Among the many flaws in our modern day education system is the presentation of history to our children in school.

The current approach schools are presenting history is from a Westerncentric, male-oriented and bourgeois point of view. This is very detrimental to our society since the youth are learning things from a very disoriented and disconnected perspective. Children are growing up thinking that the only successful and important people in history are rich, white men. What makes this even worse is that those children are seeing the rich, white men as the saviors of oppressed people. For instance, they are seeing Abraham Lincoln as the man who ended slavery, ignoring the contributions of people like Harriet Tubman and Fredrick Douglas to name a few. They are seeing Woodrow Wilson as the champion of the womens suffrage movement, opposed to people like Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Stanton. This presentation of history perpetuates the racist and sexist ideology that only the rich, white man can end the injustices that occur in our society. This has even a worst effect on the oppressed people, as they feel that their voice against these injustices fall upon deaf ears. We must show that our voices are strong and loud and fight for a more holistic presentation of history!
