Montvale and scored wellthroughout the match, led by former Ramapo H.S. star Kevin Macchio’s 236-234-651, Ana DeLeon 197-192, LillySigona 191-193 and Frank Magyar 190. Undaunted,Montvale charged back with a pinfall battering of their own, riddling the maples with handicap games of 1022-1097 to come away with five points. After barely missingthe 4-7 to start game two, Montvale’s anchor Matt Russellstrung together ten strikes, closing with a nine-count for 278, tying the afternoon’s best single. Sandwiching thewhopper with 192-190, Matt finished with 660, the ses-sion’s third best threesome. Park Ridge senior KyleLadewig enjoyed one of his finest outings, spilling the pinswith 215: 566. Dan Sproviero closed with 178 and eleven-year-old Michaella Raab posted a remarkable 81 pins over average 193, beating her anchor by three pins, you can besure he caught an earful about that from Michaella. In other play, Passaic Tech sophomore Anthony Rizzosmashed a 227-225-645, JonMikal Sepero 221, Welmer Paguay 204-197 and Kristen Kane 192 as Bowler City Igrabbed a closely contested match from Bowler City III,2931-2877. The latter captured the high-scoring opener 1055-1007, largely due to Nick Reyes’ 278, but droppedgames two and three despite fine scores from Greg Khan posting 204-226, Alijah Jackson 200-211 and TiffanySucero 174. They say turnabout is fair, and Bowler City II took it toheart, reversing last week’s sweep and beating Lodi 2840-2653. Lodi, short one bowler, remained competitive, drop- ping the finale by a scant two pins. Their highs were: Nick Ferrante 201, Chris Navarro 181 and Mariah McKelvey155. Pacing BC II were Joseph Biondi 226, Ryan Sweeney214, Kelley Grippo 191 and George Held 190.
