Sime Darby Work Culture - Respect and Responsibility
CHAPTER 11.0DEFINITION OF RESPECT AND RESPONSIBILITY
Respect is very importance in our life. For example, children are taught to respect their parents, teachers, and elders, school rules and traffic laws, family and cultural traditions, other people'sfeelings and rights, their country's flag and leaders, the truth and people's differing opinions.According to Wikipedia, respect is esteem or a sense of the worth or excellence of, a person, a personal quality, ability, or a manifestation of a personal quality or ability. Esteem for, or a sense of the worth, or excellence, of a person, a personal quality or ability, or something considered as amanifestation of a personal quality or ability. When come to value respect for such things, when someone older, they may shake their heads at people who seem not to have learned to respect them. They develop great respect for people theyconsider exemplary and lose respect for those they discover to be clay-footed, and so they may try torespect only those who are truly worthy of their respect. They may also come to believe that, atsome level, all people are worthy of respect. They may learn that jobs and relationships becomeunbearable if they receive no respect in them.We may also learn that how our lives go depends every bit as much on whether we respectourselves. The value of self-respect may be something we can take for granted, or we may discover how very important it is when our self-respect is threatened, or we lose it and have to work to regainit, or we have to struggle to develop or maintain it in a hostile environment. Some people find thatfinally being able to respect themselves is what matters most about getting off welfare, kicking adisgusting habit, or defending something they value; others, sadly, discover that life is no longer worth living if self-respect is irretrievably lost. It is part of everyday wisdom that respect and self-respect are deeply connected, that it is difficult if not impossible both to respect others if we don'trespect ourselves and to respect ourselves if others don't respect us.

Meanwhile, by referring the Wikipedia, responsibility assumption is adoctrinein the personalgrowth field holding that each individual has substantial or totalresponsibilityfor the events andcircumstances that befall them in their life. The term responsibility assumption thus has aspecialized meaning beyond the general concept of taking responsibility for something, and is not to be confused with the general notion of making an assumption that a concept such as "responsibility"exists.Being responsible begins with respect. We must respect our self enough to conduct our life in amanner that will always ensure that our self-respect remains intact. Self-respect is the glue that holdsthe individual together. If we have no respect, we will not even understand self-responsibility, muchless practice it.If we refuse to accept responsibility for our self, there is little hope that we will ever acceptresponsibility for anything else. It is a vicious downward spiral from there. Everything and everyonewe come in contact with will be affected by our failure to accept self responsibility.Self-responsibility is what sustains the individual and holds the group together. Self-responsibilitydemands that every decision we make and every action we take is in our own best interest, not witha view towards selfish desires but from the standpoint of self-respect. What is good for our self-respect is often uncomfortable, but it is always the right thing to do.Respect for others is what sustains the group and holds a community together. If we have respect for others it means we will always try to do what is right concerning our interaction with them even if that means ending their miserable existence. We won't cheat them, we won't lie to them, and wewon't attempt to force them to our will. If they refuse to act rightly, we deal with them in a fair and just manner. Knowing this, others will respect us and want to interact with us in the same manner. They will feel comfortable and confident in all their dealings with us.
