guess some of our readers have be-come a bit tired of waiting and won-dering when the new issue would be re-leased. I am really sorry about the longdelay, but there have been some seriousfinancial and time issues holding upproduction.I want to begin with sincere thanksto people who made donations to ourmagazine. Orlin Chankov and SteveKramer, thank you, guys, for your help.Your donations were much appreciated.We’ve come to realise that producingthe magazine with only advertising andsponsors to support it is impossible.We’ve decided to change our businessmodel slightly. We are going to runspecial proprietary editions of each is-sue with bonus articles. These special editions will be available in electronic(printable PDF) and paper versions.From this issue forward, the latest issuewill be available only for purchase fora period—say one or two weeks frompublication—and will be fully releasedafterwards for everyone, minus the bo-nus articles.It’s regrettable to have to move in thisdirection but it seems the only way tomake the magazine viable. Orlin andSteve, for their generosity, will havefree, unlimited subscriptions to theelectronic version of IBDeveloper mag-azine.
Borland
On February 8, Borland published plansto spin off the developer product line,including Delphi and InterBase. Itlooked so peculiar at the time thatmany developers said “Borland is dead”,and probably several less printable ex-pressions. It was really strange and,for months, all we had were rumors andfuzzy press-releases.Recently, however, the chief Borlandexecutives of the new “DevCo” (DavidI, Jason Vokes and others) went on aworldwide tour to clarify events andplans for the developer community. Imet with Jason in Moscow on May 23 ata «Borland Developer Studio» confer-ence and a lot of things got clearer.In essence, Borland is splitting into twocompanies: one is solution-targeted(ALM) and the other is oriented on de-veloper tools. As I understand, the De-veloper Company (alias “DevCo”) guyswere the initiators of the spin-off be-cause they considered the IDE productline too different from the ALM busi-ness. I can even guess that Delphi andthe other IDEs were the financial propsfor ALM! Jason did not say so, of course,but it seems quite obvious to me.According to their statements, there’sno problem with Delphi sales—Delphi2006 is a bestseller—and no problemwith its development. Jason demon-strated an impressive roadmap for Del-phi up to 2009, with many exciting fea-tures, and things of interest for JBuilderand C++ Builder too.According to the team, InterBase salesare good and its roadmap is interesting,too. There is no indication that DevCointends to drop all these profitableproducts and, personally, I feel muchbetter about it all now. We can onlyawait the completion of the spin-off.Just one other thing—why isn’t thereany name for “DevCo” yet? One guess isthat the “Borland” brand is one of themost precious assets of the companyand both the IDE and ALM sides want tohave it. Anyway, Delphi and InterBaseare here to stay, regardless of whetherthe branding is “Borland” or “DevCo”!
Jim
Jim Starkey was one of the main news-makers since the previous issue. Jim isa living legend and becomes more andmore popular (I think he should startto sell autographs via eBay!). MySQLbought Jim’s company Netfrastructureand hired Jim to make a proprietarydatabase engine for them. In this is-sue Carlos H. Cantu comments on all these events in his article “From Birdsto Dolphins”. As editor I should em-phasize that this article is his personal (rather interesting) point of view. Jim’sdeparture from active development onFirebird provided an excellent opportu-nity to promote Firebird. Now everyoneknows where successful companies arelooking to headhunt developers andget good ideas :)

This issue is mostly devoted to Fyracle.I’d like to express great thanks to Paul Ruizendaal, Vlad Horsun and EugeniyPutilin for their help with creating thisissue.
