An accident early Monday, Jan. 20 saw a nine-year-old boy struck by a southbound truck while on his way to school. The child, Ricky, was already in the crosswalk on Westchester Road when the accident happened. I dont believe excessive speed was a factor, I think there was a combination of poor road conditions, her windshield being obscured and maybe just not taking the time to think and realize where she was, and the time of day, and that theres kids walking all around that area all the time, said Const. Tyler Grifths with the Strathmore RCMP. The driver, a woman in her early 20s, was charged with failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. Ken Hitch, who lives down the road, witnessed the accident. It was kind of a shocker. I was sitting in my truck in front of the house waiting for my teenager to come out. I watched him walk by and cross the road and cross the next one and then boom he went ying (down the ice) about 10 feet. I put it (the truck) in drive and ew down the street, said Hitch. Ricky was hit on the left side of his body. He was fortunate in that he sustained only minor injuries, some bruising and scrapes. He was released from the hospital later that same day. The doctor said Ricky was very lucky to have not broken anything. Since the accident, crosswalk signs have been put up, but Stuart Bruer, Rickys dad, isnt sure that would have really made a difference. I wish she had of been paying attention. Shes lucky and were lucky. I think I am more lucky than she is because it is my son, said Bruer. He is upset that there isnt a sidewalk there for the kids to walk along and would like to see the times change for the school zone. He would also like to see people not park so close to the crosswalks since the cars also block the view of the kids from other drivers, and because it cuts down the space the kids are able to walk on. One thing he is grateful for - other than the fact his son is home safe and sound even if he is a little sore - is the fact that there are a lot of good people in town and at Westmount School. Weve got a lot of good people, from the school to the bus driver that ran out with a blanket for my mom and Ricky, said Bruer. Continued on Page 2

Learning about career choices

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter There is a world full of choices when it comes to picking a career. Some people know right away what they want to do with their lives, while others never quite gure it out. Junior Achievement of Southern Alberta is bringing a World of Choices Forum to Strathmore on March 6 for students in Grades 10-12 in hopes of helping them with their decision. It will give them the opportunity to ask one-on-one questions and nd out information from professionals or individuals that already work in a particular career that they are interested in, said Wendy Gerbrandt, SE Prairie Regional program coordinator. The forum will also give the students a chance to explore career options they may not have known existed, or would never have considered. The program has run out of Lethbridge for 14 years and this is the rst time it will be in Strathmore. Students interested in participating need to pre-register by Feb. 4 and can do so by going to by contacting wgerbrandt@jasouthalberta.org, or by going to http://www. eventbrite.ca/e/world-ofchoices-career-forum-tickets9908348136?aff=es2. There is no cost for the forum. In addition to students registering, there is also a need for mentors to speak to them. There will be ve round table discussions with about seven students at each table. Gerbrandt is looking for trades people and business professionals like those involved in health and wellness, whether its for animals or people, engineers, doctors, dentists and so on. She does have enough volunteers for the nancial section. The RCMP and the military also already have representatives who will be volunteering to speak to the kids. Gerbrandt would also like to see some mentors come in who are in non-traditional roles, like male nurses or female mechanics who can help show the kids that they really can do anything they want to do. Gerbrandt needs 20 to 40 mentors; she currently has 13 conrmed. The registration deadline for anyone wishing to mentor is Feb. 10. Contact Wendy Gerbrandt at wgerbrandt@jasouthalberta.org. for more information.

It is nice to see that there were people there thinking and wanting to help. He wanted to thank all of the people that stopped and made a difference Monday morning. Its important to always remember there could be kids crossing the road any time, especially near schools and playgrounds. Always watch your speed and keep that in mind. Snow and more to go

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor County snow removal crews, along with their urban counterparts, are trying to nd ways to keep up with steady snowfalls. There is a lot of snow and drifts out there, said Transportation and Infrastructure Manager Dave Churchill. Ridges are starting to get quite large and there are some concerns about fence breakage. Churchill stated they had one plow truck down for repair and residents were calling for snow removal schedules. Churchill claried if the dozers are pushing snow against fences and there is breakage, the fences will be repaired as soon as possible, after the snow melts. However, normal snow removal along the roads will not be considered county responsibility as some landowners have fences built too close to roadways. Councillor Ben Armstrong commented that residents should be aware that crews area trying to remove snow as far as possible off roadways, so that subsequent snow won`t build up and create blockages and delays. There had been some complaints that driveway accesses had been blocked. Churchill said that complaints would be investigated and they may have to look at each situation individually. The guidelines for county snow removal are outlined on the website and $36.00+ tax independent contractors numbers are posted there if people need help removing snow from their property roadways.

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Albertas Promise has ve simple statements that will give individuals, businesses, agencies, corporations and governments the ability to change the future. We believe that we have a collective responsibility to do more... and better, for the next generation and that the opportunities we give children today will shape their success and our collective economic and social well-being tomorrow. It will make a huge impact on the future of Alberta, said Cheryl Dalwood, Director of Albertas Promise, in Wheatland County council chambers on Jan 7. Children are our greatest resource and we believe we need to pull together for their well-being. Albertas Promise is asking people to commit to: giving children a healthy start; being caring adults; providing children and youth with safe, friendly communities; developing opportunities for children to access lifelong learning; and supplying opportunities for them to contribute. How those promises are kept is not mandated by the agency, and the fun part for individuals making the commitment is seeing how simple acts create amazing opportunities. No money contribution is necessarily involved. The bonuses are the well-being felt by being part of something positive. For organizations, Dalwood said contributing to child initiatives can validate the organizations vision and goal statements. Being a partner in Albertas Promise also presents many networking opportunities and may be an easy and targeted

way to distribute corporate giving initiatives. This is an opportunity to share amazing work throughout the province and champion work involved with children, said Dalwood. You may already be doing this, so you are just making a public statement that you are behind this. When someone accepts the promise, their contact information is taken and organizers place them in a database. When needs arise, or opportunities present themselves, appropriate contacts can be approached and connections are made. Those who commit also get free web exposure, as they become partners of Alberta Promise. The website also showcases exciting initiatives for children and posts informative workshops. The concept was fashioned after Americas Promise which was championed by Colin Powell, a former United States General and presidential consultant. It is also supported by the Premier of Alberta, who appointed 84 members to the Alberta Premiers Council. Those appointees work closely with partners to network and arrange opportunities for child based initiatives. Alberta is the only province to preserve childrens rights through legislation; the legislation was enacted in 2003. There are over 1,600 partnerships province-wide. Some of the Wheatland County partners are Rockinghorse Oil and Gas Ltd, Toddle Inn Day Care, Byron Smith Ford, and the Community Crisis Shelter. Wildrose AGM looking for new faces

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor The local constituency for the Wildrose Alliance Party held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Jan. 8 at the Travelodge in Strathmore. The AGM was good. We didnt have a great turnout, but not bad for January in a time when most people go away, said Constituency President Glen Freeland. Elections for ofcers were completed with three new people lling the secretary, fund raising and communications ofcer roles. Freeland said they are looking to get a bit more participation from the Brooks-area and was pleased that there are two Brooks area people on the board. He also said the executive are looking for more board members overall. The board meets every third Wednesday of the month and meetings rotate throughout the district. The next meeting is in Brooks. We, as the executive, have the ability to recruit new board members so I am always looking, said Freeland. I look at individuals that have the ability to offer something to the board, someone who can think outside the box. They dont have to have a strong political background, that isnt necessary, but they have to be a supporter of the Wildrose party and a member in good standing. Due to a public perception backlash in the last election, the party is taking a closer look at candidate views and generally not considering those with extreme views for leadership roles. Freeland said this is particularly true on the provincial level. However, the constituency does support diversity and age is no barrier. Freeland said they have one board member who is 20-years-old. I look for someone who is a good level-headed, strong, solid individual that can communicate, look at new ideas and bring something to the table that helps to speak to individuals in the community. We want to make our community a better place for our constituents, said Freeland. We want to have a strong voice for our constituency at the board level, so we can take that to our government ofcials. The provincial party has started looking for candidates that might be suitable for the next election. You have to be cognisant that it is coming up in the spring of 2016, and time goes by so quick. You have to make sure you are always in that election mode, said Freeland. Freeland said it is not just the Wildrose Party gearing up, and he will be interested to see who other parties put forward to challenge Jason Hale, our elected MLA. Freeland said public feedback shows area residents are pleased with Hales track record so far. Hale had a chance to update people on his current work in the legislature eld questions from members. The questions that were coming in of course we look at each area within the constituency, so we have Strathmore, Bassano, and Brooks. It is amazing the difference of priorities that we are seeing, said Freeland. For this area, healthcare issues, seniors healthcare and the closing of the extended care were again brought up. Everyone was positive about retaining WADEMSA under a local contract. Freeland said there was also discussion on the current governments spending policies. Given the mindset that our current government has, it is normally not that open to discussion. Once they make up their mind whether they are right, wrong or indifferent and often they are wrong, they are not open to change. So this is why we like people to get involved, said Freeland. If citizens do get together and have a united strong voice on something that is most denitely an injustice that is where we see the possibility of change, and weve denitely shown that the process works. Freeland was disappointed in the last election that people stuck with the devil they knew. He thinks that many will be rethinking their vote in 2016, and they will consider that the Wildrose Alliance has some solid solutions for current problems. We are extremely fortunate in this province, and if things are budgeted properly, we can have adequate healthcare, education and social services. It comes down to allocating properly and budgeting properly, said Freeland. Anyone interested in serving on the board can contact the constituency ofce or email the website, and the new updates on Wildrose Alliance policies can be found through the Party website at www.wildrose.ca.

Standing up for Canadas energy sector

KEVIN SORENsON, M.P., CROWfOOT Parliamentary Report According to the International Energy Agency, in 2035, fossil fuels will still be required to meet three-quarters of global energy demand. Canada is the worlds fth-largest producer of natural gas, with marketable gas resources estimated to be up to 37 trillion cubic metres, or 1,300 trillion cubic feet some 200 years of production at current rates. Canada has the third-largest proven oil reserves in the world, at 173 billion barrels. Canadas Natural Resources Minister, the Honourable Joe Oliver maintains, with our abundance of natural resources, Canada is well positioned to play a leading role in supplying the energy required to meet growing demand. Canadas enormous natural wealth and the strength of our natural resource sectors are essential to our current and future economic success. Our Conservative governments plan for Responsible Resource Development is unleashing the full potential of our resource sectors to create quality jobs, expand into new markets abroad and help grow our economy, while strengthening safety and environmental protection. Already, natural resources account for nearly 20 per cent of our economy and support 1.8 million jobs across our country. Responsible Resource Development is helping ensure that these jobs exist for today and generations to come. For example, on Dec. 19, nearly four years after the Enbridge Northern Gateway Project was submitted for review, the independent Joint Review Panel released its nal report on the project. The independent panel recommends approval of the project subject to 209 conditions. During the independent review process, the panel heard from over 1,450 participants in 21 different communities, reviewed over 175,000 pages of evidence, and received 9,000 letters of comment. Our government is thoroughly reviewing the report and consulting with affected First Nations before making a decision. We are continuing to take action to improve the transportation safety of energy products across Canada. No project will be approved unless it is safe for Canadians and safe for the environment. This is why we believe pipelines are an important alternative to moving our energy by rail. Canadians support our government making signicant infrastructure investments across the country. Programs like the Community Infrastructure Fund, the Building Canada Fund and the Green Infrastructure Fund, are helping to create hundreds of thousands of jobs. Natural resources currently generate over $30 billion in tax revenue and royalties annually to help fund critical national programs, including social-spending programs such as health care and education. Goodbye Wreckers
PAT FULE Fule for Thought Well, in my little world of teaching English and PE at Strathmore High, the Finals Week is here. This also means we say goodbye to the rst semester classes, and get ready for all new classes and students. This is always an interesting week, as we mark exams, clean rooms, and prepare materials for the new students who will eagerly be thirsting for more knowledge. And if you believe that, I really do have some ocean front property in Arizona to sell you! Since it is goodbye time, its also time to reminisce about my Recreation PE 20/30 class. You remember, this is the class that holds all the students who really dont like PE or any form of physical movement. However, I have to admit we bonded, and this PE class became one of my daily highlights which also shows you a lot about my career choice! Yes, this was the class with the greatest collection of characters assembled in one gymnasium. There was Johnny Danger, a husky hockey player, who had a unique friendship with my native students. They would harass each other, and still go out for lunches every noon hour. One student on the second last day, pretended to want to jump off our gym balcony. I know, I know, this sounds weird, but Johnny jumped in right away to offer and catch the student. I yelled out, hes not going to catch you, youve seen him play slo-pitch! Ah, good times, good times. Johnny who never met a tness test he liked and felt that any form of stretching only added work to the tness test! And who could forget the girls of my class? These were the girls who on any given day could go from playing with amazing energy and effort, to resembling the orange pylons we use to mark court lines! Often, the rst question Id get on a tness test day was what do I need to run to get a 50? You cant beat enthusiasm like that! I remember calling out to one of the guys: what is that strange moisture on your face? Is that is that sweat?!? Yes, they sometimes did exert enough effort to perspire, it was truly a sight to see! There was, however, a denite contrast between this class and my Band PE students. When the Band kids didnt take part, they would be on the sideline, reading whole novels! The Wreckers dont even know where the school library is! This was the same class that had a lot of difculty being energetic. It was like they were trying to save heartbeats for something they felt was more important like running from the law! I sometimes joked theyd do better on their tness tests, if they could run with a TV on their shoulders! You could never really do whole units of sports, as they liked a lot of variety. Of course, variety for most, meant only playing oor hockey. If there was an Olympics for oor hockey, wed have been a real contender! I sent one of my guys, Aaron, on an errand to the Student Services Ofce. Who knew that hed forget why he was sent there? Yep, he came back and sheepishly asked what he was supposed to say. I restated the message and to cement the deal, gave him a loonie. Oh, and Aaron, dont tell them some old guy gave you a dollar thats going to make both of us look creepy! Next, is my pal Kenny. Kenny is the one guy who actually put out the most effort each and every day in Rec.PE. The problem was, that one day, these efforts got him a concussion. He missed a lot of school days, and when he did return, he was raring to go! After about a week of classes, Kenny asked, can we play dodgeball today, Mr. Fule? I replied, Kenny, the only way youre playing dodgeball, is if we use balloons! I cant afford to have you get hurt. Ive ordered a checkerboard, and youll be playing checkers for a while, with a hockey helmet! Its a good thing high school kids like humour and that Kenny, whos bigger than me, is a nice guy! So, I was talked into another semester of Rec. PE20/30. I do have to admit that like warts or boils, they slowly grew on me! We wound up being a very fun class, and every day they made me smile, or laugh. Of course, there were also days when they drove me nuts, but Im sure they felt the same about me. I told them at the end that I wanted a group photo. They were fairly interested, until I told them it was so that I could name them if the police ever came here looking for one of them! Ah, the Wreckers you were an interesting bunch!

Rosebuds ready for 2014

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Each year Rosebuds Artistic Director Morris Ertman plans the new season around a theme. This year that theme is believe. The season will open on March 28 with The Dairy of Anne Frank. A year ago at this time when I was thinking about what should we revolve the season around, the idea of revolving the season around the word believe kind of came to the front, partly because I feel we need to capture belief again, said Ertman. Belief makes us do things that are noble and good, and that little word grabbed him and wouldnt let go. When he thinks about The Diary of Anne Frank there is this marvelous thing that Anne says, which he paraphrased: despite everything I believe that people are good at heart. The Diary of Anne Frank to me is the story of a young girl who is not unlike Anne of Green Gables, a really resilient, remarkable, lled-with-life kid who we wind up knowing and loving because of the size of her spirit, said Ertman. It kicks off our season because in a way it is the most optimistic picture of life you can possibly imagine. The story of Anne Frank is based on the real-life girl who was alive during very dark times in Germany. Its the story of Anne growing up, hiding away and eventually dying when she is sent to the camps. Her diary is a record of a resilient, amazing, full-of-life woman and it captures us all, said Ertman. It is just really interesting to me that we know this girl so well and we would have never known her if not for the dark situations in which she lived, said Ertman. Heroism shows up in the darkest of times, and he nds it interesting that in order to reach for a belief in goodness we have to actually reach into dark times to nd those stories. Next up on the 2014 roster is the return of a beloved Rosebud tale written in part by Royal Sproule. The show came out on the Rosebud stage years ago and Ertman said people have been asking about it ever since. So this year by popular demand Chickens is making a comeback. It is a musical with a lot of great tunes in it, everything from rock and roll to lovely folk ballads. Its got a really wonderful cross section of music. The story is of a farmer and his wife and their marriage is just a little stale, said Ertman. Pal the farmer doesnt seem to really see his wife, she is turning 40 soon and he, like so many middle-aged men, is anything but romantic. Pal is bankrupt and has one chance left to save the farm, so he brings home a prized hen and bets the farm on it. What winds up happening in the course of the story is of course these chickens talk and sing and weve got the story of the chickens in the farm yard and what is going on with them, said Ertman. It is just kind of crazy and fun and people will be belly laughing through this show and yet its got this marvelous point in the story about a man and his wife and them nally seeing one another in part because of the whole scenario with the chickens. On the studio stage May 7 to June 21 is I, Claudia. This show was originally performed last year, in April, as a student nal project by Natalie Gauthier. It had such an impact that Ertman knew he wanted it in the regular season. I actually believe that it has a shot to just travel across the country. If Natalie wanted to she could do this play in every fringe, it would start getting picked up and played in every theatre across the country, thats how strong it was, said Ertman. There have only ever been two other student projects that were added into the regular season. One was The Diary of Adam and Eve and For the Pleasure of Seeing Her Again. This year there are two shows on the studio stage. The second is a ctional piece about what would happen if Sigmund Freud and C.S. Lewis had ever sat down for a discussion. Lewis has a Christian apologetic point of view and is a ction writer, and Freud a secular humanist who believes you can understand yourself by looking into your past. Lewis begins to talk about how grace is the core of what drives us forward as humans. They get into it and it is incredibly dramatic because they both are powerful, amazing, articulate gures. There was a production of it done on the Edmonton fringe, were not doing that production, where apparently people on both side of the argument would come and cheer, said Ertman. Freuds Last Session will be on the studio stage July 2 to Aug. 23. Doubt will run Sept. 19 to Oct. 25. Its a Pulitzer prizewinning play that is about a nun running a boys school and a young, charismatic priest. The nun, Sister Aloysius, is convinced the priest is paying too much attention to one of the boys, and she is determined to expose him and the truth. The story really is about what it means to judge before you know. It is a powerful play, said Ertman. This play says hey guys, be careful how you accuse. It is on-the-edge-of your-seat drama, is the way people will get to experience this play. To wrap up the season Rosebud Theatre will be making the Canadian premiere of the musical The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe. This production is probably the most ambitious thing we have ever done. It is going to live up there with ddler on the roof and with Josephs Amazing Technicolour Dream coat, said Ertman. It is going to have that kind of scale and its going to be lled with incredible movement and storytelling. The beloved tale, written by C.S. Lewis, follows four siblings as they stumble through a magic wardrobe to the land of Narnia. The production could t anywhere in the season, but Ertman said they chose it as the Christmas production because it is something for the whole family to enjoy. Everything about it carries the same kind of hope that Christmas carries. It is interesting because if I was to nab its themes I would go well it is actually a story that takes place at Christmas and winds up at Easter, winds up in the spring, said Ertman. The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is a story for the whole family and I think that its the kind of show that people can bring their kids to, and they can come their selves and I see it as being a big family event. Performances on the studio stage and in the opera house are not the only ones the quaint hamlet has in store for its patrons this year. New to Rosebud this year is the Rosebud Presents series. There are six acts coming as part of the new series, beginning on Feb. 15 with a concert by Lewis and Royal, a folk duo out of Rosebud. Panic Squad, an energetic, crazy improv team will be back for another show on Feb. 22. On March 8 there is a theatre show for a younger audience. Jacks Giant Adventure is a modern retelling of the classic fairytale. Last year Letters from Wingeld Farm came to Rosebud at the end of summer. It was very successful, people just had a ball, were bringing back the next series, called Wingelds Progress and thats going to be kicking off in March, said Ertman. On Sept. 23 Jakes Gift, a show that has been travelling across Canada for the last ve years, will be making a stop in Rosebud. It is a chronicle about a World War II veterans journey back to Juno Beach. It is so successful that it just keeps going and going because people love it so much, said Ertman. At last, but certainly not least, Juno Award singer/songwriter Steve Bell will be coming to the Rosebud stage on Oct. 16. Things at Rosebud have been growing and expanding over the last few years. Since the completion of the new Mercantile the hamlet seems to be steadily adding on to its repertoire, giving people plenty of reasons to make the trek out to the picturesque community.

REMEMBErING OUr PAST

JOHN GODSMAN Times Contributor Teds paternal forefathers lived in Germany, and belonged to an Anabaptist group called the Church of the Brethren. Due to religious persecution, they moved to the United States in the 1700s, before the American Revolution. This denomination planted churches throughout the United States and Western Canada. In August 1910, Teds grandfather travelled from Iowa to view a farm near Sylvan Lake, and after staying the night at Lacombe, contacted the seller, who advised the farm was covered in snow. However, by the time they got there, it had all melted. His next step was to move his family from Iowa in 1911. He farmed it for a few years, but didnt like the wet climate, so he sold the farm and moved to California. He traded the land he owned in California for land one mile north of Shouldice in 1921, eventually moving to that land in 1923. He sold this land, and purchased land and a farm just east and north of Arrowwood in 1926. Teds mothers family, who were originally from Scotland, moved to Edmonton from Ontario. Teds father (Frank) was born in Iowa in1902, and moved to Bentley, and rented a farm near Sylvan Lake in 1923. Here he met his wife to be (Leala), while she was visiting an aunt there, and they were married in 1924. Initially, they lived in Edmonton where he was a reman, but farming was in his blood, so they moved to farm with grandfather at Arrowwood in1929. Frank and Leala rented a 3/4 section in the same district from Mr. Corey, a Gleichen lawyer, in 1931. Ted was born in May 1934, at Mrs. Lewendons Nursing Home in Arrowwood, the second child of three. He had an older sister, who passed away in 2012, and a brother who is 12 years his junior. He was raised and went to school at Arrowwood from this farm, then worked as an electricians helper in Gleichen, before he was married. Sheilas grandfather Richard Copithorne, moved from County Cork in Southern Ireland to Calgary in 1887, and homesteaded in the Jumping Pound district. In 1895, he married Sophia, whose family moved from Ontario to Springbank. He established the CL Ranch, on the banks of the Jumping Pound Creek. Sheilas mothers family had moved from Ontario to Cochrane in 1904. Sheila was born in the Holy Cross Hospital in Calgary, in 1935 and was raised by her parents Percy and Edna at the

around The Church of The Brethren, which merged with The United Church of Canada in 1968. Ted has served on the boards of The Arrowwood Co-op, and Camp Chestermere. For two years, he was President of The Alberta Association of Land Owners for the Protection of Agricultural Land - AALPAL. It was formed to protect agricultural land adjacent to The TransCanada Trail. Sheila helped with the Girl Guides, the Home and School Association, taught ESL, and volunteered at the Arrowwood School. After moving to Strathmore they became very active with the Alliance Church. The biggest change theyve seen in this area is the growth of the town, the population boom, and demographics.

CL Ranch. She was the eldest of three children, with a brother and sister following. She completed her elementary education at the Little Jumping Pound School, and took her high school at Mount Royal College where she lived in the dorm, before entering nurses training at Calgary General Hospital. She acquired a nursing position at the Vulcan Hospital, where she met Ted on a blind date, in the fall of 1956. They were married in August 1957, and had three daughters who have provided them with six lovely grandchildren and two lovely great-grandchildren. Following their wedding, they moved to the farm just south of Arrowwood, where they rented 1 1/2 sections of land. After purchasing this land it became their farm base. Teds father owned a 1/4 section nearby, and when he died at the young age of 64, Ted and Sheila purchased this property from the family. As the years passed, they continued to buy land. Their farm is predominantly grain, but they did have a small herd of beef cows. The farm was good to them and they both loved it. A highlight was when Robert and Mary Staneld, the Conservative Leader of the Opposition in Ottawa, spent a Labour Day weekend with them, to try and get a handle on the economics of farming. Sheila ran a combine during harvest, and in 1980 Ted bought her a new Massey Ferguson combine for their 23rd Wedding Anniversary, for $47,000. As many of my readers will know, Massey Ferguson went bankrupt the following winter (1981). A neighbour telephoned CBC telling them that Sheila had just been given a new combine for their anniversary, and Peter Gzowski interviewed her by phone on Valentines Day at six in the morning for his live broadcast! They decided to retire to Strathmore in 2007, so the farm was split between two of the daughters and husbands, who live locally. The third daughter lives with her husband in Texas. The farm had been incorporated as Prairie Rose Farms Ltd, so this would be an easy transition of ownership. All three daughters, with their respective husbands, have continued in the agriculture eld, very successfully. When I asked them why they had retired to Strathmore, they said they liked the town, and Teds mother had moved to Wheatland Lodge. Additionally, it was close enough to where Sheilas family lives, west of Calgary. In Arrowwood, their community activities revolved

Paying it forward

Friends First is an initiative that was inspired by Hazel Skinner. It teaches young women in sports to be kind, support one another and to pay it forward. MacKenzie Duggan from the Strathmore U12A ringette team won a $500 individual essay contest that the initiative held. On Saturday, Jan. 18 the Calgary RATH (national ringette league) presented Duggan with her cheque of $500 for her essay Red Skate Laces. Red skate laces represents the initiatives motto, and the trend is taking over the Alberta Ringette League, everywhere you go you see players wearing one red lace. The U12A team also got a special surprise thanks to their coach Lana Lane. Lane sponsored the girls for a pre-game skate with the Calgary RATH, the girls got to sing the national anthem with the team as well as meet after the game to get autographs.

Compliance means extra work for Wheatland County

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Steps taken to integrate the South Saskatchewan Regional Plan (SSRP) into Wheatland County policy may not be as straightforward as representatives of the Land Secretariat hope. The Secretariats representatives presented a six step plan in Wheatland Council on Jan. 7 that was hoped to speed municipalities on their way to meeting the goals of the plan. The SSRP has been under development since 2006 and will be given nal approval in the spring of 2014. This doesnt change a lot of processes that are already in effect, said Johannes Wong, spokesman for the group. This is not all new policy; it is probably something you have used in the past. For those areas, it is just a matter of moving whats in place to coincide with the regional plan. Wong encouraged council to keep in mind the SSRP when they are going through the countys Municipal Development Plan and their review of the Land Use bylaws, because there are regulated areas of the SSRP plan that will need to be enforced and affect both areas. Where regulated areas of the SSRP seem in conict with the Municipal Government Act, the SSRP prevails by law. Wong gave council and staff contact information, in case they needed more clarication on portions of the 157 page plan. This is not only a planning and development issue. It goes beyond to other decisions, said Wong. The rst step of the implementation process, outlined by Wong, was to identify areas where the plan affects the municipality. The second will require county council to direct documentation of their regulatory instruments. Third, they will direct staff to compare the plan to all existing bylaws and regulations approved in the past and currently in use. This task will be incredibly time consuming. As yet, no money has been advanced by the province for additional staff or man hour payments required to complete the work. It remains to be seen if money for implementation of initiatives will be forthcoming after nal approval for the plan from cabinet. The fourth step of the plan will require any areas of Wheatland County governance or land use bylaws that are not in compliance with the regulated areas of the SSRP to be changed; so, all those areas will have to come through council processes for discussion and acceptance. Fifth, council has to show acceptance of those changes with accompanying paperwork; and nally, the CAO will sign a declaration that all the appropriate work has been completed. There were several areas of conict that would circumvent a smooth transition of the six step process. Councillors pointed out just a few shortfalls. One was a strong objection to the assumptions surrounding the Calgary Municipal, and subsequently Regional, plan. Sections of the SSRP assume that all municipalities are in agreement with all portions of those regional programs. Wheatland County has opted out of participation in the Calgary Municipal Plan, due to the voting structure and issues with water rights. Several other rural municipalities have raised their objections as well. This is a fairly good document, but there is one piece of this that scares the hell out of me, said Councillor Ben Armstrong about the sections that may mandate all municipalities to participate in the regional plans. Councillor Alice Booth stated she resented being massaged by the SSRP into giving compliance to enforced regional initiatives that the municipality doesnt support. She also felt the plan did not represent agricultural concerns adequately and wanted dened oil and gas pipeline installation corridors along section markers. Councillor Brenda Knight objected to the plan restricting recreational trails to utility corridors, as it wasnt as applicable in Wheatland County as it was to western forested regions. Water supply and population expansion concerns within the next two decades were also brought up, and councillors indicated their concerns arent being heard. Secretariat representatives assured council that all the indicated concerns would be brought before appropriate channels and the CRP objections placed on an upcoming agenda of senior management. They encouraged council to once again write letters to the secretariat, appropriate ministries and cabinet ofcials. Council directed that staff contact other municipalities with similar interests to coordinate efforts on a letter campaign. Secretariat representatives also indicated there might still be time for developing solutions to some of the plans shortfalls, before provincial implementation, as the nalization process still involved passage through committees and cabinet approval. However, in Wongs summation, he continued to stress that all efforts of compliance to regional interests would not go unrecognized. At the end of the day, we recognize the work various partnerships have done and consider there is value in the inter-cooperation between municipalities and support for a collaboration of efforts, said Wong.

Memories of Carseland School

The following are some memories from a few students and staff at Carseland School over the years. Instead of focusing on one memory, we decided to list a few in hopes of prompting your memories as well:

DO YOU REMEMVER WHEN:

- The janitors lived downstairs in the school. When they moved out, the kitchen and living room was changed into the staff room. - We rolled mercury around in our hands in the science lab. - Home economics relied on donations from local farmers for the menu to cook on a given week. - The teachers absolutely loved the big brick school, but could have done without the mice running along the oor. - Hunter training was a subject? One year the teacher lit the hedge on re making bannock. - The grade 1 class was rained on while watching a lm in the basement library. The hunter training instructor had forgotten to thaw a sh for the next class so was thawing it in the upstairs sink with the sink plugged. - Mr. Holt drove a pink car. (Part 2)

New manager opens door

SHARON MCLEAY Times Contributor Judy Unsworth is placing high heels next to gumboots as she steps into the role of Fire and Emergency Management Coordinator for Wheatland County, replacing Gerald Skibinsky. I am very excited about having the opportunity to work here. I am looking forward to working with each municipality, the re associations and all the volunteers in the county. I think we are on the verge of some positive growth and a fantastic future, said Unsworth. She has had 17 years re experience, working her way up the ladder as a reghter in the County of RockyView. She spent seven years as a volunteer reghter, three as a lieutenant, ve as re chief, two years as captain and two as district chief. I really, really liked it. I loved being on the re truck, doing re calls. I loved training and the crews were amazing, said Unsworth. It gave me a really good grassroots understanding of the re service. She has worked with full time reghters as well as volunteer reghters. In my experience the full time are all extremely professional, but the really passionate reghters are the volunteers because they really love it. I think there is a ton of opportunity here, said Unsworth. I am hoping the existing volunteer chiefs will be helpful. Each seems to have unique strengths that complement each other. I think if we work togetherif we all have a buy in and share collectively it will be a good thing. When asked if being a woman held any unique challenges in past or present roles, she replied that whether a man or woman is asked to ll a role, it comes down to whether they have the physical and mental capacity to ll the requirements of the role. As a reghter, I was really fortunate because in Irricana there were a lot of women. Certainly there are some prejudices, but I refuse to play that game. We are all here to the job and I like to think that I am trained and educated to do it. I really believe in working together as a unit. It is our nature to want to help each other and want to do well and help our communities, said Unsworth. Part of the hiring process had Unsworth comment on the upcoming re review implementation. When asked about those challenges, she said helping people overcome the fear of the unknown will be crucial. I think all these men and women have been passionate enough to stay with this re service through its changes and if this is channeled in the right direction, great things will happen, said Unsworth. It actually gives me great hope that Wheatland County, council and their CAO and management were willing to look at the Pandoras box in the re service; so much so that they hired someone to come and take a look at it and perform a review, which takes a lot of bravery in my opinion. Their willingness to move forward with it speaks greatly to their commitment. Her past experience as an elected ofcial gives her a perspective of how council might approach issues. We denitely have a responsibility to our reghters. Not only do they leave their families in the middle of the night to put their lives at risk, now they carry the liability for that. The liability is humungous if we dont all pitch in and sing one song, said Unsworth. Unsworth has lived in Southern Alberta for 20 years and her father was an RCMP, which makes her aware of challenges facing other emergency services, as well. Completion of levels one to four in Disaster Service operations and participation in incident command and emergency response situations will most certainly come in handy, as the county develops its emergency response callout plans and sets up the new EOC area of the administration building renovation. She said her communication style is open and transparent and she favours honest and direct responses. Her past work for an international publisher, the Chestermere Anchor and the RockyView Weekly led to good inside knowledge of communication processes and audiences that she might encounter in her new role. She has already had several re chiefs drop in for a quick chat. Everyone has been very supportive. The fact that people are calling and coming by to say hi, makes me feel very honoured, said Unsworth.

Bringing new life to old furniture

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter Do you have an old chair in your house that you know has potential, you just dont know exactly how to bring it out? What about an old china cabinet, or buffet? Patricia Coone and Desiree Maerz, owners of New View Furniture, would love to help you with your project. The women love to nd old junk furniture - chairs, tables and so on - and give them new life. Its something they are passionate about, and is a passion they hope to share and teach others. A lot of people would rather say, here you do it but I think when you take the time and have the patience and you show someone how to do it themselves I think is more inspiring. It is denitely inspiring me anyways, said Coone. The women will often wander about town on Heavy Item Garbage day to see if anyone is tossing a gem away, like the walnut table and chairs they found one day. Our signature is we like to do bold things. Our idea with the zebra chair (pictured) is that you can put that in a room and change the atmosphere of the room with the throw pillows without having to repaint, said Maerz. Not just any piece of furniture will do. Something that doesnt require a ton of repair. I can do repair but its just time consuming if you need to start doing major x ups. Not everything is worth xing up, said Maerz about what works. Something that has a good foundation to it, said Coone. Coones goal with the business was to nd something she is passionate about, that doesnt take away from her family coming rst. Desiree challenged me on that dream, and with her condence and skills, I am able to realize those dreams and still be a mom and wife, said Coone. It makes getting the house-work at night done more desirable knowing I can spend more time sanding pieces in the garage or inventing with Desiree. Both women were working on a new piece at the end of December. I am working on a green chair that needs some re-upholstering and hope to tackle the other furniture thats now piled in my garage. As with anything in life, nding a great foundation is the key to a good piece of furniture, said Coone. Maerz was working on a small-stenciled dining room table, and a childs IKEA chair that they had repainted and recovered with colouring book type fabric, and a set of nesting tables. The childs chair has already sold. Theres something about working on furniture and recreating a piece that speaks to both of them women in a way they love. I most love that at the end of the project I can say I did that myself and I never bought it and know someone else wont have the same design or color, said Coone. I also loved meeting people at the Home Hardware Ladies Night and the Christmas Farmers Market in November who love to do the same thing and even the stories some of these pieces have. Ultimately I love the relationships that it builds and I love working with Desiree. I get bored really, really fast, so waking up every day to a new challenge keeps me motivated, said Maerz. Im also an artist, so painting is one of my favourite things to do. Ive always been attracted to things that are asymmetrical and out of the ordinary. This world doesnt need more brown furniture it needs bold and bright colours. The women are more than happy to consult with others recreating their own pieces, and encourage anyone with a question to give them a call at 403-3243327 or message them on Facebook under New View Furniture.

Multiple men arrested in vehicle thefts, break and enter

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter We may only be a few weeks into the New Year, but the Strathmore RCMP detachment has been busy closing a number of cases in town. Jan. 6 to 14 the detachment began 12 theft-of-vehicle investigations. It was believed by the RCMP that the people responsible were a group of men from Calgary who were staying in the Strathmore area. On Jan. 10 William Kelly a.k.a. Corey York, 19, and Dakota Bolton, a.k.a. Dakota Domroes, 19, were charged with several criminal code offences coming from these investigations. In the bail hearings held on Jan. 10, Bolton was released on bail and Kelly was held in custody and appeared in provincial court on Jan. 21. On Jan. 14 the detachment responded to a break-and-enter call at a business in Rockyford. Items valued over $5,000 were taken from the business. A truck that had been stolen in Calgary was located in Strathmore a short time later. It was believed that the truck had been used for the break and enter. A residential search warrant was executed and seven people were arrested later that day in connection with the investigation. Jan. 15 saw three more men arrested in the Strathmore area. Dakota Bolton, 19, Wilfred Barrett a.k.a. Bronson Palmantier, 19, and Robert Bourassa, 19, were charged with break and enter to commit theft, possession of stolen property and other related offences. Bourassa was also arrest for 14 outstanding warrants of arrest for various criminal code offences out of Calgary. All three were held in custody and appeared in Strathmore Provincial Court on Jan. 21 for bail hearings.

WHAT IS YOUR VISION? When he was 88, the Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes found himself on a train. The conductor called for tickets, but Justice Holmes couldnt nd his ticket and seemed terribly upset. He searched his pockets and fumbled through his wallet without success. The conductor was sympathetic. Dont worry, Mr. Holmes, he said. The Pennsylvania Railroad will be happy to trust you. When you reach your destination youll probably nd the tickets and you can mail it to us. The conductors kindness did not put Holmes at ease. He said, My dear man, my problem is not Where is my ticket? but rather Where am I going? Unfortunately we are too often just like that. We move forward through life unsure of how to respond to the changing situations in world around us. The problem often is that we have no clear direction or picture of where we are going. We lack a dened destination, in other words, we lack vision. The Bible tells us that having a vision is vitally important for our lives. Proverbs 29:18 states that, without vision the people perish. The primary meaning of the word vision in this text is the prophetic vision or revelation. But this word also has a secondary meaning. The word for vision comes from the Hebrew root word haza, which means to see, or to perceive. Vision is being able to see. It is intelligent foresight, by which we look at what is possible to be accomplished with God on our side. A personal vision is an ideal and unique picture of the future that produces passion in you. It is what you are passionate about. With no vision, there is no focus, no goal to work towards, so, as a result, people perish. So, when people dont have a vision, they invest their time and energy into things that are useless. If there is no vision, people waist their time and energy, because they are working without a goal. Paul Hovey says that, A blind mans world is bounded by the limits of his touch; an ignorant mans world by the limits of his knowledge; a great mans world by the limits of his vision. The question that I have for you is: are you limited in your personal life because of a lack of vision? Great people have a vision. Do you have one? Bluesland wants to get Strathmore dancing

SHANNON LEClAIR Times Reporter The Musical Arts Society is once again bringing a top act to town, one guaranteed to have you dancing the night away. Bluesland with the Cold Sweat Horns will be playing at the Travelodge on Feb. 14. Blueslands members have played at festivals and shows throughout North America. We had them way back in the late 1990s and they do a lot of swing, blues and jazz and funk, so a real cross section of music, said Linda Storkson, president of the Strathmore Musical Arts Society. The music was so good at the rst show the dance oor was expanded because everybody was up and dancing. Were going to play dance music that is going to have people dancing, no question about it. We like to play great music that is danceable, funky and gets people up, said original band member Terry Medd. Bluesland plays a mix of blues, funk, soul and jazz. A few of the members have been inuenced by shows they have done in New Orleans and it shows in their newest album, says Medd. Some of us have played at New Orleans in the south and were inuenced by that Memphis-toNew Orleans area so we were keen to do a recording that would reect that, and we have been writing songs that reect that, said Medd.

Medd hopes that the album Down in New Orleans will be ready for sale at the Strathmore show. The band plans to play some older favourites, and will also be debuting songs off the new album. Medd has always had strong roots in the music industry. We were raised in a house that listened to horn music. Louis Armstrong was probably the rst blues horn that I listened to. Pretty early on I started forming horn bands so I have been doing horn bands for 40 years, something like that, in various forms in western Canada, said Medd. Music has always been really important to me. I operate a small project-recording studio out here in Springbank. We produce singers, songwriters, we do records for them and weve recorded the Down in New Orleans album here. Anyone who buys their ticket early could also win an extra little treat. We are putting together a Valentines package, so it is a stay at the Days Inn for one night and then dinner at the Station and there will be a bottle of wine in the room, said Storkson. All you have to do to get your name entered into the draw is buy your tickets on or before Feb. 7. Tickets are for sale at PJs Appliances, Assist Business and Pro Water Systems for $50 each. They include dinner and the show at the Travelodge. Strathmore teen songstress Kirstyn Johnson will be performing the opening act.

Offering a helping hand

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Grade 9 Holy Cross student Carter Tongs does more than captain the junior varsity volleyball team. Tongs assists in the Strathmore community whenever he can. Every year, he volunteers during Heritage Days, and at the Hope Community Church with their House of the Christmas Mouse event. This thing at our church, its a day where you take a whole bunch of kids and babysit them, Tongs said. You go around to a bunch of stations with them. They had a bouncy castle and carnival games. Tongs also makes time to play club volleyball in Calgary. Its U15, and its the Alberta Volleyball Association. So he plays with the Alberta league, and then they go to provincials, and nationals, Carters mother, Corinne said. Tongs, she mentioned, has wanted to play volleyball since he was three-years-old, after rst seeing the sport. It was just sort of a given that he would play volleyball, Corinne said. Hes a setter, he played school and club last year. Weve seen him develop and denitely get a lot better, just with more coaching and more skill. Though he used to play lacrosse with the Strathmore Venom, volleyball has taken over his free time. Tongs plays three nights a week in Calgary, and even completes his homework on the way into the city, to maintain his honour-student status. He wishes to keep up with volleyball as his education continues, even into post-secondary. I think I would like to, yeah, he said. I kind of want to take physics. Hes always talked about becoming a teacher, Corinne said, and joked about coming back to teach at Holy Cross. Or somewhere warmer, Carter said. Tongs wishes to work on his vertical jump before next years potential leap to the senior varsity Hawks; he stands at 58 now, but is still sprouting. His strongest skill, he believes, is getting to the ball quickly to prepare the set. Your vertical just improves the more you play, he said. Then, making your sets high, not necessarily to where theyre supposed to be but higher so that your hitters can get there, he said. See Tongs in action for Zone 2s volleyball team at the Alberta Winter Games.

Double gold for Rockyford

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter At the largest ringette tournament in the world, the Rockyford Ringers U16B and U19B both took home rst during the Esso Golden Ring Tournament in Calgary from Jan. 17-19. The U19B squad was defending champion from last years competition, and is currently rst in the Southern Alberta league. The team played excellent, said U19B Coach Warren Kalbhen. There was a lot of competition. We were denitely glad to win it. Eight teams were in the U19B pool; Rockyford defeated the South Calgary Legacy 11-4, Calgary North Nova 9-3, and tied the Drayton Valley Velocity 4-4 in round robin play. I think Drayton Valley had a good team, they were a good match for us for sure, Kalbhen said. After rolling through the semi nals, Rockyford defeated Calgary North Nova once again on Jan. 19 by a score of 8-3 for gold. While the U19B squad was almost expected to win, the U16B team was a true fairytale, as ve of their players were not even of age. Were just bringing kids up to make a team, Kevin Elder said, one of the U16B coaches. It was really good. We certainly didnt expect it. In our league play, were probably middle of the pack. There are couple of teams that have basically been undefeated all year, and we ended up beating them. In a pool of 12 teams, the U16B Ringers defeated South Calgary Conquest 13-7, Medicine Hat 8-1, and Calgary North Potencia 7-1. Winning their quarter-nal and their semi nal gave the U16B hope for the nal against the Lethbridge Boom. They won on Jan. 19 by a score of 7-4. I dont know where it came from, Elder said. They just stepped up their game. You can rant and rave and talk all you want, but unless the kids decide themselves they get all the credit. Elders team have provincials come the middle of March, but need to qualify for the playoffs rst. The U19B team will be hosting their provincials at the end of March in Rockyford.

The Canadian National Womens Team and the UFA Bisons were tied 3-3 at the end of regulation, thanks to Mackenzie Bauers game-tying powerplay goal with less than a minute remaning. Unofficially, the Bisons won in a shootout, with the lone goal coming from defenseman Tristan Thompson. The Canadian National Womens Team played all 18 teams in the AMHL in preparation for Sochi, only winning on three occasions.

Bisons edge out Team Canada

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter With a win at stake to increase league standings, the UFA Bisons faced off against the Canadian National Womens Team on Jan. 17 at Canada Olympic Park. For the Olympians, it was a chance to practice before leaving for Sochi this week, but with two weeks remaining in the AMHL season, the Bisons wanted as many points as possible before the playoffs. The Bisons were leading after the rst period, with goals from Mason McCarty and Clay Murray. Team Canada came storming back in the second, with a three-goal effort from Hayley Wickenheiser, Rebecca Johnston, and Lauriane Rougeau. Up 3-2, Wickenheiser took a hooking penalty near the end of the third period, which led to the gametying powerplay goal by Bisons captain Mackenzie Bauer, with less than a minute remaining. Thats an enthusiastic, young team we played tonight, Team Canada Coach Kevin Dineen said. Weve got a bigger picture coming down the line. I think when youre in a season its obviously a big two points that counts in their schedule. For us, were still building towards the tournament setting in a couple weeks. The game was considered a 3-3 tie under the AMHL points system, but after no results through overtime, the two squads went head to head in a shootout to decide an unofcial winner. Defenseman Tristan Thompson was the lone goal scorer, giving the Bisons the win in the third round of shooters. Last year, I had a chance to shoot in the shootout as well, and I didnt do so good. This year, I wanted to put it in, Thompson said. It was good to win because we were trying hard that whole game, especially with that last minute tie. We were glad we got a point. We werent at our best tonight, said Bisons coach Dan MacDonald, noting it was a late game during the boys exam week at school. Were playing the best teams and you have to be at your best. Thats always your goal. When we get into the playoffs, thats how itll be too. You have to rise to the occasion. The Bisons had played Team Canada in the pre-season as well; the ladies have played every team in the AMHL for some competition prior to the Winter Games, winning only three of 18 matchups. I thought we played pretty well, we just had some unlucky bounces, said Canadian forward Hayley Wickenheiser. I think we carried the play for the majority of the game. We had penalties late in the game, and that cost us. Throughout the matchup, Team Canada seemed much more structured in their defensive game, but the Bisons offensive style looked to throw them off. Its always hard to play a team thats more scramble-y for sure. You have to positionally try to stay strong but their size and their reach makes it difcult at times, Wickenheiser said. The Canadian National Womens Team is currently preparing to leave for the Sochi Olympics this week. Its great to play these games and to have the support of people here in Calgary, who come and watch us, cheer us on. Wed like to get a win here before we head to Sochi, but these midget games really help us prepare for the grind, Wickenheiser said. Its been a lot of fun.

MacDonald loses to former team

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Riding a high from defeating the Canadian National Womens Team on Jan. 17 in a shootout, the UFA Bisons could not handle their coachs previous team, as they lost 6-5 to the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs at home on Jan. 19. The Chiefs had four powerplay goals, including the game winner with six minutes remaining, after Shane Fraser was assessed a kneeing penalty. We dont want to lose to those guys. I know all those guys, said Bisons coach Dan MacDonald. Theyre a good team theyre rst place for a reason. Were ghting with them for rst, but I just think that theyre a little bit further advanced than we are right now. The Bisons had two powerplay markers of their own, from Tristan Thompson and Mackenzie Bauer; Mason McCarty and William Conley also found the back of the net. Bauer nished with another goal and two assists a four point night. We always have a couple players that we need out, and they have a full team, MacDonald said of Red Deer. We need our whole team to be as good as they are. Connor Boyd remains out with a cyst on his back, but began practicing again this week. Hes anticipated to return at the beginning of February. Ryan Zeniuk is off the bench with the u and an ear infection, and should return soon as well. Continued on Page 20

Bisons fall to Red Deer

Continued from Page 19 Theyre a big part of our team. You miss them, said MacDonald of his two assistant captains. We havent played with a full team much this year. Just a couple times. The Bisons have a week off for exams, and have their next game Feb. 1 against the Calgary Buffaloes. Three games remain in the regular season after that, against the Calgary Flames, the St. Albert Sports Raiders, and CAC Gregg Distributors. Right now were in second by one point, MacDonald said. The Royals have one game in hand, so who knows? Thats how tight it is. Weve got to win those games. With 41 points and a 19-9-3 record, the Bisons know they have qualied for the playoffs; whats not known is where they will nish in the standings and if they will receive a bye in the rst round (as only the top two teams in each division do). These last four games become very important for us. We have to play tighter. Were scoring more goals now, we wanted to do that, MacDonald said, with the return of Bauer and McCarty to the lineup. Were not playing tight enough in our own end, we have to shore those things up.

A Finnish opportunity
ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter While watching his daughters 16-year-old Taylor and 15-year-old Korrie play in the Hayley Wickenheiser World Female Hockey Festival in Calgary from Nov. 21-24, Gord Stewart was asked an interesting question. The girls play for the Strathmore midget Storm. We got asked by a Finnish coach, coincidentally, wondering whos that number 6 and that number 9, Stewart said, those players being his two daughters. We started talking about their ability, and the Fins said theyd like to see them come over to Europe to play. Gords wife Nina is of Finnish origin, making the girls eligible for their Finnish citizenship. Were just going through that process right now, of seeing whats required, Gord said. Its neat. Who gets that chance? Im excited about it. The girls, who typically host the Hearts of the West Show, will have to cut their riding season short, as they would leave in Aug. for the Finland Womens Elite League, and return June 2015. After a two week introductory Finnish language course, they would begin school in a foreign country, only knowing a few words from their mother. I just really want to go and experience all of it, Korrie said, not scared of the situation. I kind of think everything will just work out. Taylor and Korrie have been playing hockey for seven years, and were playing at the bantam level by ages 10 and

Chiefs cant string wins

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter Due to the SCAHL All-Star Weekend, the midget Wheatland Chiefs had a lone game this past week on Jan. 17, against the Bow Valley Timberwolves at the Spray Lake Sawmills Family Sports Centre. The outcome wasnt as fruitful as hoped for, with a 7-4 loss. At one point, the Chiefs were only behind 4-3 in the second period. Were kind of in a slump right now. Weve had a pretty bad year with injuries, which is kind of catching up to us. Weve been playing shorthanded for most of the year, said Devin Olson, midget coach. We try to get some bodies back, and every time we do, another one goes out key injuries too, some fairly key guys. Four Chiefs are currently injured, and Olsons squad has relied on goalie Mike Conrad almost all season in net. Hes been good, hes been pretty solid all year. Hes been making some pretty good saves lately; weve been giving up a lot of shots, Olson said. Against Bow Valley, the Chiefs goalie faced 39 shots while his teammates managed 28. On Jan. 11, in a 4-1 loss against Red Deer, Conrad faced 55 shots. Still, the goaltender represented Wheatland in the SCAHL All-Star Game, and has a .910 save percentage on the season. Wheatland had also lost to Bow Valley on Dec. 22, by a closer margin of 2-1. This time around, Coltyn Herman had two assists to add to his team-leading 41 points in 26 games; Blair Roszell had a goal and a helper. Other scorers were Mckay Bray, Daryl Agerskov, and Cody Willis but it wasnt enough. Wheatland has only won one of their last ve games, and now have a 15-9-2 record. They face Lethbridge at home on Jan. 24. I think its just something, once we put a couple of wins together, you get a little condence, Olson said. Right now, everybody is gripping their sticks pretty tight you dont want to screw up. After a break through All-Star Weekend, the bantam Warriors play Medicine Hat in Hussar on Jan. 25, while the peewee Braves face off against the Lacombe Rockets on Jan. 25 as well.

ARYSSaH STaNKEVITSCH Times Reporter After suffering a back injury of a fracture and two slipped discs, Strathmores former gure skater Lindsay Woodcock chose to give back to the Strathmore Skating Club, where her mother had been the head coach for 10 years. Ive been involved for three years; this is my rst year as head coach, Woodcock said. Woodcock has been skating for 20 years, and stuck with the sport when she was younger because of her natural skill. At rst it was, this is fun, and you get to miss school. The opportunities that were presented through the years I got to compete nationally and travel the world with it. It created a great atmosphere for me, she said. Woodcock took part in the Canada Winter Games, and traveled throughout the nation, but also to Philadelphia, New York and California to train and compete. The bonus of training in California, was that I got one of the best coaches in the world, John Nicks, she said. Pushing through her back pain in the 2011 season, Woodcock decided to leave competitions at the end of the year. I just overdid it. It was a fall that ultimately took me out, she said. I made it as far as I could, and then I retired, and got involved with doing some shows. Those shows included one for the Calgary Stampede, alongside Canadian Olympians Jamie Sale and David Pelletier. Prior to her injury, Woodcock was based at the Calalta Figure Skating Club in Calgary, but would spend her summers training at Barrie, Ontarios National Training Centre. You get into a rhythm. Youd do your programs at this time, then youd train. In the entire skating season, Id only get two weeks off, Woodcock said. The training just came as though something was inside; as good as you think you are, theres always somebody better than you. It was always that which motivated me to keep going. Woodcock skated six days a week, with three to four hours of training on the ice and off the ice, including working out, yoga, pilates, running, plyometrics, and mental therapy. Theres constantly something everyday that I had to do to make sure I stay in the game, and keep my head clear, she said. I had the support from my parents and my family, that was huge, to always have someone sitting in the stands watching you. Though she misses the tournaments oh yeah, I do. All the time, she said teaching young kids is just as rewarding. Coaching for me, I really grew to it. My entire life, skating is just what Ive always done. Its natural to me. To do what Ive done for a lot of these girls, that accomplishment you cant get that in a gold medal, she said. In terms of advice for young girls following her path, she says to look past the hard moments. Youve got to remember why youre doing it, and why you love to lace up those skates. Take those falls, and take that heartache continue for you, and what you want out of it, she said. You cant let other people tell you what they want from you. It really is your sport.

DID YOU KNOW?

A Condominium is a TERM applied to a specific type of ownership rather than any distinct style of building. For example: an apartment in a highrise vs a home on its own lot in a golf community - both could be a condominium. All owners of units (individual apartments/lots in a subdivision) make up the condominium corporation - similar to shareholders in an incorporated company, but the corporation has no capital. Deciding on condominium ownership is a lifestyle choice, beneficial to those looking for more economical property ownership. It is also for those seeking security and is a good lifestyle alternative for single people, professional couples or retired people. However, you must be prepared to live within the restrictions of By-Laws which are intended to protect the interests of the owners. One of the most pertinent steps when making an offer on a condominium, is to have a condominium document review completed by a professional company offering this service. The review companies do charge a fee, but the information you receive will alert you to any deficiencies in the building and let you know of the financial standing of the complex. The outcome of the report will help you with your decision to move forward with your purchase, revealing information you may not have known otherwise thus giving you the satisfaction knowing you have the information to make a sound decision on your purchase. Ask your Realtor regarding all aspects on condominium ownership...you may decide it is the best ownership for you!
