GOOD TURN:-
IT IS TRUELY SAID THAT CHARITY BEGINS AT HOME. WE SHOULD BE ABLE TO HELP
OUR ELDERS, BROTHERS & SISTERS IN WHATEVER RELIEF TO THEM. OUR AIM IS TO
FORM A HABBIT OF BEING HELPFUL TO OTHERS. A SCOUT HAS TO KEEP A DIARY &
HAS TO SHOW THAT TO THEIR SCOUT MASTERS. A GOOD TURN KNOT AT THE END OF
SCARF REMINDS US OF DOING GOOD TURN EVERYDAY.

THE WORLD SCOUT FLAG CONSISTS OF THE WORLD SCOUT BADGE IN WHITE
ENRICHED BY A WHITE CARD, THE ENDS OF WHICH ARE TIED WITH A REAF KNOT.
THE CLOTH OF THE FLAG IS PURPLE WHICH STANDS FOR THE SERVICE ORIENTED
NATURE OF SCOUTING.THE REAF KNOT INDICATES WORLD BROTHERHOOD. THE
THREE PETALS SHOW THE THREE PARTS OF THE PROMISES & THE SHAPE DENOTES
THE RIGHT DIRECTION ON THE COMPASS. THIS FLAG WAS ADOPTED IN THE WORLD
CONFERENCE IN 1951 AT LISBON….

OUR NATIONAL FLAG WAS FIRST EVOLVED BY MADAM CAMA IN 1905 AND ANNIE
BESANT, BAL GANGADHAR & MANY OTHERS CONTRIBUTED TO ITS EVOLUTION. THE
PRESENT TRICOLOUR WAS ADOPTED BY OUR NATION ON JULY 22, 1947. IT WAS FIRST
FLOWN ON 15 AUGUST 1947 I.E. OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY.
THE NATIONAL TRICOLOUR IS RECTANGULAR IN SHAPE & HAS SIDES OF RATIO 3: 2.
THERE ARE 3 COLOURED BANDS OF EQUAL WIDTH.

3) DUTY TO SELF.

LIFE HISTORY OF BADEN POWELL --
BADEN POWELL WAS BORN ON 22/FEB/1857.HIS FULLNAME WAS ROBERT STEPHENSON BADEN
POWELL. HIS MOTHER’S NAME WAS HENRETTA GRACE SMITH. HIS FATHER’S NAME WAS HARBERT
GEORGE BADEN POWELL.
AT THE AGE OF 19 IN 1876, BADEN POWELL GRADUATED FROM CHARACTER HOUSE & APPEARED FOR
THE ARMY SELECTION EXAMINATION IN 1883. AT THE AGE OF 26, HE BECAME A CAPTAIN. AT THE AGE
OF 43, HE BECAME THE YOUNGEST MAJOR-GENERAL IN THE WORLD. IN 1909, HE WROTE A BOOK
NAMELY “AIDS TO SCOUTING”. THE FIRST IDEA OF SCOUTING CAME INTO THE MIND OF BADEN POWELL
IN 1899.
THE FIRST CAMP WAS HELD AT BROWN SEA ISLAND FROM 31/JULY – 9/AUGUST 1907 IN WHICH 20
SCOUTS PARTICIPATED. CRYSTAL PALACE RALLY WAS HELD ON 4/SEPTEMBER/1909 IN WHICH 1100
SCOUTS PARTICIPATED.
FIRST GUIDE COMPANY WAS STARTED IN 1910 BY AGNES BADEN POWELL – SISTER OF LORD BADEN
POWELL. IN 1912 POWELL MET OLAVE & THEY BOTH GOT MARRIED WITH EACH OTHER. OLAVE SOON
BECAME ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN SCOUT & GUIDE MOVEMENT. THE IDEA OF THINKING DAY 22FEB WAS
INITATED IN 1926 TO CELEBRATE JOINT BIRTHDAYS OF THE WORLD CHIEF GUIDE & FOUNDER.
BADEN POWELL DIED ON 8/JANUARY/1941. THE WORLD CHIEF GUIDE DIED IN 1977. HER ASHES WERE
BURIED ALONG WITH HER HUSBAND IN NYERI (KENYA)…….
SALUTE –
THE SCOUT SALUTE IS GENERALLY DONE BY RAISING THE RIGHT ARM SMARTLY TO THE LEVEL OF THE
SHOULDER, PALM TO THE FRONT WITH THE THREE FINGERS STRECHED TOGETHER, THE FRONT
TOUCHING THE FOREHEAD & THE THUMB CLOSING ON THE LITTLE FINGER. AFTER THE SALUTE THE
ARM IS SMARTLY BROUGHT DOWN.
THE ARM GOES UP BY THE SIDE & COMES DOWN BY THE COUNT OF 4 {1=ARM UP, 2—3=SALUTE &
4=ARM DOWN}. IF A SKICK OR THUMB SKICK IS CARRIED, IT MUST BE PASSED TO THE LEFT HAND OR
KEPT UNDER THE LEFT ARM PIT. WHEN A STAFF IS CARRIED THE SALUTE IS GIVEN WITH THE LEFT
FOREARM BENT AT RIGHT ANGLE AT THE ELBOW WITH THREE FINGERS OPEN. THE THUMB CLOSES THE
LITTLE FINGER PALM DOWNWARDS. THE FIRST FINGER TOUCHES THE STAFF. WHEN THE HANDS ARE
OCCUPIED THE SALUTE IS GIVEN BY MOVING THE EYES RIGHT OR LEFT AS THE CASE MAY BE……

ACTIVITY. THEY CAN DEMONSTRATE THEIR PROJECT OR WORK. THEY MAY EVEN DECORATE THE
CORNER IN A SCOUT WAY WITH GADGETS, CHARTS, COLLECTIONS, DECORATIVE HANDMADE PIECES

FORM A HABIT OF CLEANLINESS. TO BRUSH THE TEETH AND MOUTH EVERY MORNING & AFTER MEALS
ETC, ARE GOLDEN RULES OF CLEANLINESS……
2). MEALS - ALL OUR MEALS SHOULD BE SIMPLE & BALANCED. OUR RECIPE SHOULD INCLUDE GREEN
VEGETABLES, MILK, SEASONAL FRUIT, CEREALS ETC. IT SHOULD CONTAIN ALL IMPORTANT ELEMENTS
SUCH AS PROTEIN, FAT, CARBOHYDRATES, VITAMINS & MINERALS, SALTS ETC IN A BALANCED
MANNER. BALANCED DIET PROVIDES US VITALITY. DRINKING WATER SHOULD BE CLEAN & FREE FROM
GERMS. AT THE CAMPS WE SHOULD BE MORE CAREFUL IN PREPARING OR TAKING FOOD, WATER, MILK
ETC…..
3). CLEAN AIR - WE CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT AIR EVEN FOR FEW MINUTES. THIS AIR IS GIVEN TO US BY
GOD WITHOUT ANY CHANGE. BUT MODERN EQUIPMENTS, VEHICLES & OUR PROGRESSIVE INVENTIONS
HAVE POLLUTED THE AIR. THE POLLUTED AIR CONTAINS LESS OF OXYGEN & MORE OF HARMFUL
GASES. THE DESTRUCTION OF GREENERY & FORESTS HAS ALSO INCREASED POLLUTION. NOW IT IS OUR
DUTY TO PLANT AND GROW MORE TREES & SAVE OUR ENVIRONMENT…..

4). REST & SLEEP – EVERY HUMAN BEING REQUIRES REST & SLEEP FOR A DEFINITE PERIOD. IT HELPS
US TO REGAIN STRENGTH & FRESHNESS. WE SHOULD TAKE REST & SLEEP FOR SUFFICIENT PERIOD. IT
IS SAID “EARLY TO BED, EARLY TO RISE. THAT IS THE BEST WAY TO BE HEALTHY, WEALTHY & WISE.”
EARLY RISING & TO START IMPORTANT WORK WITH FRESH MIND HAS ITS OWN REWARD; ONE SHOULD
WORK HARD, IF HE WANTS TO GET A DEEP SLEEP. WE SHOULD ALSO REMEMBER THAT CHANGE OF
WORK IS ALSO REST. AFTER LONG TIME OF STUDIES; PLAYING GAMES OR A WALK WILL MAKE YOU
FRESH. IT IS TRULY SAID THAT “HARD WORK HAS NO ALTERNATIVE”……..
5). EXERCISE – PHYSICAL EXERCISE HAS ITS OWN PLACE IN EVERY HUMAN BEING. EVEN ANIMALS &
BIRDS ALSO DO SUFFICIENT EXERCISE TO KEEP THEM HEALTHY. MODERN AMENITIES & FACILITIES
HAVE MADE US TO WORK LESS & GET MORE REST BUT STILL IT IS A FACT THAT MANY DISEASES OF
TODAY ARE A DIRECT RESULT OF LESS PHYSICAL EXERCISE. IT SHOULD BE A HABIT FOR EVERY PERSON
TO DO SOME PHYSICAL EXERCISES FOR AT LEAST HALF AN HOUR AT SUNSET & SUNRISE.
LEARN SUCH EXERCISES FROM YOUR SM / GC OR PHE TEACHERS & EVEN SOME TV PROGRAMME.

BP `S SIX -- DO THESE EXERCISES EVERY DAY IN THE EARLY MORNING OR EVENING WITH FEW OR
LOOSE CLOTHINGS. DO THEM RIGHTLY. THESE ARE DONE IN FOLLOWING ORDER –
1). MASSAGE – RUB HANDS, HEAD, FACE, NECK, CHEST, BACK, LEGS WITH YOUR PALMS & FINGERS
VIGOURSLY.
2). FOR CHEST – STAND STRAIGHT, BEND FORWARD, ARMS STRAIGHT IN FRONT WITH THEIR BACKS
TOUCHING. BREATHE OUT, RAISE HANDS & STRAIGHTEN YOUR BODY. WHILE OPENING YOUR HANDS,
EXPAND YOUR CHEST BY BREATHING IN. LOWER YOUR ARMS GENTLY AT THE BACK, BREATHE OUT WITH
THE WORD ‘THANKS’. DO IT 12 TIMES. DEEP BREATHING & GENTLE STEADY IS IMPORTANT IN THIS
EXERCISE.
3). FOR STOMACH – STAND UPRIGHT, HANDS IN FRONT, PALMS DOWNWARDS TWIST FROM HIPS
TOWARDS LEFT & RIGHT. BREATHE IN WHEN YOU REACH RIGHT & BREATHE OUT AS YOU REACH THE
LEFT. DO THIS A DOZEN TIMES.
4).THE CONE EXERCISE FOR THE TRUNK – CLASP YOUR HANDS OVER YOUR HEAD. LEAN AS FAR AS
POSSIBLE, ROTATE HIPS TURNING TOWARDS LEFT, IN FRONT, TO THE RIGHT & BACK AGAIN. BREATHE
OUT WHEN YOU LEAN BACK. DO THIS SIX TIMES FROM LEFT TO RIGHT & SIX TIMES RIGHT TO LEFT.
5). FOR LOWER BODY, BACK & LEGS – PLACE YOUR HAND BEHIND YOUR HEAD, BEND BACK &
BREATHE IN. RAISE YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD, BREATHE OUT SLOWLY AS YOU BEND FORWARD
TILL YOU TOUCH THE TOES. KEEP YOUR KNEES STIFF. BE UPRIGHT SLOWLY AGAIN BREATHING IN &
BRING HANDS BEHIND THE NECK. DO IT TWELVE TIMES.
6). FOR LEGS, FEET & TOES – PUT YOUR HANDS ON YOUR HIPS. STAND ON TIPS OF YOUR TOES &
BEND YOUR KNEES SLOWLY TAKING A SIT ON YOUR HEELS. KEEP THE TRUNK UPRIGHT. THEN

6. USES OF KNOTS
THE BEGINNERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO TIE THE FOLLOWING KNOTS AS PER THEIR USES:
A). REEF KNOT: USED FOR TYING THE TWO ENDS OF A ROPE, TYING BANDAGES &
PARCELS.
B). SHEET BAND: USED FOR JOINING TWO ROPES, TYING A ROPE TO THE END OF A SHEET.
C). CLOVE HITCH: USED FOR TYING A ROPE TO A POLE OR A SPAR. IT IS USED IN
PIONEERING AS IT IS AN IMPORTANT KNOT.
D). SHEEP SHANK: USED FOR SHORTENING A ROPE WITHOUT CUTTING. IT ALSO TAKES
OFF THE STRAIN FROM A WEAK END PORTION OF THE ROPE.
E). BOW LINE : IT IS AN IMPORTANT KNOT USED FOR LIFE SAVING BY MAKING A
LIFE LINE AT THE END OF THE ROPE. MAKE THE CORRECT LOOP AT THE END
WITHOUT ANY MISTAKE.
F). FISHERMAN’S KNOT: USED FOR JOINING TWO STIFF OR WET ROPES. IT ALSO FORMS A
LOOP TO LIFT A POT OR LOTAH.

KNOW THE CONTENTS OF A FIRST AID BOX & BE ABLE TO RENDER FIRST AID FOR CUTS,
SCRATCHES, BURNS, SCALDS, BLEEDING FROM NOSE, STRINGS & SPRAINS –
A GOOD FIRST AIDER SHOULD BE QUICK AND CORRECT IN TAKING DECISIONS. SCOUTS & GUIDES ARE
KNOWN FOR THE SERVICES IN SAVING LIFE & GIVING COMFORT. THE PRIORITIES IN FIRST AID ARE –
EACH MATERIAL SHOULD BE PACKED SEPARATELY & ARRANGED IN A WOODEN OR METAL BOX. APPLY
FIRST AID AS FOLLOWS –

A) CUTS & SCRATCHES – FOR MINOR WOUNDS SUCH AS CUTS & SCRATCHES,
CLEAN THE CUT WITH ANTISEPTIC LIQUID OR PURE WATER & APPLY A BANDAID.
REMEMBER:
1) THE FIRST AIDER MUST WASH HIS HANDS BEFORE TOUCHING ANY DRESSING MATERIAL.
2) CLEAN THE WOUND BEFORE APPLYING DILUTE ANTISEPTIC LIQUID. CLEAN IT FROM OUTSKIRT FIRST
& THEN FROM INSIDE TO OUTSIDE.
3) IF STILL THERE IS BLEEDING, A PIECE OF STERLIZED GAUGE SHOULD BE PRESSED ON THE WOUND
FOR 10 MINUTES & LIFT THAT PART OF THE BODY.
4) SOFRAMYCIN CREAM SHOULD ALSO BE APPLIED. COVER IT WITH THE GAUGE & APPLY A LIGHT
BANDAID...
D) STINGS –
I) FOR STINGS OF AN INSECT LIKE A BEE - REMOVE THE STING WITH YOUR FINGER NAIL
AND APPLY ICE-PACK TO RELIEVE PAIN.
II) IN CASE OF SNAKE BITE – TWO FANG MARKS ARE EASILY SEEN IMMEDIATELY AFTER THE BITE.
WIPE OFF ANY VENOM OVER THE BITE. REMOVE THE BROKEN FANGS.

LET THE CASALITY LIE DOWN. TIE A CONSTRICTION BANDAGE ABOVE THE BITE.
IMMOBILISE THE LIMB SO THAT VENOM DOESN’T SPREAD FAST.
USE CRYOTHERAPY I.E. TAKE CRUSHED ICE & MAKE A COLLAR OF ICE AROUND THE
BITE.
TAKE THE PATIENT TO THE NEAREST HOSPITAL IMMEDIATELY.
III) IN CASE OF ANIMAL BITE – TREAT THE WOUND AS ORDINARY WOUND. CLEAN THE WOUND &
WIPE-OFF THE SALIVA. CONSULT THE DOCTOR FOR FURTHER TREATMENT.
E). SPRAINS – IT IS CAUSED DUE TO A JERK OR STRECHING OR TEARING AROUND THE JOINT. MANY
TIMES IT IS DIFFICULT TO MAKE OUT BETWEEN A SPRAIN AND A FRACTURE. IF THE ANKLE IS SPRAINED,
PUT COLD COMPRESS OR ICE PACK OVER THE PART FOR 30 MINUTES. THEN APPLY A TIGHT ELASTIC
CRAPE BANDAGE. DO NOT MASSAGE OR RUB THE AFFECTED PART…….

MEET BY PATROL AS PER THE INSTRUCTIONS OF THE PATROL LEADER. THE PLACE SHOULD BE OUT UF
