Lesson:
Hold up the picture of King Benjamin. Ask your family if they know who is in the picture and what thepicture is about. Let them answer telling the story in their own words. Make sure in your discussion to bring outthese points:* King Benjamin was a righteous leader.* He served his people and wanted them to keep the commandments.* When he became old, he gathered his people at the temple to speak to them.* The people brought their families and pitched their tents.* Because there was such a multitude, King Benjamin had a tower built to speak from so that morepeople could hear his counsel.* He had his words written down and sent among the people who couldn’t hear him. He wantedeveryone to understand what they should do to be happy.* King Benjamin loved his people. He set a good example for them, and they believed his words.
Activity
: Tape King Benjamin to the top of the tower. Read the statements King Benjamin taught to the people asyou glue each one to the tower.King Benjamin taught the people the things the Savior wanted them to do. He testified to them that the Savior,Jesus Christ, would come to them. The people listened to their prophet. When he finished speaking to them, theywanted to take upon them the name of Jesus Christ and to keep His commandments. They made a covenant toalways remember Jesus, and they taught their children the words of King Benjamin. The people became veryrighteous as they did what the Lord, through their prophet, asked them to do.What do we do twice a year that is similar to what the people of King Benjamin did? We gather together to listen toour Prophet, apostles, and other leaders speak to us. Their words of counsel are written down and sent to all theworld for everyone to read in the Ensign or listen to on the internet. This coming Saturday and Sunday we will getto listen to and watch General Conference. We will get to hear Pres. Thomas S. Monson testify to us about theSavior, Jesus Christ. It is important to listen to his words just as we would listen to Jesus Christ if He were here tospeak to us.Show your family the tower with Pres. Monson’s picture. Tell them that during General Conference they will need topay attention to his teachings so as a family you can fill in the blank spaces on the tower with statements of whatPres. Monson taught. Hang the tower up in the room where you will watch conference or some other special placeto remind you to listen carefully during conference.
