implementationof
the
21st
centuryinteractiveclassroomtechnologies
focusing
on
the
useofPrometheanBoardsduringthe2007-2008schoolyearhasbeenanundeniablesuccess.These
21st
century
classroomsareintegratinginteractivetechnologytomake
learning
moreauthenticforstudentsbysupporting
direct
instruction
with
hands-oncurricularinteraction.
Duringthe
firstyearofimplementation(2007-2008),these21
st
centuryinteractiveclassroomtechnologieshavebeenused
t
increasestudentengagementandacademicsuccess,toenhancedifferentiatedinstruction,andtoexpandformativeassessmentcapabilities.
By
leveragingthetechnologyfundinginthecapitalbudgetandutilizingtelecommunicationsexpenditurerebatesthatareavailablethroughthefederalEducationRate-e-Rateprogram,
this
classroomimprovementinitiativecanbeexpandedsignificantly.Mr.LarryA.Bowers,chiefoperatingofficer,andMr.SherwinCollette>
chief
technologyofficer,
have
presentedmewithaplantoincreasethenumberofPrometheanBoardstoapproximately65percentofourmiddleandhighschoolclassrooms
next
year.Background
The
21st
centuryinteractiveclassroom
modelis
animportantcomponentofPhaseIoftheMiddleSchool
Reform
initiative.Thismodelprovidesinteractivewhiteboards,projectors,
student
responsesystems,andotheraudiovisualtechnologies
to
enhanceteachingandlearning.Thismultisensorylearningenvironmentengagesstudentsandincreasesopportunitiesforteacherstoprovide
differentiated
instruction
to
addressthe
learning
stylesofauditory,
visual
andkinestheticlearners.Thisfacilitatesequitable
classroom
practices,encourages
student-driven
learningratherthanteacher-directedinstruction,andincreasesstudentdiscourseand

Upon
reflectingonyear
one
ofthe
21st
centuryinteractiveclassroomimplementation,teachershavereportedincreased
motivationof
theirstudentsandalsoforthemselves.Veteranaswell
 
recentlyhiredteachershaveexpressedasenseofrejuvenationoftheirprofessionalpractices,excitementovertheextenttowhichstudentsareengagedandactivelyparticipating,andtheir
 
MembersoftheBoardofEducation2June9,2008abilitytoassessstudentunderstandingquicklyandefficientlyandtousethisfeedbacktoinformtheirinstruction.Additionally,teachershaveindicatedanabilitytoimprovetheirlessonsbyhavingstudentsinteractwithvariousformsofmediaAdministratorshaveobservedhighlevelsofstudentengagementandincreasedteachertimedevotedto]essonplanning.Studentsappreciatethewaythetechnology

classroominput,andempowersthemtomonitortheirownlearning.The
21st
centuryinteractiveclassroomtechnologiessupporttheBoardofEducation'sPolicyIFA,
Curriculum
aswellasPolicyIEB,
MiddleSchoolEducation
Thisinitiativerespondstotheneed
for
curricularsupportsthat
help
teachersintegratetechnologyinto curriculum,instruction,andassessmentto-buildorstrengthenstudents'interestandskillsintheuseoftechnology. ThesetechnologyinitiativesalsoareconsistentwithBoardpolicybyreflectingbestpracticesandtechnologicaladvancementsbysupportingtheinvestigationofinnovativecurriculumideasthatalignwithcurriculumstandardsandpromoteopportunitiesforeverystudenttoparticipate.
Program
ExpansionTechnologyisanessentialtooltothefutureofteachingandlearninginourschoolsystem.Expansionofthe
21st
centuryinteractiveclassroomtechnologiesinitiativeprovidessecondaryschoolsincreased
opportunities
forseamlessverticalarticulationthroughcollaboration,critical
thinking>and
student-directed
learning.
Expandingtheuse
ofPromethean
BoardsinallmiddleschoolsreflectsourcommitmenttoincludesuccessfulachievementstrategiesintheMiddleSchoolReforminitiative.Thisexpansiontoal]middleschoolswillresultingreaterconsistencyofcurriculum
implementation
andacceleratethereforminitiativestoallourschools,teachers,andstudentsmuchmorequickly.Movingthisinitiativeintohighschoolsnowensurescontinuityofstudent-centeredinstruction.Wehavetheopportunitytoexpandthisinitiativeinto2,600secondaryclassroomsforthe2008-2009
school
year.Oneoftheprimaryreasonsweareabletoexpandthisinitiativemuchfasterintotheremainderofourmiddleschoolsandallofourhighschoolsisthatwehavenegotiatedpricesthatareapproximately17percentlowerthanlastyear'spricesandtherewillbenofinancecharges.Thecost
for
thisimplementationisprojectedtobe 3.3
million
peryearforfouryears.Inadditiontotheselowercosts
for
thetechnology,thiseffortcanbeaccomplished
by
reprioritizingtechnologyfundinginthecapitalbudgetandinthetechnologyrebateprogram.
By
leveragingthetechnologyfundingscheduledintheFiscalYear2009CapitalBudgetandbyredirectingexistingtelecommunicationsexpenditurerebates(availablethroughthefederale-Rateprogram),thecostofthisinitiativecanbewithintheexistingresources.However,itwill~·-···--·· ~-fequire.theBoard.ofEducationtorequesttheCouncil.tofund..he.five.out••years..oftheFY2008-.--·~ ·--·~-.·-2009·eapita1
Improvements
Program(CIP)attheleveltheBoardrequestedirrNovember200/.·-·As
you
remember,duringrecentCouncilactionontheCIP,theCouncil
only
approvedthefirstyearoftheBoard'srequesttoincreasethetechnologyprojectfortheexpansionofinteractiveclassroomsintomoresecondaryclassrooms.Thiswillrequireanadditional 4.8millionintheCIPforFY2010-2014aspreviouslyrequestedbytheBoard.
