egular exercise can benefitthe body in many ways,helping men and womenmaintain healthier weights andlower their risks for devel-oping potentially deadlydiseases. Though manypeople are quick to associ-ate exercise with its phys-ical benefits, those hoursspent on the treadmillalso can boost brainpower.According to Dr. BarryGordon, professor of neu-rology and cognitive sci-ence at Johns HopkinsMedical Institutions andcoauthor of “IntelligentMemory: Improve theMemory That Makes YouSmarter,” exercise has adirect impact on thebrain. That’s becauseexercise works directly on brain tis-sue, improving the connectionsbetween nerve cells, creating newsynapses, growing new neuronsand blood vessels, and improvingcell energy efficiency. So whilemany people may begin an exerciseregimen with a goal of trimmingtheir waistlines or toning theirbodies, they might be happy toknow that those physical benefitsare accompanied by several cogni-tive benefits as well.As the American Psych-olog-ical Association acknowledges, theconnection between exercise andmental health is hard to ignore,and the APA notes that the fol-lowing are just a few of the mentalbenefits men and women mightreap from regular exercise.
IMPROVED MOOD
Many people feel great afterexercising, especially if that exer-cise comes at the end of a particu-larly stressful day. However, thoseextra laps on the track or thosehours spent on the treadmill don’tjust pay short-term dividends. In acontrolled trial overseen by DukeUniversity researcher and clinicalpsychologist James Blumenthal,sedentary adults with majordepressive disorder were assignedinto one of four groups: supervisedexercise, home-based exercise,antidepressant therapy, or a place-bo pill. Those in the exercise andantidepressant groups had higherrates of remission than those in theplacebo group, and Blumenthalconcluded that exercise was gener-ally comparable to antidepressantsfor men and women with majordepressive disorder. In addition, infollowing up with patients a yearlater, Blumenthal found that thosewho continued to exercise hadlower depression scores than thoseparticipants who were less active.Blumenthal’s study was not
