PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a Roof Truss for an Industrial Building proposed to be built in Bangalore


city. Particulars of the Building are Length = 120m, Width = 2mm, Roof Truss ?
Fink, Eaves height = 8m assume G.L Truss span = 24m, rise = 5m. Truss spacing
= 5m, Purlin spacing = 1.3m, Roof sheeting = Acc sheets.
Draw to scale:
(a) Elevation
(b) Details of Ridge Joint.
2. Design the stiffener at 3m from the end of a plate girder of 18m span. It carries a
dead load of 30 kN per meter run and a moving load of 60kN per meter run longer
than the span. The web is 180cm 1.2cm in section. Neglect impact.

PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)

3. A tie member consisting of two channels ISMC 200@22.1 kg/m back to back is
to be connected to gusset plate 12mm thick. Design the welded joint to develop
strength of tie, given that the overlap is limited to 350mm. Take permissible stress
in the weld equal to 0.44fy and permissible tensile stress in section equal to 0.6fy .
Where fy = 250 N/mm2 .
4. Explain various shapes of sections which can be used as beam members. Explain
their uses. What are various names given to the structural members classified as
beams?
5. What is tension member? Explain various modes of failure of a compression mem-
ber.
6. What is compression member? Classify compression member based on slenderness
ratio of the column.
7. Design a gusseted base for a column consisting of IS 400× 82.2 kg/m with flange
300mm×14mm one on each flange. The column carries a load of 1900KN. The
column is supported on concrete pedestal with a bearing capacity of 4 N/mm2 .

PART-A(Marks:32)

1. Design a suitable truss for wind loads. Data: Spacing of trusses = 4m, Span =
18m. Assume the necessary data.

2. Explain :

(a) Shear buckling of web plate


(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.

PART-B (Marks:16x3=48)

3. Explain various types of fillet welds. Describe procedure for designing a fillet weld
with relevant IS code provisions.

4. A hall of clear dimensions 15m × 6m is to be covered by RCC slab flooring 120mm


thick over a RS joist spaced at an interval of 3m, center to center. Terrazzo finishing
20mm thick is provided over RCC slab. The live load on slab is 4kN/m2 . The joists
are resting over 300mm thick walls. Design the floor joists, if the permissible stresses
in bending and shear are 165MPa and 100 MPa respectively. Unit weight of RCC
finishing is 24 kN/m3 .

5. What is tension member? Explain various modes of failure of a compression mem-


ber.

6. What is a gusseted base? Explain various features of a gusset base with neat
sketches. Describe procedure for designing a gusseted base. What are advantages
compared with a slab base.

7. A steel stanchion consisting of ISHB 350 at 67.4kg/m carries an axial load of 400KN
and a moment of 100KN-m in the plane of the web. Design the base of the column
with attached base plate and initial tension bolts. The allowable bearing pressure
on footing is 4N/mm2 . The bolts may be given initial tension of 140 N/mm2

PART-A(Marks:32)

1. An Industrial Building of size 10m × 50m is to be covered by roof Trusses. Propose


a suitable type Tubular Roof Truss for the purpose and design various members of
the Truss. Assume necessary data. Draw elevation of the Truss with details to a
suitable scale.

2. Explain :

(a) Shear buckling of web plate


(b) Compression buckling of web plate
(c) Failure of web by yielding and permissible shear stresses.

a superimposed load of 100kN/m Design the section as a plated beam assuming
that only 12mm mild steel plates are available. The top flange of the plated beam
may be assumed to be laterally restrained at 3m c/c. also calculate the theoretical
and actual points of cut off for the plates used.

5. Gabbled corrugated asbestos roofing is supported on steel trusses of 12m span. rise
3m, spaced 4m center to center. The load is 120 kg/m2 of roof area and wind load
is 150kg/m2 normal to roof. Taking 4 purlins one at each end of the slope and
other equally spaced, design an unequal angle purlin with long leg perpendicular
to slope of roof.

6. What is compression member? Explain various modes of failure of a compression


member.

7. A steel stanchion consisting of ISHB 250 at 54.7kg/m carries an axial load of 550kN
and a moment of 25KN-m .It is to be supported on a concrete pedestal of bearing
capacity of 4.1N/mm2 . Design the concrete base if the bearing capacity of soil is
300N/mm2 .
