Fifteen Minutes of Kiteboarding in winds hitting 40 MPH – 2007 03 27
On Sunday I mentioned to my friends that Tuesday would be good, knowing that a storm was rollingthrough that was supposed to clear on Tuesday. At breakfast, the wind was 27 gusting 30 and stayed strongthroughout the day. Young and I made our way to the mud flat at 3
rd
Avenue at 5:30 – the winds on the flatwere wild and intense. Shifting back and forth, with a huge range of +/- 30 Mph.

I launched Young on a Naish Shockwave 7 meter kite and walked 30 meters off the beach to make sure hedid not get blown away. Upon returning, Glenn showed up and rigged a Nitro 10 C-kite. Once launched, itwas literally jumping up and down and side to side – too overpowered and jittery to fly. We landed his kite, and launched my BEST Waroo 9 bow kite. Wow…. Ethan (who weighs 190) held me ( I weigh 160) down, and after launch, at the top of the wind window, the kite compressed, froze in mid air in the shape of theletter “M” and hung there for a second. Then it popped vertically, and all 350 lbs of us were liftedvertically a foot or two , then about 10 feet forward. I let go, the kite came down, Glen dove on top of it,and I unhooked as fast as I could...Young came back in at 5:45 PM and I took his kite as he walked in, with Glen holding him down. My GPSreceiver indicates I was on the water from 5:45 to 6:00 PM.

The tides were largely irrelevant today as the wind was so strong. Even with a flood tide, moving upwindat a controlled speed was doable so long as I could stay down on the water and not just get carried away bythe wind…
