Overall co-ordination of drug strategy in the UK is the responsibility ofthe Home Office Drug Strategy Directorate, which commissioned thisguidance through its Drug Prevention Advisory Service, in partnershipwith the London Drug Policy Forum.The Drugs Prevention Advisory ServiceThe Drugs Prevention Advisory Service (DPAS) was launched on 1 April1999 by the Home Secretary as the replacement body for the DrugsPrevention Initiative. It forms the operational and regional arm of theHome Office Drugs Strategy Directorate. The DPAS remit is topromote effective community-based drugs prevention at local, regionaland national level in line with the aims and objectives of theGovernment’s national drugs strategy.DPAS provides information, advice and support to local Drug ActionTeams to encourage good drugs prevention practice based on availableand emerging evidence, as well as to local communities andpractitioners. It aims to help foster links with other Governmentinitiatives such as crime and disorder partnerships, Health ActionZones and other initiatives all aimed at tackling social exclusion. DPASalso provides funding and expertise to assist in the development andevaluation of demonstration programmes to help further knowledgeabout effective practice in drugs prevention. It publishes a series ofdetailed research reports about drugs prevention to inform evidence-basedpolicy and practice.The London Drug Policy Forum was established in 1991 to co-ordinateLondon local authority policy and practice and to encourage joint working. It is funded by the Corporation of London.

The Corporation of London is the local authority for the City ofLondon. In addition to the usual services provided by a local authority,such as housing, social services, education and town planning, theCorporation is involved in a wide range of activities extending beyondthe boundaries of the Square Mile for the benefit of the nation.
