Guided since our founding in 1912 by the missionary vision of the Paulists, committed to the mission of Jesus, and dedicated to be welcoming to all, we, the community of St. Philip Neri, strive to reach out, to reconcile and to promote unity for all Gods creation through worship, education, and service toward the common good.

IN MEMORY OF JAKE:
Many of us are familiar with 'Jake' who was been our 'homeless' friend for more than twelve-plus years. Easily recognized by his tall 6' frame, long gray hair and beard, and, of course, the leather hat. He attended many of our parish events, helped Ed set up tables, and even helped mow the lawn and emptied the garbage when Ed was on vacation. Last winter, after a severe illness, the VA/SS helped Jake get into his own small apartment downtown---and he loved it. Our friend Jake died quietly in his sleep on Christmas. Sunday, Feb.23 the 9:30 Liturgy will be offered in his memory.

BINGO---it was fun! About 38 people came. Thank

you for bringing your friends. And thank you Rose Wolfe, Noah and Emily for all the setup/take down. And thank you to Bill Leathers for being our Caller. Well do it again in a couple of months.

HONORING ALTAR SOCIETY MEMBERS

Today at 10:40am (right after Mass) Peace and Justice on behalf of the Parishioners want to honor The Altar Society with a Tea social on February 2, 2014 after mass. We will offer tea, and we will make baked goods. There will be no donuts. Please join us to thank Our Altar Society for all of their contributions to our parish.

WE NEED A VACCUUM!
The Church is still in need of a new vacuum! If anyone has an extra one that works well and is not being used, we would really appreciate your help. Please drop it by the parish office so we can keep our church clean. Thank you!

RELIGIOUS ARTICLES COMMUNION TO THE HOMEBOUND

Taking Communion to our parishioners who are homebound is an important ministry of our parish. It is one of the Corporal Works of Mercy mentioned by Christ. It is our way of reaching out to them as members of our faith community and at the same time giving them the opportunity to receive the Eucharist at least once or twice a month. If you are interested in this ministry please call the parish office. If you are homebound or know someone who is homebound (either in their own home or in an assisted living facility) please call the office to request Communion.

Religious articles are available in the Parish Foyer. We have rosaries, medals, bibles, index tabs for bibles, plaques, holy cards, crucifixes in various sizes, ect. All Items are priced at our cost so we can share them with the community.

PASTORAL CORNER
THINGS ARE NOT ALWAYS WHAT THEY SEEM
Things are not always what they seem to be. One of my all time favorite books is The Hitchhiker 's Guide to The Galaxy. In the beginning of the book it states the following. "It is an important and popular fact that things are not always what they seem. For instance, on planet Earth, humans had always assumed that they were more intelligent than dolphins because humans had achieved so much: the wheel, New York City, wars and so on -- while all the dolphins had ever done was muck around in the water having a good time. On the other hand, dolphins had always believed that they were far more intelligent than humans. "Curiously enough, the dolphins had long known of the impending destruction of planet Earth and had made many attempts to alert humans to the danger; but most of their communications were misinterpreted as amusing attempts to punch footballs through hoops, or whistle for tidbits, so they eventually gave up and left Earth by their own means. "The last ever dolphin message was misinterpreted as a surprisingly sophisticated attempt to do a double-back ward somersault through a hoop while whistling the 'star-spangled Banner,' but in fact the message was this: 'so long and thanks for the fish. Having a spirituality means that we can go beyond the mere surface appearance of things. There are messages at a deeper level that can make our lives more whole and complete. It is very difficult to judge life at the surface. There is another quote that someone just gave me saying: "Don't attribute to malice what cant be explained by stupidity." We run into this all the time when, for example, someone cuts us off in traffic. It probably isn't malice, and it may not even be stupidity - it might have just been a mistake or bad judgment on their part. There could be a totally logical reason why people act the way they do and we are totally unaware of what is motivating them they may not even know themselves . As I listen to and observe people there is a lot of anger and resentment going around. We all have our pet peeves. Many of us are plagued by these feelings at various times in our lives. Having someone tell us not to be angry or resentful doesnt help much. If however, we go a bit deeper we can find the source of such feelings. Often the source of our negative feelings is fear. When we examine our fears behind our anger and resentment then we are on the road of ridding ourselves of such emotions or at least brining them under more control. We need to ask ourselves what we are afraid of? Are we afraid that people wont like us? Afraid of what others might do to us or think of us if they knew the truth about us? Is our security threatened? Developing a spirituality means that we are rooting ourselves at a much deeper level where we arent tossed around by all the whims of chance at the surface of things. Rooting ourselves through daily meditation, quiet time, fear-less time with God who loves us unconditionally helps us ask the deeper questions that will lead to our wholeness and well being both with ourselves and with others.
