The simpleSAMLphp is an iteration of what was earlier referred to as lightbulb (Sun OpenSSO Extensions), written by Pat Patterson, Sun. There are not much code left from lightbulb, but credits go to Pat for introducing a new way of thinking when it comes to implementing federation protocols in a simple and elegant way. The simpleSAMLphp project is currently led by Andreas Åkre Solberg, UNINETT. The product is used to bridge AAI protocols in the GÉANT project, http://geant2.net.

The OpenSSO offers a host of scalable and flexible access management and SSO capabilities, including log management, policy management, Security Assertion Markup Language (SAML) service provider, multifactor authentication, all ready for integration into applications. In particular, integration with OpenSSO's identity services works well in the broader application runtime environment—independent of Policy Agents, the reverse proxy, and non-Java applications that are developed with scripting languages like Rails, Perl, and PHP. Do consider OpenSSO as a viable and robust solution for securing your applications.
