BLOOD & ROSES: LOVE IN EURO-HORROR

BLOOD & ROSES: LOVE IN EURO-HORROR

DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS (1971, 35mm) Of the several amazing things that have ever come out of Europe, right at the top of the list is the Lesbian Vampire movie. And there is no more superlative example of that ecstatic, erotic, licentiously macabre territory than Belgian weirdo Harry Kumels hyper-stylized psychological high Gothic heart-piercer DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS. The worlds worst newlywed couple arrive at an enormous, abandoned hotel in the middle of winter but are soon joined by a mysterious Countess (played the impossibly elegant Delphine Seyrig) and her beautiful young secretary, who seem to have designs on the tortured young bride. Strange gets stranger as desire and terror intertwine and the couple descend into a world of sadism, obsession, sex, death, and of course -- lesbian vampires! Saturated with powerful primary colors and surreal and sultry dialogue, DAUGHTERS OF DARKNESS also features possibly THE greatest horror lm score of all time. Eroticized power, decaying grandeur, abstract and ceremonious evil... this is Euro-horror love. THE LORELEIS GRASP (1974, 35mm) Part trash-gore warrior, part mythic fairy-tale, THE LORELEIS GRASP is what happens when CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON meets Herschell Gordon Lewis in Jess Francos backyard. Innocent girls at a boarding school are being viciously slaughtered by the Lorelei, a sea-beast with green scales and a dinosaur face. The headmistress of the school hires a greasy, polyester-clad macho man named Sirgurd to stalk the towns gothic caves and kill the monster. This leads to bikinis, motorcycles, and plenty of non-mystery involving the beasts identity. Plus true love for Sirgurd (and maybe Lorelei)! Directed with very little care by the typically meticulous Amando de Ossorio (TOMBS OF THE BLIND DEAD), this is a dreamy tour through the beautiful gutters of Madrid, complete with horrendous dubbing, gratuitous nudity, and ass-shaking Euro-beats. EYES WITHOUT A FACE (1960, 35mm) Once seen, never forgotten. Pauline Kael called EYES WITHOUT A FACE the most elegant horror movie ever made and she aint foolin. This lyrical masterpiece is an incredible amalgam of mad science and fairytale that envelopes you like an ethereal fog. A creepy doctor is responsible for horribly disguring the face of his daughter (played by ethereal Edith Scob), leaving her in a featureless white mask. Best solution: kidnap young women, remove their faces and graft them onto his beloved child. Director Georges Franju is one of the fathers of the French Cinematheque and true giant of French lm history. The poetic artistry that he brings to his pulp fantistique is art of the highest calibre. SUCCUBUS (1968, 35mm) For over 50 years, Spanish jazz enthusiast, pornographer, and cinematic poet extraordinaire Jess Franco lived in his own gonzo movie world populated by mad doctors, haunting women, criminals, spies, sordid nightclub acts, horric mutilitations, and long, slow zooms. Prolic beyond belief, his whole career is an ongoing improvisation on a few basic melodies that hes able to twist and stretch into extreme abstract realms like a great free-jazz solo. His lms denitely arent for everyone, but if you can ride his wild wavelength of sex, violence and subversive black humor, his vast lmography oers seemingly innite untold treasures. It can be a challenge to approach, but SUCCUBUS stands out as an exciting, accessible entry point. It plunges us into the half-dream/half-real life of a vivacious sexpot (Janine Reynaud) whose nightclub act depicts sexualized torture on stage. As we follow her through Lisbon and Berlin, through encounters with lesbians, sadists and little people, we begin to see signs that she is carrying her work home with her. Even Fritz Lang liked this movie - he called it a beautiful piece of cinema.

THE RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD (1985, 35mm) Two types of people exist solely to terrorize and/or exterminate all of mankind: zombies and punks! In RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD, these colossal forces of Shit-Disturbing unite for the most savagely entertaining horror/action/comedy of the new wave era! When punk teen Fred accidentally unleashes a toxic corpse-cloud, the world falls victim to a scourge of shambling, talking, unmurderable cadavers. Featuring the most memorable teen performances youll ever see in a horror movie, the smartest zombies to ever nosh a brainpan, and a truly unforgettable punk n metal soundtrack! THE GRUESOME TWOSOME (1967, 35mm) H.G. Lewis was the rst lmmaker on earth to show audiences what happens when a tongue is ripped out of a face. So hes basically a great humanitarian. THE GRUESOME TWOSOME is a lesser-known entry in his legacy of sludge, but that doesnt mean its anything less than insane(ly awesome). The story of an old lady named Mrs. Pringle, her son Rodney, and a questionable wig shop, GRUESOME TWOSOME shovels on the disembowlings. It also shovels on the heavy padding. But where most no-budget lmmakers pad their movies to feature-length with scenes of people talking on the telephone, Lewis takes it twenty steps further. He lls this absurdist gore-comedy with talking mannequin heads and people eating Kentucky Fried Chicken while go-go dancing on a bed. Genius. SUPERSTITION (1982, 35mm) If theres an all-out winner in the race for lost 1980s bloodletting masterpieces, then this movie is three inches behind and hungry. SUPERSTITION stands naked atop a aming orphanage and howls swear words at Gods ass! No one is spared as heads explode in microwaves, railroad spikes are hammered into human brows, and innocent children are brutally slain by otherworldly forces. Also this movie features our all-time favorite on-screen kill, involving a malfunctioning power tool and a priest! Where most ghosts opt for subtle methods of human eradication, the hate-fueled witchbeast of SUPERSTITION takes chaos OVER THE MAX. SHRIEK OF THE MUTILATED (1974, 35mm) With this movie, Bigfoot reaches his full potential as a hellbent master of death -- probably because hes wearing Addidas sneakers. Dr. Prell is obsessed with tracking down Bigfoot, who is reportedly on-the-loose. Prell has a history of getting people killed on his missions, but that doesnt deter a group of students from traveling with him to the woods during the dead of winter. Fear! Death! Severed limbs in backyards! SHRIEK is a dirt-cheap, surreal gore movie directed, photographed, and edited by scum wizards Michael and Roberta Findlay (SNUFF) and written and produced by Ed Adlum and Ed Kelleher (INVASION OF THE BLOOD FARMERS). In other words, this thing is the REEL DEEL.

POLK COUNTY POT PLANE (1977, 35mm) I was ying Governor Busby over that mountain in my helicopter where the plane was sitting. It was surrounded by ATF and FBI etc... We landed and were met at gunpoint until they all knew who we were. I told the governor I was going to buy that plane. I bought the mountain, the plane, and the rights to the story that was told to me by one of the felons and the pilot. Director Jim West. Though it was made almost entirely by non-professionals, Polk County Pot Plane is a non-stop series of car chases, car crashes, and stunts that are thrillingly REAL. The main characters names are Oosh and Doosh. THE FRUIT IS SWELLING (1997, 35mm) After shocking audiences at the 2013 Butt-Numb-A-Thon this Hong Kong sex comedy is getting an encore presentation. Join special co-host Tim League as we watch what happens when a group of 8-year old girls uses a magic tree to grant their wish to be 10 years older. (Hint: it involves a lot of inappropriate, uncomfortable sexual situations). DEATH LAID AN EGG (1968, 35mm) There are many stylish, arty European movies of the late 60s about handsome men struggling to manage relationships with multiple women. In this one the handsome man (Jean-Louis Trintignant) inherits a high-tech, experimental chicken farm from his wifes family. He may also be murdering prostitutes in his spare time. Often lumped in with the giallo subgenre because of its convoluted plot, stylized photography, and fashionable settings, the reality is, for better or worse, theres no other movie quite like this. BROTHERHOOD OF DEATH (1976, 35mm) Returning home to their small town after ghting in the Vietnam War, a group of African-American friends is dismayed to nd how much control the white population has over their lives and safety. When they attempt a peaceful resolution, things only get more heated. Its Vietnam vets vs. the Ku Klux Klan in this low budget pressure cooker that was shot on location in rural Maryland. The script and the performances are burning with an urgency and sincerity that could have only come out of the tensions of this time period.

CASABLANCA Valentines Feast (1942, 35mm) Of all the gin joints, in all the towns, in all the world, she walks into mine. Spend Valentines watching a PERFECT movie and enjoying an incredible four-course Moroccan-themed feast. Free Kids Club: THE CIRCUS (1928, 35mm) Charlie Chaplins immortal Tramp runs afoul of the law and hides out within the connes of a travelling three-ring operation. A pinnacle of silent screen comedy with a riotous string of perfectly executed comic set-pieces. Barrels of las for all ages! And as always, its a totally free screening with free toys supplied by Toy Joy! Bangarang: CRY-BABY (1990, 35mm) Spoong Elvis movies and juvenile delinquency scare lms of the 50s, this movie follows the adventures of Cry-Baby who, though he is sent to juvie, is determined to cross class (and taste) boundaries to get his square good-girl girlfriend back. Starring Johnny Depp in one of his best roles, CRY-BABY is director John Waters at his absolute most fun. Experimental Response Cinema: A DARKNESS SWALLOWED (2005, 16mm) ERC is a collective of avant-garde lm and video artists, devoted to bringing local, national, and international experimental cinema to Austin screens. We are proud to present with them one of lmmaker BETZY BROMBERGS most acclaimed works. Holly Willis writes All of Brombergs lms are from that same extremely personal place. They stand out because they are about merging experience with the very act of lmmaking, and about staging the process of knowing who you are in the very work that you create. DR. STRANGELOVE 50th Anniversary (1964, 35mm) There may be no funnier or darker comedy. Its absurd and serious, funny and terrifying, light and extremely dark. Its wellstrange. Gentlemen, you cant ght in here! This is the War Room. Join us in celebrating the 50th anniversary of this hilarious masterpiece. Zzang!!!: ERNEST GOES TO CAMP with John R. Cherry III (1987, 35mm) Were it not for the crazed mind of a certain John R. Cherry III, the world would never know the joy of Ernest. Sadly Jim Varney is no longer with us, but the man who helped create the character lives on! So we invited him out for a very special screening where hell share classic Ernest stories and tell us just how a mascot for a failing amusement park became an advertising sensation that led to an incredible career in movies. Knowhutimean?! ETERNAL SUNSHINE OF THE SPOTLESS MIND (2004, 35mm) Charlie Kaufmans inventive script and Michel Gondrys deep bag of tricks perfectly complement each other in this tale of love and loss. Jim Carrey, who has never been better, and Kate Winslet, continuously perfect as always, are the heartsick couple trying to forget each other in this visual feast. This lm will sneak its way into your heart and shatter you from the inside out.

Video Vortex: FEELIN SCREWY (1990, VHS) Comedies exist to make people laugh. FEELIN SCREWY exists to make people question the reliability of their brains. Presented as an urban comedy that oers Fun! Romance! Rap! REALITY!, this movie dees all laws of logic and communication to fabricate a brick wall of surreal hilarity. Somewhere in Los Angeles, three high school seniors get laid, ght the war on drugs, and learn to rap. Technically. But technicalities have no place in FEELIN SCREWY, which is a mishmash of anti-structure that becomes increasingly more ridiculous and insane as the movie progresses. FELLINIS CASANOVA (1976, 35mm) Unlike other treatments of historically famous lover Giacomo Casanova, Fellinis take is an epic odyssey that is equal parts sex comedy and surreal tragedy. Donald Sutherland plays the character as a hopelessly longing, somewhat pretentious dope who is trapped by his reputation as a great lover but unable to nd emotional fulllment or spiritual satisfaction despite his many physical conquests. Filmed with Fellinis typical eye for grotesque and graphically striking imagery, CASANOVA is an under appreciated, rarely screened gem that needs to be seen on the big screen. THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE with rare whiskeys (1962, 35mm) When the legend becomes fact, print the legend. John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Vera Miles and Lee Marvin star in John Fords beautiful elegy to the American West. One of the saddest, most beautiful westerns ever made, LIBERTY VALANCE will be accompanied by a ight of rare American whiskeys as would bet the Duke himself. Music Monday: PUNK IN AFRICA (2012) Three chords, three countries, one revolution. This is the story of the multi-racial punk movement within the recent political and social upheavals experienced in three Southern African countries: South Africa, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe. In these societies, the punk subculture represented a genuinely radical political impulse, playing out against a backdrop of intense political struggle, economic hardship, and even civil war. Cinema Cocktails: SABRINA (1954, 35mm) Charmingly funny and heart-warmingly romantic, Billy Wilders Sabrina takes the traditional Cinderella story line and ips it on its head in this satirical look at class and romance. Humphrey Bogart, William Holden, and Audrey Hepburn all shine in this charming comedic gem. And of course, theres plenty of drinking. So we asked Alamo Beverage Director, Bill Norris, to whip up some fancy cocktails so we can enjoy it in style. SIDEWALK STORIES (1989) A young artist living in New York, on the fringes of the nancial district and its rushing crowds, tries to make a living sketching passers-by on the street. He survives on his meager means and has found refuge in an abandoned building. One night, on the corner of a back alley, he nds a little girl whose father has just been murdered. While struggling to take care of her, he meets a young rich woman who immediately falls in love with this awkward couple. This silent homage to Chaplins THE KID won the Prix du Public at Cannes but has been unjustly forgotten, never appearing on home video in any format. Join us in rediscovering this masterpiece in a brand new restoration!

Tough Guy Cinema: STREETS OF FIRE (1984, 35mm) The merits of STREETS OF FIRE are many. Its stunning production design, its no-fat dialogue, its crew of rotating editors who set the standard for modern editing techniques (for better or for worse), and of course, the music -- courtesy of songwriters Jim Steinmann and Stevie Nicks, and amazingly bolstered by The Blasters as the house band at Torchies Bar. Dont miss this rare big-screen celebration of everything that is good and right about movies. Tonight is what it means to be young! Homo Arigato: TURNING (2012) Based on a critically acclaimed tour of Europe by Antony & The Johnsons and Charles Atlas, TURNING is a music documentary that explores the heart of that performance. Through its synthesis of Antonys songs and unfurling video portraiture of the 13 remarkable women who performed on stage, TURNING creates an intimate and cinematic experience exploring themes of identity, transcendence, and the revelation of essence. Video Vortex: ZOMBIE 90 (1991, VHS) This is another ultra-cheap exercise in exxxtremely tasteless SOV gore from Germanys master-of-crotch-violence, Andreas Schnaas (VIOLENT SHIT, ANTHROPOPHAGUS 2000). Zombies have chainsaws, zombies attack people in restrooms, and one zombie pulls apart a baby aka a doll from the Dollar Tree clearance rack. Thats all terric stu, but what really transforms this generic, no-budget movie into a non-stop pleasuredome is the dubbing. Its not clear who dubbed the movie. Or why. It is clear that this person had no script, usually paid no attention to what was happening onscreen, and maybe fell asleep a few times. So what we get is an assemblage of footage that feels like Cheech And Chong on a quaalude binge during a sleepover party at Lucio Fulcis house! AlamoScope: WEST SIDE STORY (1961, 70mm) This world-class musical is inarguably among the great classics of cinema. Get ready to experience the maximum benets of your senses when this massive cinematic titan is presented in its fullest 70mm glory on our big big screen! The Sharks and The Jets will thrill and ll your eyes and your ears, as this blue collar Romeo & Juliet tale lls your heart to bursting. Its an experience that has rattled and rewarded audiences for generations, and now were bringing it back in the biggest and best way possible. Girlie Night: YOUVE GOT MAIL (1998) Theres something about YOUVE GOT MAIL that never fails to make you feel absolutely wonderful. Maybe its the charming chemistry between Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks. Perhaps its the quirky supporting actors like Steve Nut Shop Zahn, Greg Lone Reed Kinnear, and Jean He Ran Spain Stapleton. Then theres the adorable email banter with dated AOL references and dial-up modem connections. But if there is one element most responsible for this lms greatness, it would obviously be Nora Ephron. As the screenwriter and director, she infused every scene with sparkling humor and a deep comprehension of the human heart. In other words, this movie is 152 insights into your soul.
