High school seniors Mad-dison Holder of Alvarado and Mason Irvin of Godley were named queen and ambassa-dor of the Johnson County Junior Livestock Show and Youth Fair on Jan. 5.The Marti Foundation awarded each with a $10,000 college scholarship. The queen and ambassa-dor are responsible for wel-coming visitors, announcing winners, handing out awards and many other tasks throughout the livestock show. The pair was chosen based on a number of factors, in-cluding their applications, in-terviews with a panel of  judges and presentation of their essays on their most memorable moment at the livestock show.Holder, 17, spoke about her extensive involvement with Alvarado FFA and the livestock show throughout the years. She also talked about her success showing her champion animals. How-ever, her most memorable moment wasn’t when she won, but when she helped a friend with a disability show for the first time. She es-corted him into the ring as he showed his animals.“At that moment there truly wasn’t a greater feeling than watching that smile spread across his face and see his eyes light up because he was finally getting to do what he loved,” Holder said. “I can’t think of anything better than watching the youth of our county become success-ful.”Irvin, a member of Godley FFA, told the panel success is labeled by one’s own per-sonal level and for him suc-cess can only be reached by service to another individual. His most memorable moment was when his younger brother showed for the first time. Al-though Irvin didn’t make sale that year, his brother did with his help.“In that moment and re-flecting on that moment I think that’s where I learned where success was,” he said. “That moment taught me that to be successful in the John-son County livestock show was about helping other peo-ple.”Both Holder and Irvin ex-pressed to the judges that their primary duty if elected queen and ambassador was to help other youth achieve suc-cess at the show.Holder and Irvin both plan to attend Texas A&M Univer-sity and major in animal sci-ence.Runners-up Karen Zijlstra with Godley FFA and Brayden Hawkins with Cle-burne FFA were each awarded a $1,500 scholarship from the Johnson County Livestock and Agriculture Association, Queen and Ambassador Contest Superintendent Nan-niece Goodwin gathered as many donors around Johnson County to help with the prep-arations of the contest. She said it’s important for the community to get together and support these students in their success. Next year the hope is that there will be more applicants, Goodwin said.“We want it to be bigger and better. For these kids it’s truly an honor to be queen and ambassador,” she said. “And it’s an honor for [George Marti] to do this for the youth of our county.”
